Honoring and recognizing Mr. Jim Gardner for his hard work and dedication in the City of Philadelphia over the past 41 years. WHEREAS, Jim Gardner, a New York City native, spent most of his adult life in Philadelphia. He has been covering small and large scale events for Action News since 1976; and WHEREAS, Mr. Gardner studied at Columbia University receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. While attending Columbia he had his first experience with broadcast journalism while covering the historic student riots breaking out protesting the Vietnam war; and WHEREAS, After graduating in 1970, Mr. Gardner worked at WINS radio in New York. Two years later he began working at WFAS radio located in White Plains, New York. In 1974, Mr. Gardner began a new career as a television broadcaster at WKBW-TV in Buffalo; and WHEREAS, On June 1st, 1976 Mr. Gardner began working at WPVI-TV in Philadelphia as a reporter and anchor for the 12 p.m Action News. It was in 1977 when Gardner accepted his current anchor position for the 6 p.m and 11 p.m news; and WHEREAS, Mr. Gardner has done coverage for both the Democratic and Republican Presidential Conventions since 1980 and has interviewed every major Presidential candidate and sitting President since the start of his career in Philadelphia in 1976; and WHEREAS, Mr. Gardner was awarded Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia Person of the year in 1996 and was inducted into their hall of fame in 2003 WHEREAS, Temple University grants the Jim Gardner Scholarship to one student studying broadcast journalism every year to aid in paying for his/her education. This award was made in Mr. Gardner’s honor and has been in existence since 1987; and WHEREAS, Mr. Gardner is a well-respected anchorman and reporter by both his colleagues and his viewers, in which he has dedicated the past 41 years of his career too. RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, that we hereby honor and recognize Mr. Jim Gardner for his hard work and dedication in Philadelphia over the past 41 years. KGO ABC 7 also received the Community Service Award for “End Hunger Now.” News Excellence was awarded to KPIX CBS 5, “CBS 5 Eyewitness News.” The recipients of the coveted Evening Newscast Emmy® Awards went to: Large Markets: “ABC 7 News at 6:00,” KGO ABC 7, and “Noticias Univision 14 Solo A las Once,” KDTV Univision 14, San Francisco; Medium Markets: “Action News at Six,” KFSN ABC 30, and “Noticias 21 Evening Newscast,” KFTV Univision 21, Fresno; Smaller Markets: “KSBW Action News 8,” KSBW 8, Salinas. The most honored individuals were Anna Werner, Reporter, KPIX CBS 5, San Francisco and Christian Anguiano, Photographer/Editor, KUVS Univision 21, Sacramento with four statuettes each. Receiving three trophies were: Robert Genolio and Abby Sterling, KPIX CBS 5, Pamela Diaz and Santiago Lucero, KUVS Univision 19, Sacramento. A total of 215 Emmy® statues were awarded to 180 individuals. Wreaths Across America Ceremonies Result in 120-Plus News Clips for CAP SUMMARY OVERVIEW A national news release about Civil Air Patrol’s Wreaths Across America activities and a hometown news release prepared for local events was used by wing and squadron public affairs officer to get live coverage for the organization. More than 70 print/broadcast stories mentioning CAP were published on and after National Wreaths Across America Day on Dec. 14. The regionally publicity was impressive, led by a story from Fort Snelling, Minn., that aired on KSTP- TV, the ABC affiliate in Minneapolis/St. Paul. Other CAP ceremonies for Wreaths Across America that received good coverage included those held in Lubbock, Texas; Webb City, Mo.; La Crosse, Wis.; Erie, Pa.; and St. George, Utah. In all, counting both the pre- and post- publicity, there were 120-plus stories mentioning CAP, a significant increase from 2012 when only about 75 stories were received. She is also a humanitarian who assists in charitable, non-profit, and community causes. Born on October 20, 1947, in Louisville, Kentucky, Pearson is the daughter of Hattie Wallace Jones Pearson is the daughter of Hattie Wallace Jones Edmondson and the late Maurice Jones. Like her mother, Pearson attended Catholic schools during her formative and high school years. Her mother, who worked her way through school, attended St. Mary’s Academy in New Orleans, Louisiana, a prestigious boarding school for black females. Her mother was also one of the first black women to work at the Louisville Post Office. Pearson knew at an early age that she would pursue a career in communications. One of her part time jobs in high school included working at the local black owned radio station where she did voice over work and read prayers on the station’s religious programs. She also sang country music as a teenager on a television show called Hayloft Hoedown. Pearson pursued and obtained her B.S. degree in English from the University of Louisville.
