The feelings must have been right, as Melissa has been under contract to Komack over the past year and is now the major co-star with Joe Santos ^pictured with Melissa) in the new series. What Melissa didn't know is that James Kom ack’s daughter, Maxx, for whom the series is named, made Melissa the instant winner in the auditions. Komack had tested hundreds of young­ sters for the role and was home looking at tests when his daughter walked in, saw Melissa for a moment and said. "That's her. The little blonde girl. That's Maxx!" She immediatley turned around and walked out of the room, but proved to be right, as her father and the network both came to realize they did have an instant winner in young Melissa Michaelsen. The Bremen club will award $50.00 cash to the winner and $20.00 to the runner-up in Class A. There will be trophies awarded in all classes. Mike Gardner is the defending champion. Classes A and B be made up of 16 men each, being divided into two groups of 8 men each, playing a round robin. The top two men of each group will advance to the 4-man play-off finale. Class B will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 14. Class A will start at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 15. All other classes will follow Class A and B playing their games during the week, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Cash awards will be given in Class B. Quite by accident we were on the mailing list advertising Krupa drum­ sticks and Krupa publications. It is from the “World of Gene Krupa” book we’ve excerpted the following Gene Krupa comments, presented in interview style. BBJ host Don Kennedy interviewed Gene Krupa in 1949 or early 1950 when Krupa was appearing at the Palace Theater in Youngstown, Ohio. The interview was set up for one o’clock in the morning, after the last of the six or seven daily ‘live’ performances between showings of the feature movie.
