  • From Conformity to Protest: the Evolution of Latinos in American Popular Culture, 1930S-1980S
From Conformity to Protest: The Evolution of Latinos in American Popular Culture, 1930s-1980s A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in the partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of History of the College of Arts and Sciences 2017 by Vanessa de los Reyes M.A., Miami University, 2008 B.A., Northern Kentucky University, 2006 Committee Chair: Stephen R. Porter, Ph.D. Abstract “From Conformity to Protest” examines the visual representations of Latinos in American popular culture—specifically in film, television, and advertising—from the 1930s through the early 1980s. It follows the changing portrayals of Latinos in popular culture and how they reflected the larger societal phenomena of conformity, the battle for civil rights and inclusion, and the debate over identity politics and cultural authenticity. It also explores how these images affected Latinos’ sense of identity, particularly racial and ethnic identities, and their sense of belonging in American society. This dissertation traces the evolution of Latinos in popular culture through the various cultural anxieties in the United States in the middle half of the twentieth century, including immigration, citizenship, and civil rights. Those tensions profoundly transformed the politics and social dynamics of American society and affected how Americans thought of and reacted to Latinos and how Latinos thought of themselves. This work begins in the 1930s when Latin Americans largely accepted portrayals of themselves as cultural stereotypes, but longed for inclusion as “white” Americans. The narrative of conformity continues through the 1950s as the middle chapters thematically and chronologically examine how mainstream cultural producers portrayed different Latino groups—including Chicanos (or Mexican Americans), Puerto Ricans, and Cubans.

  • A.K.A. Pablo: Mexican American Images for Television Norman L
a.k.a. Pablo: Mexican American Images for Television Norman L. Friedman The study of "minority group images in mass media" has been of considerable interest both to humanities and social science writers in the ethnic and media fields. Most investigations have focused upon the descriptive content of the minority portrayals, though a few have also dealt with related aspects of minority group reactions to images. Among the large volume of varied writings have been those which have considered minority group images in films,1 images of Asian Americans in print and electronic media,2 dissections of single television shows about minorities,3 and responses of minority audiences and media critics to television portrayals oftheir group.' In general, studies have tended to find minority media images inaccurate, inadequate, and too infrequent. Explanations for these tendencies have usually emphasized how mass media reflect prejudices existing in the culture of the larger society, the faulty perceptions or decisions ofthe image·makers (writers, producers, Iiirectors, executive programmers), and the underrepresentation of minority persons in important and powerful image-shaping mass media positions. Media images of minorities have often reflected the changing societal status of a given group. Such was the case in the spring of 1984 when an important media event came and went. A new Norman Lear television situation comedy about Mexican Americans-a.k.a. Pablo-aired six episodes from March 6 through April 10, but subsequently was not ;enewed by the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) network for the following season. Nonetheless, a.k.a. Pablo was the firstmajor prime time show since Chico and the Man in 1974 to convey images of Mexican Americans to television's prime-time millions, and at a time when growth and influence of Hispanics in the United States were being increasingly noted and publicized.

  • The Coalition Does Not Believe That the FISR Must Be Preserved in Perpetuity. Future Changes in the Television Marketplace May W
The Coalition does not believe that the FISR must be preserved in perpetuity. Future changes in the television marketplace may well warrant relaxation of the Rule, and, ultimately, its repeal. That day, however, has not arrived. While the Coalition therefore supports Commission review of the Rule, undertaking a review of the FISR every two years has simply resulted in higher costs for the industry, both in terms of business uncertainty and transaction costs, as parties attempt to adapt to a rapidly changing regulatory landscape. Moreover, marketplace changes of the magnitude that would render the FISR unnecessary are unlikely to occur in a two-year period. Consequently, the Coalition urges the Commission to commit to review the Rule again in 1999. There is nothing to be lost, but much to be gained, from permitting the Commission this additional time to review the consequences of its deregulatory actions. On the one hand, a number of the trends discussed above -- e.g., the increase in in-house production, the reduction in production by small producers -- are continuing ones. It is impossible to determine, at this early stage, when the marketplace will reach some new equilibrium, or what that equilibrium will look like. In addition, once the marketplace has fully adjusted to the new regulatory regime, it will take some time to measure and evaluate the public interest consequences of the changes that have taken place. On the other hand, under a strengthened FISR, the networks will continue to be able to acquire financial interests in programs, subject to the separate negotiation safeguard. This will permit the marketplace to realize any efficiencies associated with network participation in program financing.

INFORMATION TO USERS While the most advanced technology has been used to photograph and reproduce this manuscript, the quality of the reproduction is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material submitted. For example: ® Manuscript pages may have indistinct print. In such cases, the best available copy has been filmed. • Manuscripts may not always be complete. In such cases, a note will indicate that it is not possible to obtain missing pages. • Copyrighted material may have been removed from the manuscript. In such cases, a note will indicate the deletion. Oversize materials (e.g., maps, drawings, and charts) are photographed by sectioning the original, beginning at the upper left-hand corner and continuing from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps.
