From March 28 to June 24, 2018, visitors can expect to see 15 variants of this historically important model which the company premiered 50 years ago. The Audi 100 won the "Golden Steering Wheel" award five times, was crowned "Car of the Year" twice and was also voted "World Car of the Year" by a panel of motoring journalists. In all, 3.2 million units were sold which demonstrates the success which this model experienced. The premiere of the Audi 100 in 1968 was preceded by a turbulent history because its development was actually started in secret. In the mid-1960s, Volkswagen AG acquired Auto Union GmbH and prevented the company from developing any new models. This stipulation to only look after the existing models was ignored by Ludwig Kraus, then Technical Director at Auto Union GmbH. In 1965, Kraus wanted to expand the range of vehicles which the resuscitated Audi brand offered. He saw adding a model in the executive segment as the only way to keep an independent Auto Union GmbH afloat in a time when the Ingolstadt plant was being used for production of the VW Beetle.

They not only satisfy the visitors’ desire to receive new information, but also realise the business goals of brand representation, both increasing loyalty to it, and developing corporate culture. The current trend in automotive brand museums’ design is that the artistic solutions for the exhibition environment form associations among visitors that reflect the personality of a particular brand. This article analyses the scenario-design organisation of the museum exhibition of the Audi brand, which, during over 100 years in the automotive market, has formed its unique and inimitable image. Here we reveal the design means of exposition construction, where the exhibits are integrated into the economic and social conditions of their existence, forming an idea of important milestones in the history of the twentieth century.

  • How the Museum Saw the Motorcar?
How the Motor Museum Saw the Automobile: Curating the Automobile as Commodity, as Design and as Social History in Germany and Austria in the 20th Century from National Identity to Mobility. Thesis - submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Leicester by Pál Négyesi School of Museum Studies University of Leicester October 2018 1 Abstract How the motor museum saw the automobile: Curating the automobile as commodity, as design and as social history in Germany and Austria in the 20th century – from national identity to mobility. The automobile has defined the 20th century. It has brought along radical changes in mobility, altered the landscape, transformed communities and everyday life. Although this complex object has been shown in museums for over a century, an in-depth academic study which looks at the different institutions and changing curatorial practices around the automobile has been lacking. This thesis charts the evolution of the motor museum in Germany and Austria. Here the motor museum is being defined as a museum where automobiles are displayed. It includes science, technical, industrial museums, local history museums and company museums. This thesis draws upon the work of Lubar (Lubar&Kingery,1993) and Divall (Divall&Scott,2001) in order to conceptualise the car as a museum object and as an object of material culture. With the help of fifteen case studies it analyses the different type of museums, their development, their curatorial practices and their permanent and temporary exhibitions, in order to understand the different roles the automobile has played (and is playing) in these institutions.

Tradition Communications Peter Kober Press Spokesperson for Tradition Tel: +49 841 89-39628 e-mail: [email protected] www.audi -mediaservices.com How DKW changed the automotive world • 80 years ago: the DKW F1 was the world’s first volume-produced car with front-wheel drive • Its triumphal career began in 1931 • The last DKW models left the assembly lines in Argentina and Brazil in 1968 Ingolstadt, February 16, 2011 – The first Audi advertising with the ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’ slogan appeared 40 years ago, in 1971. Even then this technical leadership claim was well and truly justified. If we look back another 40 years we find DKW, one of the companies that later became Audi, introducing its F1 model at the 1931 International Automobile Exhibition in Berlin – the world’s first high- volume production car with front-wheel drive. Jörgen Skafte Rasmussen acquired a majority shareholding in Audi Werke AG of Zwickau, Germany in August 1928. He planned to stimulate sales by installing his eight-cylinder engines in the large Audi models, but competition from America was strong, and during the world economic crisis from the end of 1929 onwards Audi found itself facing increasingly severe financial problems. A new product with greater market appeal was urgently needed to ensure the company’s survival. In October 1930 Rasmussen decided that an entirely new small car should be developed in the shortest possible time. Its design was to be based on the water- cooled DKW twin-cylinder motorcycle engine, with front-wheel drive and a lightweight steel chassis frame. Rasmussen allowed the designers only six weeks to finish their work.

People are motivated to travel to destinations where cars are produced (car factories), showcased (car fairs) and used (car rallies, races and driving experiences). This article presents the definition of the phenomenon and reviews the current state of car tourism development and research. Car tourism is examined from the interdisciplinary perspectives of tourism, heritage, marketing, and destination management in areas where car tourism creates tourist spaces and products. The phenomenon has a significant impact on tourism at destina- tions where cars are either manufactured or present car history, or have automotive heritage experiences based on classic cars. In addition, car tourism plays an important role in the marketing of major car brands and in place marketing. As a synopsis of current research, the paper lays the foundation for further studies, including investiga- tions on the socio -economic results of car tourism, studies of car tourists' motivations and future research perspectives. Key words: car tourism, automotive heritage tourism, car visitor attractions, tourism, car INTRODUCTION Car tourism is defined as “all the activities undertaken during a tourist trip (business trips included), during which one of the main purposes guaranteeing basic tourism experience is to visit buildings, sites and spaces associated with the production, presentation and use of cars as well as to participate in car events” (Cudny 2018a, p.
