Leta 1901 zgrajeni Zmajski most je bil prva pomembna secesijska arhitektura v mestu. Glavnino secesijskih stavb so zgradili v prvem desetletju 20. stoletja v območju med starim mestnim jedrom in železniško postajo, tj. ob Miklošičevi Krisperjeva hiša – detajl fasadne dekoracije / Krisper House – detail cesti in v obrobju Miklošičevega parka. Ta del mesta je of the façade decoration zato tudi dobil vzdevek secesijska Ljubljana. 4 5 Introduction At the turn of the 20th century, a number of European cities saw the emergence of a new artistic movement whose goals were the same wherever it appeared, but it found different local expressions and was known by different names: Art Nouveau (new art), Jugendstil (youth style), Modern Style, École de Nancy (Nancy school), Glasgow Style, Modernisme (modernism), Liberty, style floreale (floral style), Secession, etc. The new movement embraced all artistic fields, from architecture, painting, and sculpture to applied arts, theatre, music, literature, and fashion. The main motto of Art Nouveau was Art in everything – art for everyone and its highest goal to create a total work of art, the so called Gesamtkunstwerk, which combines architecture and figurative arts into a harmonious whole. The new art was both commissioned and consumed by the wealthy middle class, so the new style was distinctly bourgeois. Seeking to emulate the aristocracy, Palača kmečke posojilnice – detajl dekoracije / Agricultural Loan the bourgeoisie paid a lot of attention to the splendour Bank building – detail of the façade decoration of their residences, which consequently became total works of art par excellence. The new art developed entirely new aesthetic ideals It is interesting that the new art developed and and a more liberated and lighter way of expression. LJUBLJANA T O W N T R A I L ART NOUVEAU ART NOUVEAU - ART RENOUVEAU 2014-2017 THERE ARE NO STRAIGHT LINES OR SHARP CORNERS IN NATURE. THEREFORE, BUILDINGS MUST HAVE NO STRAIGHT LINES OR SHARP CORNERS. ANTONIO GAUDI LJUBLJANA ART NOUVEAU The term »Secession Ljubljana« (the term »secession« in Slovenia is used after the example of the Vienna Secession) is a name for the neighbourhood between the old city centre and the main train station. This neighbourhood was mostly (re)built between the years of 1895 and 1910. It includes many important and well preserved architectural art works, but its pride is mostly in the richly decorated facades, which give it a special character. On Easter, the 14th of April 1895 Ljubljana, with 31,000 citizens and 1,400 buildings, was shaken by a very strong earthquake. About 10% of the buildings had to be demolished and all the rest were in need of a restoration. The city turned into a vivacious building site, in the next decade over 400 buildings were made, many were restored, electrical public lighting was introduced in the city and the sewage system was improved. A renaissance of the city began, that left important traces in the city centre all until today. MIKLOŠIČ SQUARE The square infront of the Judge Palace was first symbolically called the Slovenian square and was made by the plans of Maks Fabiani in 1900. The park was almost completely surrounded by buildings, built between the years 1900 and 1907 and represents the most beautiful Secession ambient in Ljubljana.

These goals play an important role in promoting social progress. The key characteristic of progressive cities should be their openness to the general public and equal accessibility for everyone regardless of their gender, race, age, or social status, and under the same conditions. Public buildings with their associated public spaces form an integral part of the city. For public buildings to be truly public these should follow the same principles as the open city. And it is architecture that has the power to design such truly public buildings. Unfortunately, Slovenia has not yet recognized that it could constitute itself as a modern state through the architecture of public buildings. Keywords: state, values of social progress, public building This article deals with the topical issues of the architecture of public buildings in Slovenia after 1991 viewed through the social values of progress. The introductory presentation of the issues and key terms (state, social values of progress, public building) is followed by an attempt to find the answer to the question which principles of the modern state should public buildings reflect and enforce, using the listed references (the primary reference being an essay by Richard Sennett entitled The Open City).

  • Architecture of the 2Oth Century
Architecture of the 2oth Century The present book is a somewhat different overview of 2oth cen tury architecture in Slovenia. The selection of presented buildings is austere since it was dictated by the purpose of the book and its scope. The selected works are not only the outstanding buildings that came into existence in Slovenia in the last century. The authors of the book, architects and art historians, have selected typical creations of the past, characteristic evidence of progress in land development, theo retical thinking and architecture in our surroundings. The purpose of this selection is to encourage public debate and conservation evalua tion, and to facilitate better and more professional protection of all the outstanding historical buildings of the 2oth century, not only cul tural monuments and the creations of famous authors, the mainstays of the development of fine arts. The artistic value was one of the prin ciples of selection, since individual buildings and entities are to be considered as to their function, social value and historical relevance. We attempted to include as many architects as possible and all re gions of Slovenia. The chronological context of the book is defined as the period af ter the First World War, since the architecture created before 1920 has already been presented in another publication within The Euro pean Heritage Days Series. The final chronologicallimit of the selec tion was dose to the year 2000, although it is usually preferred to conclude the period somewhat earlier and evaluate the artefacts from a more distant point in time. The chronological definition of the be: ginning was further conditioned by a new creative enthusiasm after the First World War and the establishment of the first university in Slovenia in Ljubljana with a department of architecture.

You can start your path anywhere you like, but make sure to walk the whole path and collect as many correct answers as possible. Estimated time of the task is 90 minutes. A SECESSION LJUBLJANA The term »Secession« in Slovenia is used following the example ! of the Vienna Secession (in other European countries the terms Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, Modern Style, Liberty, etc. are also used as a name for this period), because in the Art Nouveau period, the Slovenian territory was a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and numerous Slovenian artists and architects studied in Vienna. The term » Ljubljana Secession « is a name for the neighbourhood between the old city centre and the main railway station. This neighbourhood was mostly rebuilt between the years of 1895 and 1910.
