Aspects of the biology and ecology of the black-winged termite, Odontotermes formosanus Shiraki, were examined in a grove of camphor trees, Cinnamomum camphora (L.), located at the Fruit and Tea Institute, Wuhan, China. Of the 90 trees examined, 91.1% had evidence of termite activity in the form of exposed mud tubes on the bark. There was no relationship between tree diameter and mud tube length. Mud tubes faced all cardinal directions; most (60%) trees had multiple tubes at all directions. However, if a tree only had one tube, 22.2% of those tubes faced the south. -

They rely mostly on the entozoic fauna for the digestion of cellulosic materials. The present study is based upon the diversity of flagellates protists isolated from the gut of a lower termite, Heterotermes indicola, belonging to three genera i.e. Holomastigotes (H. campanula, H. annandalei and H. metchnikowi), Holomastigotoides (H. hemigynum, H. hartmanni, H. kempi, H. koidzumi and H. metchnikowi) and Pseudotrichonympha (P. grassii). The largest and most abundant species Pseudotrichonympha grassii was identified by molecular studies using the SSU rRNA gene, confirmed by phylogenetic analysis and compared with that of the P. grassii isolates reported from other parts of the world. The results showed that the P. grassii observed in our study was phylogenetically most closely related to the Japanese P. grassii isolate. The biodiversity of the entozoic flagellates is important in targeting for biological control of termites as well as for isolation and culturing of flagellates to produce cellulases, an important industrial enzyme. -

Fifteen species of termites belonging to subfamilies Apicotermitinae, Kalotermitidae, Macrotermitinae and Nasutitermitinae, were recorded. The fungus growing termites (Macrotermitinae) accounted for 66.66% abundance, across the states. The Apicotermitinae (soil feeders) and Kalotermitidae (dry wood termites) registered 6.62% each and the dry wood termites (Nasutitermitinae) recorded 20.1% abundance. Among the different species of termites, Odontermes obesus, was more predominant (15.62%) than others. Termiticidal Activity of Bifenthrin and Fipronil Against Mound Building Termite Odontotermes Redemanni Wasmann

PERERA2 1 Plant Protection Service, Gannoruwa, Sri Lanka 2 Plant Protection Service Subunit, Bombuwala, Sri Lanka ABSTRACT Bifenthrin 10% SC (Maxxthor) and Fipronil 25% EC (Premise) obtained from two new sources were tested during 2014 to determine their termiticidal activity against the mound building termite Odontotermes redemanni Wasmann. Termitariaat open landscape in School of Agriculture, Kundasale, Kandy was randomly as the source of termite. Two new chemicals (Maxxthor and Premise), two reference chemicals (Biflex® and Agenda®) and water (control) were used as treatments with three replicates. Tendried sticks (60 cm long and three cm diameter) of Kapok (Ceibapentandra) were treated and inserted into each termitarium allowing the termites to feed on. Sticks were removed at two time intervals: four and eight weeks and weighed separately to measure the wood consumption. Analysis of variance showed highly significant differences (p=0.0001) in wood consumption among the treatments: chemicals and water treated termitaria. Maximum wood consumption (88.4g/8 weeks) was recorded in water treated termitaria. However no significant difference in wood consumption was observed between chemically treated termitaria. Both chemicals irrespective of their active ingredients, formulation or country of origin, performed equally against O. Redemanni revealing that they are appropriate termiticides to control mound building termite problem in Sri Lanka. Key words: Chemical control, Termites, Termitaria, Termiticide, wood consumption. Serratia marcescens have a high lethal efect on O. formosanus, but the specifc insecticidal mechanisms of S. marcescens on O. formosanus are unclear, and the immune responses of O. formosanus to S. marcescens have not been clarifed. At present, genetic database resources of O. formosanus are extremely scarce. Therefore, using O. formosanus workers infected by S. marcescens and the control as experimental materials, a full-length transcriptome was sequenced using the PacBio Sequel sequencing platform. A total of 10,364 isoforms were obtained as the fnal transcriptome. The unigenes were further annotated with the Nr, Swiss-Prot, EuKaryotic Orthologous Groups (KOG), Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) Ortholog public databases. In a comparison between the control group and a Serratia marcescens-infected group, a total of 259 diferentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identifed, including 132 upregulated and 127 downregulated genes. Pathway enrichment analysis indicated that the expression of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway, oxidative stress genes and the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway in O. formosanus may be associated with S. marcescens treatment. This research intensively studied O. formosanus at the high-throughput full-length transcriptome level, laying a foundation for further development of molecular markers and mining of target genes in this species and thereby promoting the biological control of O. -

They pose a serious threat to agricultural, horticultural crops, forestry trees, and wooden structures. Use of entomopathogenic fungus can be a ecofriendly approach as comparable to chemical insecticides for control of various castes of termites. Entomopathogenic fungi are important natural enemies of arthropods and can be used as biological control agents. Bio efficacy of different concentrations of entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin were evaluated against nymphs of termite Odontotermes obesus (R.) in laboratory conditions. The treatment results clearly revealed that the rate of mortality was increased with concentration and exposure period of treated dose of Beauveria bassiana on nymph of termite.
