Olmsted County Fairgrounds Hosts 41st Annual August Gold Rush Antique Show & Market

Article & photos by Brian Maloney August 16th through the 18th were important dates in Rochester, Minnesota, for they marked the weekend of the massive Olmsted County Gold Rush Antique Show & Flea Market. Now in its forty-first season, Gold Rush fills the 52-acre Olmstead County Fairgrounds with antiques and collectibles - always with well over 1,000 dealers. Show promoters Richard & Kay Townsend have been running Gold Rush for the past twenty-plus seasons, but have a much-longer association with the venerable event. They were among the dozen-or-so dealers at the very first Gold Rush Show way back in the early 1970’s! Although the show got started in the nearby town of Oronoco, for many years it has made its home in Rochester. The town is best known, of course, for its world famous Mayo Clinic. Founded in the 1880’s by Dr. William W. Mayo after the great tornado of 1883 destroyed much of the town and wounded thousands, the Mayo Clinic is today among the largest and most well-respected medical facilities in the world. Many famous people from around the world, including former Presidents George H.W. Bush, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan have visited Rochester as patients of the Mayo Clinic. The city of around 100,000 citizens is now centered around the clinic. Be sure to Mad Cat Antiques & Collectibles visit its unique downtown shopping district, with overhead skyways and underground brought some choice pedal tractors, walkways (known as subways) where shoppers can access most businesses in climate including not one, but two early controlled comfort year-round. From humble beginnings back in the 1970’s, the show has now grown into one of the largest indoor/outdoor Period toy high- antiques events anywhere - with well over 1,000 dealers from around the U.S. and lights at D & R Canada setting up for both of the scheduled summer shows. Antiques included Show promoters Richard and Kay Townsend have been in the antiques business for this well-loved much of their lives. “We know what it's like to be an antiques dealer” said Richard, Victorian hobby “Kay and me were dealers at the very first Gold Rush Show forty-one years ago. But horse ($435) now that we’re running the event, we’re here to serve the dealers. We try to make their and novelty stay here as trouble-free as possible. Many stay at the dealer’s campground adjacent mechanical to the show, complete with full hook-ups and other amenities.” cast iron Richard navigates the 52-acre fairgrounds by golf cart, and knows hundreds of the bank appro- dealers by name. They come from as far away as Texas, Arkansas, even Canada. “In priately named some of the buildings, nearly every dealer has had occupied the very same spot since “Novelty Bank” we took over the show more than twenty years ago,” Richard told me. “I’m sure that right on front - $355. 217-690-5547 the good attendance has a lot to do with the loyalty of the dealers. We’ll often draw over 40,000 shoppers over the course of a weekend, and have had more than 30,000 folks come on a single day.” Admission is always free, and parking only $5. And although Saturday and Sunday are the most popular days to visit the Olmsted County Gold Rush Antique Show & Market, everyone is welcome on Friday - set-up day - to shop as the booths take shape. You may find some early bargains then, but Richard said to be sure to come back on Saturday or Sunday as well, to see what the late-arriving dealers have to offer. It may be called an ‘antique show & flea market,’ but the show is unquestionably You’ll find many hobby dealers here you geared towards antiques and collectibles. “It’s probably 90% old stuff here at the won’t anywhere else, like this local vendor show” said Richard. “You can find items ranging from 5-cents to $50,000 - whatever that brought a wonderful selection of beer, soft drink, and petroleum advertising your tastes and pocketbook can handle.” of all sorts. And if you missed the August edition of the Olmsted County Gold Rush Antique Show & Flea Market, there are three more great Townsend Promotions antiques events coming up this fall. Their Cedar Rapids Antique Show is right around the cor- ner, happening at the Hawkeye Downs Expo Center on October 11th through the 13th.
