Today begins your magnificent tour through one of this year’s top travel destinations. Upon arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, you’ll be warmly greeted by one of our representatives and transferred to your hotel in Colombo. This fantastic city brings together the old and the new as its gorgeous Colonial ruins and buildings contrast with modern high-rise hotels and commercial banks. DAY 2 Destination Negombo Weligama Meals included Breakfast Hotel 5 Weligama Bay Marriott Resort & Spa , or similar Enjoy a late start to the day, with plenty of time to relax and adjust after your flight yesterday. A little after breakfast there will be a welcome briefing with the group before we begin our guided city tour. Colombo is a vibrant place with a laidback ambience. It's also a melting pot of cultures and religions, with a mix of Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu and Roman Catholic residents. Our walk today will cover the main spots in the city, taking in the local architecture and offering insight into the local lifestyle. We will visit both Buddhist and Hindu temples, the Dutch Reformed Church and the mesmerising Red Mosque, all while learning about Sri Lanka’s complex and fascinating history. We’ll also tour the bustling and colourful Pettah Bazaar – a whirlwind of sights, sounds and scents – as well as Independence Square, Parliament and the National Museum. Our city tour will finish with a shopping opportunity for a good cause at the Barefoot fair-trade store. Here you can find a collection of handicrafts from around the country and support local cottage industries. Following our tour, we will depart Colombo and head for the carefully preserved colonial city of Galle, which features an interesting blend of European architecture and South-Asian traditions. Upon arrival in Galle we will take a tour of the Old Town of Galle and its fortifications – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We'll meander through winding passageways, a maze of gallery-filled narrow streets and 400 years of rich history. Afterwards, we will continue on to Weligama, a beach town on the south coast where we will check in to our hotel for the evening. This afternoon we will transfer to Yala National Park and enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant before we begin our afternoon jeep safari. The National Park encompasses a variety of diverse ecosystems and an impressive array of wildlife, including sloth bears, elephants and lots of exotic birds. We’ll search for the leopards that lounge in trees or stalk through the brush, crocodiles that patrol the river or wild elephants that graze across the savanna. Many of the species that we will see are endemic to Sri Lanka. DAY 5 Destination Tissamaharama Ravana Falls Nuwara Eliya Meals included Breakfast, Dinner Hotel 5 The Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya, or similar This morning enjoy some leisure time at the hotel surroundings before transferring to Nuwara Eliya (Approx 4.5hours). En-route why not try one of Sri Lankas favourite ingredients, buffalo curd, served in bright terracotta pots with thick, golden treacle, often eaten as a snack, as an accompaniment to meals or as a dessert. Sri Lankan's are famed for their sweet tooth and this is just about as sweet as it gets. We also make a photo stop at Ravana Falls in Ella. The Ravana Falls (popularly known as Ravana Ella in Sinhala) is a popular sightseeing attraction in Sri Lanka. It currently ranks as one of the widest falls in the country. This waterfall measures approximately 25 m (82 ft) in height and cascades from an oval-shaped concave rock outcrop. During the local wet season, the waterfall turns into what is said to resemble an area flower with withering petals. But this is not the case in the dry season, where the flow of water reduces dramatically. We then head to Nuwara Eliya and commence a small orientation tour around this quaint town, before checking into our Inspiring Stay at the iconic Grand Hotel, where then the remainder of the day is at your leisure. OPTIONAL TOUR - OPTIONAL INSPIRING SIGHT -MORNING JEEP SAFARI You may choose to include 2 optional Inspiring Sights throughout your tour, free as part of your package. Jump into a Jeep and enjoy another safari tour as we search for the animals that eluded us yesterday. Embark on a tea tour through the factory to experience the makings of world-famous Ceylon Tea's from start to finish, including tastings. You may also get the opportunity to get up close and personal with the local tea pluckers. Today we also visit the famous Hakgala Botanical Gardens, where then the rest of the day is at your leisure. Later this afternoon, enjoy the infamous High Tea back at The Grand Hotel. DAY 7 Destination Nuwara Eliya around Nuwara Eliya Kandy Meals included Breakfast, Dinner Hotel 5 Amaya Hills , or similar Today, we say farewell to Nuwara Eliya as we hop on what is widely recognised as one of the world’s most scenic train rides, winding around mist-shrouded hilltops and through vivid green valleys. The original train system in Sri Lanka was introduced in 1864 to transport tea from the hills to Colombo, but today it serves as a fantastic way to see Sri Lanka’s magical landscapes. You’ll have the chance to experience the tea culture of Sri Lanka on a tour and tasting of the famous Ceylon Tea, in Nuwara Eliya. Ceylon (Sri Lankan) tea is known for its quality worldwide, and with this guided tour you'll learn how the entire process works, from plucking to drying to packing and more.

  • CHAPTER 4 Perspective of the Colombo Metropolitan Area 4.1 Identification of the Colombo Metropolitan Area
Urban Transport System Development Project for Colombo Metropolitan Region and Suburbs CoMTrans UrbanTransport Master Plan Final Report CHAPTER 4 Perspective of the Colombo Metropolitan Area 4.1 Identification of the Colombo Metropolitan Area 4.1.1 Definition The Western Province is the most developed province in Sri Lanka and is where the administrative functions and economic activities are concentrated. At the same time, forestry and agricultural lands still remain, mainly in the eastern and south-eastern parts of the province. And also, there are some local urban centres which are less dependent on Colombo. These areas have less relation with the centre of Colombo. The Colombo Metropolitan Area is defined in order to analyse and assess future transport demands and formulate a master plan. For this purpose, Colombo Metropolitan Area is defined by: A) areas that are already urbanised and those to be urbanised by 2035, and B) areas that are dependent on Colombo. In an urbanised area, urban activities, which are mainly commercial and business activities, are active and it is assumed that demand for transport is high. People living in areas dependent on Colombo area assumed to travel to Colombo by some transport measures. 4.1.2 Factors to Consider for Future Urban Structures In order to identify the CMA, the following factors are considered. These factors will also define the urban structure, which is described in Section 4.3. An effective transport network will be proposed based on the urban structure as well as the traffic demand. At the same time, the new transport network proposed will affect the urban structure and lead to urban development.

  • Preliminary Investigation on Weligama Coconut Leaf Wilt Disease: a New Disease in Southern Sri Lanka
Preliminary Investigation on Weligama Coconut Leaf Wilt Disease: A New Disease in Southern Sri Lanka H.T.R. Wijesekara*, L. Perera, I.R. Wickramananda, I. Herath, M.K. Meegahakumbura, W.B.S. Fernando and P.H.P.R. de Silva, Coconut Research Institute, Bandirippuwa Estate, Lunuwila 61150. * corresponding author, email: [email protected] ABSTRACT An unusual yellowing of leaflets in coconut palms in the Galle, Hambantota and Matara districts in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka was observed in late 2006. The symptoms associated with affected palms are flattening and downward bending of leaflets, yellowing of lower fronds followed by drying of leaflets starting from the margins. Symptoms resemble that of Kerala wilt disease in India. This condition was first reported from Weligama in Matara district and, hence called the "Weligama Coconut Leaf Wilt Disease" (WCLWD). Analysis of nutrients N, P, K, Ca and Mg in leaflets of affected and healthy palms revealed that, yellowing of leaflets has no relationship with nutrients. DNA extracts of bud leaves subjected to Nested PCR with phytoplasma specific primer pair combinations R16F2n / R16R2 with rU3 / fU5 and R16mF2 /R16R2 with fU5 /rU3 yielded an amplification of 773 base pair product in 3 of 24 palms tested. Sequencing of the PCR product confirmed phytoplasma as the causative agent of WCLWD. The sequence of the WCLWD was compared with the phytoplasma sequences deposited in the NCBI database and WCLWD sequence was found to be 98% similar to sugarcane grassy shoot phytoplasma and sugarcane white leaf phytoplasma. Apart from WCLWD, another fungal disease of coconut leaf rot disease was also observed in the same locations, sometimes in the same palm.

With its golden sandy beaches, azure blue waters and warm tropical climate, Sri Lanka is a year round destination for holidaymakers seeking sun, sand and sea. The island has a rich cultural heritage that dates back over 2,000 years which is linked to the origins of Buddhism in the country with magnificently constructed stupas and the ruins of ancient kingdoms. Controlled from the 16th century onwards by the Portuguese, Dutch and finally the British prior to gaining full independence in 1948, the influences of colonial powers remain visible in architecture and a number of forts across the country. Sri Lanka is recognised as a global biodiversity hotspot with a rich variety of endemic flora and fauna, and incredibly for a small island, can boast of large iconic animals such as the Asian Elephant, Leopard and the largest animal to have inhabited our planet, the Blue Whale.
