Agbeko2 1 Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, University of Cape Coast, Cape Coast, Ghana 2 Department of Animal Science, University of Cape Coast, Cape Coast, Ghana *Corresponding author Abstract Aspects of the feeding habits and diet of juveniles of the cassava croaker Pseudotolithus senegalensis (Valenciennes, 1833) (Sciaenidae) and bigeye grunt Brachydeuterus auritus (Valenciennes, 1831) (Haemulidae) in the inshore waters of Cape Coast, Ghana are reported in the study. Both species had a similar diet consisting of larvae of fish, shrimps and cuttlefish. The croaker ingested prey up to 77% of its total length while the bigeye grunt consumed prey up to 70% of its total length. Analysis of the stomach contents, based on the frequency of occurrence, and numerical and gravimetric compositions of these food items indicated that shrimps were the main food of P. senegalensis while B. auritus fed mainly on fish. While shrimps constituted the predominant food of the croakers all-year-round, the bigeye grunts appeared to shift their preference for fish to shrimps from June to September. The results of the study are compared with those on croakers from other parts of the Gulf of Guinea. The study, however, appears to be the first to give a detailed account of the food preference and feeding ecology of the bigeye grunt. Volume 9 (Jan – Jun 2006) Page 1 of 1 .

These freshwater ecosystems in the region, are abundantly endowed with fish species such as Clarias gariepinus, Pila ovate, Labeo coubie, Synodontis budgetti and Synodontis eupterus. Apart from the freshwaters, the region also has vast marine ecosystem with abundance of fish species such as Elops lacerta, Mugil cephalus, Thais coronata, Periophthalmus papilio, Tympanotonus fuscatus, and Sardinella maderensis. Unfortunately, many of these fish species are endangered due to constant pollution in the Niger delta regional coastal environment. As a result, it is important to document some available freshwater and marine water fish species which will serve as a reference material for both academics and research institutions, should any of the fish species go into extinction. Specimens were caught with various types of gears deployed in continental shelf waters of Côte d’Ivoire by the artisanal fishers residing at Sassandra (in the southwestern part of this country), some 272 kilometres away from Abidjan, the capital city. These gears include the drifting gillnet, stationary gillnet, bottom gillnet, beach seine,purse seine and longline. Here, we present the data collected from October 2017 to March 2019. The results indicated that overall species observed numbered 112 and comprised fish, crustaceans, cephalopods and gastropods. Fish were the most abundant species, accounting for 92.86 % of total species observed in the landings. An attempt was made at comparing our data with the catch data collected a year earlier by the local Office for Aquaculture and Fisheries Statistics (the “Bureau Aquaculture et Pêche”, BAP - Sassandra). Confirmation of fish dominating the catches was obtained, as fish accounted for 95.13 % of total specimens landed and for 99.29 % of the yield, far exceeding Crustaceans, of which pink shrimp Penaeus notialis Pérez- Farfante, 1967 were the commonest.

Fifty six finfish families were observed, comprising ninety seven species from eighty two genera. Ten commercially important finfish families were identified out of which the Haemulidae had the highest number of occurrence and distribution with catch per unit area (CPUA) of 36.17 Kg/Km 2. The Carangidae with CPUA of 22.09 Kg/Km 2 was the lowest in abundance and distribution of the important finfish families. The total biomass estimate of finfish from the entire survey area under investigation was 440 tons (t). The middle stratum, S2 (30 m – 70 m) had the highest biomass followed by the land adjoining stratum, S1 (10 m -30 m) and the least stratum biomass was obtained from the farthest stratum, S3 (70 m – 100 m).
