    MARIE–HÉLÈNE GUTBERLET ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ Towards an Aesthetic of the Migrant Self — The Film Le Clandestin by José Zeka Laplaine A BSTRACT: The representation of migrant arrivals in Europe is at the centre of this investigation of Zeka Laplaine’s short film Le Clandestin (1996). Placing the short film in the context of the African cinematographic traditions of earlier, more conventional, migrant narratives, the essay shows that the associative structure and the postmodern use of irony and magical realism in this short film question both our sense of familiarity and the promise of effortless transcultural communication. 1 OST FILMS (cinema and television productions) dealing with African migration, especially migration to Europe, are produced M and realized by European film and broadcasting companies. They reflect a specific attitude towards individuals and their situation and towards the issue of foreign presence on European soil. The portrayal and production of the African migrant in European media represents a complex field of poli- tically, socially, racially, and aesthetically relevant influences that would need to be analysed specifically. Awareness of these issues has spread beyond the academic field: everybody is more or less familiar with the images of African migrants, with the unease, the exaggerations, humiliations, and transformations taking place in the production of these images, and has learned to view against the grain and sometimes see behind the obvious.     Hommage à Med Hondo Comédien, Réalisateur (Mauritanie) Tout comme Sembène Ousmane, père des cinémas africains, Med Hondo a été un ami très proche du Festival d’Amiens. Ses premiers films : Soleil Ô (1969) et Les Bicots-nègres vos voisins (1973) nous avaient marqués dans notre jeunesse de cinéphiles par la révolte exprimée et l’originalité de leur écriture cinématographique. Au fil des ans nous avons suivi son œuvre et il fit souvent partie de nos invités. L’une de ses remarques lors d’un colloque sur la production en Afrique fut à l’origine de l’une des plus superbes aventures du Festival d’Amiens. Je revois encore Med Hondo qui se dresse dans l’assistance en ce mois de novembre 1990 à la Maison de la Culture d’Amiens et donne de la voix : « il importe maintenant de créer une revue qui fasse le lien entre les cinéastes africains et l’ensemble de la profession, producteurs comme techniciens, d’Afrique ou d’Europe. La création d’une bourse d’aide aux scénarios est le deuxième point qu’il convient de mettre en œuvre ». Nous avons relevé le défi et en février 1991, à l’occasion du Fespaco paraissait le numéro 1 de la revue Le Film africain et du Sud. Le fonds d’aide au scénario démarra quelques années plus tard. La revue vécut jusqu’en 2014 et aujourd’hui encore constitue l’une des références pour la connaissance des films de l’Afrique sub-saharienne de la fin du 20e et du début du 21e siècle. Comme nous l’écrivions Annouchka de Andrade et moi-même, au moment de la disparition de Med Hondo, le 2 mars 2019 : « son œuvre aura marqué de manière conséquente la mémoire des cinéphiles intéressés aux cinémas du Sud.

    Producing African Cinema in Paris An Interview with Andree Daventure Mark A. Reid Andree Daventure did extensive editing work in French film and televi- sion before she founded her own company, Atria. In 1953, she became an assistant film editor for a series of documentary shorts, including La Destruction et Reconstruction de Varsovie, a series on the Marshall Plan in 1955, a film on the United Nations, and several other educational films. By 1957, she edited features, including Louis Saslovsky's 1er Mai (1957) with Yves Montand, Raoul Andre's Clara et les Mechants (1958) and his Un Homme a Vendre in 1959. Between 1959 and 1966, she worked as the assistant editor on twenty-one feature films, including C. B. Aubert's study on interracial intimacy, Les Laches Vivent D-Espoir (1960), Yves Allegret's adaptation of Zola's Germinal (1963), and Rene Clement's pseudo-documentary, Paris Brule-t-/l? [Is Paris Burning?} (1966) which she also helped to research. In 1967, she became a chief editor on television and film productions. Several year later, she began editing films made by African filmmakers. Daventure and the French Ministry of Foreign Relations (which helps to finance Francophone African cinema, as the Ministere de las Cooperation had done before 1981) have been the two most important European promoters of Francophone African cinema. It was after discussions with Senegalese filmmaker Safi Faye, the first African woman filmmaker, that I asked Andree Daventure for an interview. The theme of the commemoration in 2014, “Victory over slavery: Haiti and beyond”, paid tribute to the fight against slavery in nations around the world. Haiti was the first nation to become independent as a result of the struggle of enslaved men and women, led by Toussaint Louverture. It is 210 years since the Republic of Haiti was established on 1 January 1804. Working in close collaboration with States members of the Caribbean Community and the African Union, the Department of Public Information organized a series of activities, which started on 24 January and continued throughout the year, including the official observance of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade on 25 March 2014; a film festival on slavery; and an exhibition. The twentieth anniversary of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Slave Route Project provided another opportunity to organize educational and commemorative events related to slavery.
