A letter from the HOA Board President:

Cascades Wants You!

Ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country. – John F. Kennedy

All of us were much, much younger when President Kennedy uttered those inspiring words many decades ago. But that message of service, volunteerism, and working together did seem to resonate with and inspire many of us (then) young Americans at the time. The idea that our country, state, or town is only as good or as successful as the efforts of its citizens is fundamental to the workings of a democracy. Put simply, we all need to roll up our sleeves and contribute.

The idea applies equally to a community association such as ours. We need to leverage the talents and efforts of all members of the community to continue to be successful and thrive. It is easy, especially in an over-55 community, to adopt the notion that “I’ve paid my dues” and now it’s time to let someone else to do the work.

It’s true that we are very lucky and have much to be thankful for. In essence, we In this issue: have won life’s lottery: we’ve had successful careers, raised our families, and now are entitled to settle down and enjoy the fruits of our labors. However, it Cascades’ Committees is that lifelong experience and skill that I know so many of us bring to the table page 2 that has such value in ensuring that our community runs well and thrives.

The recent shocking collapse of the condominium in Surfside is a tragic reminder News page 3 - 5 of the need for wise and active stewardship in a community. While we are not a high-rise condo, communities can also decay and die in other ways through neglect and inattention. As our community infrastructure ages, maintenance, Travel repair, and replacement become more frequent needs. This requires oversite page 9 and planning.

When Wendy and I moved to Cascades four years ago, and began attending Birthdays & Anniversaries board meetings, the efforts and dedication of the board members at that page 12 time greatly impressed me. They took their responsibilities seriously and the attention to the infrastructure and financial health of the association confirmed that we had made a very good selection for a place to live.

Believe me, initially I had no intention of running for the board, but over time I grew to feel that I wanted to contribute in some way to the community. The rest, as they say, is history.
