DISTRICT LEADER REPORTS

NC West District District Superintendent Report Conference Year 2019-2020

I spent some time reading stories from diaries, newspapers, and other accounts of the pandemic that raced around the globe in 1918. There were many familiar themes. Like today, there was a good bit of opinion on the best ways to battle the pandemic. It serves as a stark reminder that when the many experts have divergent viewpoints it may well be that they really don’t know. That was a bit more acceptable in 1918 than it is now. That was before we landed on the moon, created the internet, and had the ability to spread knowledge, opinion and gossip via the avenues of social media. No one really does well grappling with the unknown but it does seem that the more we have, the more we feel like we have to lose. There were debates about masks in 1918. There were differences about the need for churches to close down. It was not an election year so there was not the same sense of racing to blame the other party for all that ails us. That lower sense of blame was also true because there was a greater sense of statesmanship, a better sense of unity, (we weren’t always at odds with the people we shared communities with), and without a doubt there was a greater sense of faith. We know that the nation and the world survived the Spanish Flu, albeit with a significant sense of loss. We know that we were able to recover, rebuild and thrive. But what will be the end story of the current pandemic? Will a greater percentage die than 100 years ago, making this the greatest modern pandemic? Will the economy survive the steps taken to prop it up, and if so, how bad will the damage be? Can we solve our racial unrest? And most of all, what will the church look like on the other side of this combination of challenges? The church growth experts are already weighing in. Some say a significant percentage will never return to church, having grown used to the lack of regularly connecting with a body of believers. Others say that church will never be the same and that the buildings, methods, and communities we had constructed will be so vastly different that we may never catch up to the moving curve of change. Some look for a mighty revival, thinking that once we can meet freely again then people will have a renewed appreciation fora place to express and live out their faith. I think all the above could be correct, though obviously not on the comprehensive impact. There will be those who do not return, many of them were on their way out before the first cases of Covid-19 hit our shores. Who knows how long it will be before some ever feel comfortable assembling again in a larger group - I think some will write that practice off for the rest of their lives. And, I believe there is such a great chance for revival. People do not wish to live in doubt, conflict and chaos forever. Regardless of their affiliations, beliefs, and theories on the cultural divide that has arisen there’s too much history of people coming to their end and realizing that no human system, philosophy, or effort is able to fix an inner spirit that is broken or lacking—only God can do that. The choice is really yet to be made. Don’t get me wrong, there are already seeds of decisions that are shaping the future but the contest is not over. If you would allow an analogy, I’m not sure we are out of the first quarter yet. In some churches and communities, the scoreboard deficit may seem insurmountable. In many others, the two com- petitors are still feeling each other out and there are key decisions that will shape the outcome. So, what plays should we call? What adjustments need to be made? I have been logging time in Romans 12 lately. Most of us would recognize the chapter as our key admonition to not be swept into the world’s mold but to be trans- formed by allowing our minds to be renewed. That is a great foundation but I’ve been looking intently at the impera- tives beyond that. I’d like to share some of those along with accompanying thoughts. I‘ll be sharing the verses from the translation called The Message. I realize that it is a paraphrase and not a literal translation. I use it because it will allow sharing the truths without digging into Greek word translations and cross references. I use it realizing that it will raise the concerns of building doctrine upon paraphrases. I will do my best to be sure it’s fair to the original meaning and you do your best to extend some grace. 49

Before I share that, allow me a moment to share why my focus is more on scripture and our own spiritual lives than a broader based address on how we address the issues that accompany the pandemic and racial unrest we face. I took the opportunity to look at how those who went before us faced the dual issues they faced in 1918; a pandemic that was many times more deadly than our current crisis and the beginning of the First World War. To be candid, the rec- ord of the meeting of the Wesleyans in the North Carolina Conference of The Wesleyan Methodist Connection in 1918 is a bit jarring. It’s not so much what was said, it’s what was not said.. Nine meetings. Eight services. Six days together. The words pandemic and/or flu do not appear, although there was a fervent prayer session in which the people cried out for healing. And the word “war” was only mentioned once, alt- hough they did pray “for those of our boys over in France”. I know they lacked social media and only had a handful of TV stations. I realize that they got most of their news from a papyrus that was delivered to their home and it was dat- ed at best. But shouldn’t they have been a bit more aware, at least postured a greater sense of concern? How out of touch could a group be? Could there be a chance that they knew exactly what they were doing? Could the lack of focus on the current cir- cumstances and the unbalanced attention on God actually been a more effective response? I’m sure the terms and concerns of the day were spoken of in meetings but the record is quite clear that they realized the solution was not present in the hearts and minds of those who gathered at the Colfax campground. They trusted God—without reser- vation. It appears that a key service was a testimony service on Sunday afternoon. A world wide war is raging, the sec- ond and most deadly wave of the pandemic had just occurred and they were having a testimony service? There’s not even a record of a social concerns committee reporting. I think those that went before us modeled something that we could use as counsel. There’s been no shortage of time invested on social media opinions, political campaigns and other forms of sharing our ideas as to what would repair the wounds of the day. Maybe the answer is beyond us and if so, that is the Good News.

Lessons From Lives not Molded by Culture, From Minds Transformed by His Spirit 1. If you preach, just preach God’s message, nothing else . . . To be fair, anything else you would add only serves to dilute the power. We don’t need more political commercials or social justice sayings. Those have just detoured people from the true Gospel. Our preaching really is a statement of faith—whenever we feel the need to add to it, we are proclaiming that God needs our help and we are lost before we begin. Will people know how to vote or which group to support if we don’t tell them? Maybe not, but if the Gospel isn’t allowed to transform, I’m not sure how much difference the other things can make. There is no shortage in our world of people telling everyone else what to do, how to think and where to act. Do you trust the Gospel or not? 2. If you are put in charge, don’t manipulate . . . The stewardship of influence is a lost art. God allows some to get into those places of influence to be a blessing and guide to others, not to use the influence for their own benefit. The next time you have a place for your voice to be heard realize that you can be like a Pharisee that created more self serving rules or like Jesus. He gathered His cloak and knelt in order to wash the feet of those too preoccupied to notice how they had missed the simplest of duties because of their thoughts of what the newly found influence might mean for them. 3. Love from the center of who you are, don’t fake it . . . Be good friends who love deeply . . . In a culture where isolation went from a choice to a mandate, there is an extreme shortage of people who can build bridges to other people. And people aren’t just isolated, they are overflowing with distrust after being used to achieve the purpose of others. The only cure for this is to connect one person at a time. There are people who are in the deepest despair that they have ever experienced, but they can sense false motives from several quarantine zones away. You will need to put down your Twitter, get off of Facebook and even stop posting on Instagram. It’s radical and risky, but someone needs you to look them in the eye and let them know that there is One who cares and He really is able to make all things new. 50

4. Don’t burn out, keep yourselves fueled and aflame . . . People are so discouraged and it’s harder than ever to “keep yourselves fueled and aflame”. In fact, since many be- lieve that the Pastor is supposed to feed them and the church has to meet their needs they are running on fumes or have been stranded on the roadside for weeks. Have you noticed how vibrantly alive believers are in countries filled with persecution, even when they can’t attend a church? Perhaps it’s because they finally took responsibility for their own spiritual well being and realized that The Word is powerful and the fellowship with other believers is critical. 5. Be alert servants of the Master, cheerfully expectant . . . Think about it, how many people do you know who are cheerfully expectant? That didn’t take very long. Even the comedians sound like they are introducing the Four Horsemen and the Angel of Death. It’s okay to believe and confess that you believe that things will be okay. 6. Don’t quit in hard times, pray all the harder . . . Remember all those times you read about the generation that died in the wilderness and could not believe they couldn’t see the benefits of the Promised Land? Or what about your disdain when the Disciples fled after Jesus’ arrest because they didn’t understand? Good thing we don’t know anyone like those people—just sayin’. 7. Be inventive in hospitality . . . Christians used to understand the power of hospitality. That was before and Amazon Prime. Hats off to the churches and believers who are finding great ways to connect even when governors, health officials, and other self appointed enjoyment suppression officers are telling us to stay away from everyone else. It is possible to maintain healthy practices and not endanger others while still acknowledging that they are cared for. There is lots more gold to mine in that chapter and in The Word. God help us to be focused on finding His way and overcoming this terminally dark cloud that continues to hover over all of us. I happen to believe that this may be the greatest opportunity we have in a lifetime to show unbelievers the contrast between a life of faith and a life of fear. I realize that the few thoughts run counter to the pain that many are experiencing. This virus has claimed lives and changed lives forever. The racial tensions we face are among the most intense we have seen in years and it seems the division is widening. I am not insinuating that we overlook our challenges, say a Christian catch phrase and move on— I just believe there is a better way to move forward. The last phrase from the passage in Romans says “Don’t let evil get the best of you, get the best of evil by doing good”. The pandemic has taken much away. We have lost a sense of security and safety, which might not be the worst thing. We have lost the ability to gather in large groups and meet whenever we want. But my reading of the 1918 Conference minutes reminded me of something we have lost that I had not considered—the power of a group testimo- ny service. Those special times are a reminder that we are not alone and that what may come will never be more powerful than the One who meets us in our greatest time of vulnerability. It seems that Romans 12 is encouraging us to join in a different kind of testimony service. Instead of a group sharing, agreeing and being encouraged, it is one person operating in faith, alone among many who have great fears and no hope. So, we can join the world’s conversation, on their terms or we can take a much narrower path than the one filled with fear and anger and constant assaults on unity. No one really knows what the church will look like after Covid-19 and how we will best navigate and share hope and healing in these days of racial unrest. No doubt, the challenge is great. But we face the future with a great team of pastors and church members and with a God who is able to do more than we could ask or even imagine. The Message paraphrases an early command in Romans 12 this way; “Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. “ It appears those who went before us determined to fix their attention on God. I pray we can all make that shift in a culture that heavily pressures us to make our needs and thoughts the priority. 51

ASSISTANT DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT 2019-2020 ANNUAL REPORT

It is hard to comprehend all that has changed since our last report to the annual District Conference. We were not able to meet this year for the first time in the history of our district due to the Corona Virus pandemic. In addition to this we have seen a fracturing of society across the country as there have been protests and riots sparked by the killing of George Floyd. There was a shut down that lasted for nearly eight weeks. Now, even months into the pandemic, a lot of businesses are still not open and the number of people allowed to gather is limited. Our churches have been very creative in trying to meet the needs of their communities. Almost all of our churches now have an online presence. Along with online services, churches have started drive-in services and those that have moved back into their facility have added multiple services to accommodate social distancing. Change can be very frustrating. Pastors and leaders are trying to accommodate people who have different opinions and reactions to all the things happening in our culture. It is a difficult time but history teaches us that whenever there is such change in culture, we can find stability and strength in the faithfulness of God.

We have dialogued several times with our African American pastors concerning the racial issues facing our society and how we can help minister during this time. These conversations have been through Zoom, at the DBA meeting and one on one. We have talked of how to open up conversation between churches and how we can simply be present with one another and for one another.

In a time of so much division, I am saddened that we will not be able to celebrate this year’s Ordination class together at Conference. This year we have 12 candidates for Ordination. Six of these candidates are from our Hispanic ministries. We are thankful as we see more people form our Hispanic congregations answer the call to ministry. The annual interviews were this spring. Due to the Covid-19 shut down, all of these were done via Zoom by the DBMD. Thirteen new ministerial students have been enrolled in the course of study. There are 87 students currently enrolled. We continue to work with the NC East District to offer a District Extension program called AVIVA for our Hispanic ministerial students. These courses combine online and in person learning.

This past year we had several spiritual formation events. Our Kids Camp and Youth Camp made a significant impact in the lives of those who attended. This continues to be an important ministry as children and students make first time professions of faith, and answer the call to ministry during the camps. We are thankful for the children and student pastors who give so much of themselves to plan, organize and lead the camps. Pastor Matt Mitchell led the Spiritual Formation team. They were able to host two events for training with Pastor Dan and Pastor Matt LeRoy. We also joined the NC East District for a Day of Solitude at Victory Mountain Camp.

We began the year with 90 Pastors organized into 12 LDJ groups across the District. These groups were meeting monthly or quarterly until the pandemic. As COVID 19 begin to spread, Pastor Jerry and I began weekly Zoom meetings for the Pastors. Most of these meetings were focused on helping Pastors navigate through restrictions and the constantly changing response to the pandemic. We had these meetings twice weekly from March-June.

On top of all this change, this has been a difficult time for my family. In January, Michelle was diagnosed with cancer. It is not a journey we ever wanted to walk but all the way we have seen God’s faithfulness. The support we have received from the district family has been overwhelming. We have seen the strength that comes from being a part of the body of Christ. We are thankful for all the love that has been shown to us. I especially would like to thank Pastor Jerry and Jean Ellen for their constant support. Nancy helps in so many ways and we appreciate her ministry to the district family. It is a pleasure to also work closely with Pastor Jose Minoso and our Hispanic ministries. We are thankful for all those God has used to support us and speak into our lives during these past few months.

2019-2020 District Children’s Ministry Director Report

First off, I want to say how thankful I am to be able to lead our district in this capacity. My heart beats for children to meet Jesus and begin a relationship with Him. I believe it is so important and I am thankful for the opportunity to partner with the churches in our district for this common goal.

Kids Camp 2019 was absolutely amazing! Each year God continues to blow our minds with His faithfulness and goodness. Kids Camp is my favorite week of the year!! Our theme was “Masterpiece” based off of Ephesians 2:10. We wanted each child to walk away knowing that they were God’s “masterpiece” and that God had created them special with a special purpose.

We kept our K-1 and 2nd-5th grade structure and feel like it is continuing to be a great option for us. We wsa a very similar number of children attend camp. We had 62 Junior Campers and 161 Senior Campers.

I am very thankful for the Kids Camp Committee who helped me lead camp this past year and the numerous volunteers we had who serve as cabin leaders, iGroup leaders, the evangelism team, teen workers, kitchen staff and those who are willing to jump in and do whatever it takes. We are so blessed with so many who have a heart for kids and join us to serve year in and year out. If you are one of those who serves with us- thank you!!

Looking forward, I am very excited about passing the leadership of camp to Rev. Elizabeth Covington. She is the Children’s Pastor at Hayworth Wesleyan and has a heart for not only children’s ministry, but camp as well. We transitioned her into the role of Camp Director in the fall. She has already done an incredible job of leading the camp committee and I know she will do a fantastic job moving forward.

This year has definitely looked very different in every sort of way. One of the things that hasn’t changed is the amount of time, dedication, prayer and energy that our Children’s Leaders have put into the ministries that God has called them too. As I watch the creativity of these leaders, it encourages my heart! Throughout the year, I have tried to stay connected with our children’s leaders through LDJ groups. It took me a little while to etg them started, but we have had a few this spring. I am looking forward to connecting more together and continuing to share ideas and encourage one another. If you are interested in being a part of this group, please let me know.

We will desperately miss having camp this summer! However, we are grateful for the partnership that we have with Camp Maranatha and their leadership to make the best decision for them. We are also thankful for that the planning and preparation that we had worked on will be able to roll over to 2021. When we confirm our dates for next summer, we will let you know. We can’t wait to see your kids there!

If your church ever needs anything, please let me know. I do not have all the answers and we are all striving to reach our communities the best that we know how, but I am here to help with resources, training or anything that you, your staff and your church families may need.

Thank you again for the opportunity to serve!

Rev. Kaylee Wilkerson

District Youth President Report Camp This year at camp we continued to grow in the number of students we have at camp. This is an amazing feeling because we are continuing to see new faces every year. Every year we also continue to see God move in new and amazing ways. It is hard to not take for granted the fact that every year God changes lives, breaks down walls, and does the unthinkable in students’ lives. I watch as youth pastors get opportunities to speak truth, love, and hope into the lives of students that would otherwise never give them a chance.

Unfortunately, we will not be able to have camp this year. With all of the restrictions and guidelines put in place from our local government we could not guarantee that we would be able to make camp happen at all; much less at a high level. While this is not what any of us wanted, I know that God is going to make camp so much better next year because of our desire to meet together again.

Convention This year we were able to see many of our district churches come together with youth from across the world at the Follow Wesleyan Youth Convention in Cincinnati, OH. As I spoke to youth pastors across the district it was great to see so many come together to get their students to and from the convention. I also learned of many students who have committed their lives to Christ from salvation to full time ministry because of this wonder- ful event.

Thank you to all of our churches who prayed, gave financially, and worked so hard to get your students to this convention. Your efforts will change your church forever.

District Youth Lock-In This year we had to cancel our Lock-In because of the threat of Coronavirus across our state and country. I can’t thank everyone enough for being so understanding during this crazy time.

We are already looking forward and preparing for what God is going to do when we are finally able to come back together. I know that we may have been slowed down for this season, but we are continuing to grow stronger.

It has been a thrill and privilege to serve as your DYP, particularly to fight alongside our amazing group of youth pastors & our gracious volunteers across this district for the hearts of our teens!

Sincerely, Rev. Jonathan Wilkerson, DYP

NC West District Wesleyan Women's Ministries June 15, 2020

On September 13-15, 2019, the Carolina Women's Retreat was held at Ridgecrest. The Bethel Worship Team ushered us into worship for each service and were enjoyed by all. Rev. Becky Davis brought us powerful messages to challenge our hearts. On Saturday morning ladies were encouraged to choose a breakout session from: 1) “When God Comes Calling” - Becky Davis 2) Crafting 3 “Great Expectations” - Missy Richardson from SC 4) “Using Ordinary Talents in Extraordinary Ways” - Rachel Collins from SC We received great reports from these breakout sessions and ladies were really encouraged. Although attendance was very low, those that attended were excited to hear from God and we are thankful. We, as a group, were blessed to provide the Davis' with a gift to aid in their return to the Philippines. On September 11-13, 2020, the Carolina Women's Retreat will be held at Doubletree in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Tammy Trent, singer and former speaker with Women of Faith and Extraordinary Women, will be our speaker and Dailey Segers, worship leader at Trinity Wesleyan in SC, will lead a team as our worship leaders for this event. We are hoping and praying for an exciting event. This has definitely been a trying year for everyone. We continue to press on, trusting in our God to see us through. We unite with you to pray and continue to seek God's guidance during this time. In His Service, Kim Harding NC West District Women's Ministries

Global Partners – NC West District Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ!

This was the second year serving as the Global Partners Director of our district and I praise the Lord that I could serve in this area. It was a busy year as we began a new mission project and I am grateful for all the churches and the district leadership that have help us get moving forward with this endeavor.

Our new mission project includes the fields of Suriname and Guyana. We are working with the district leaders of both fields and missionary Angie Hemric. We are excited to partner with both fields and looking forward to see- ing what God is going to do.

As we prepared to start our partnership, we had meetings with Larry French and Don Avore concerning the work in Suriname. Larry is our key contact for Suriname. We met with Angie Hemric while she was state side to discuss how we could partner with her and the work in Guyana.

In October D.S. Jerry Lumston and I spent a week in Suriname and Guyana. We had an opportunity to meet with the district leadership of both fields and discuss how we could partner with them. One way we have already helped in Guyana is helping to purchase a motor for a boat, so teachers could get to a remote area to train pastors. The Maiden church has supplied the funds for the skills center that Angie is heading up for the young people. Kannapolis First is leading the way with the Victoria Hope project. This project helps supply funds for kid’s school needs and tuition. They have been joined by Ragan, Bethel Hickory, Emmanuel Greensboro and United Wesleyan.

In Suriname, the Firestone Wesleyan Church sent a team to help put up the trusses for a roof on the new Albina Wesleyan Church structure. We are helping to fund the new outreach and church plant in Parimaribo. We also hope to send a team to help with children’s ministry and outreach to assist the Parimaribo project. D.S. Jerry and I both had an opportunity to share the Gospel in church services and saw people in both services making commitments to the Lord. We praise the Lord for using us, also for those who are already becoming a part of this project and hope more with join us in 2020-2021.

Here are other ways we can help:

Guyana

• A New Ministry Vehicle – They need to raise $15,000 for this new vehicle that is much needed to do various ministries in the country.

• Transition Home – This is the biggest dream and the cost is $100,000. This is to help those coming out of foster care to prepare them for their future. It would help give them hoe and inner healing.

• Mission teams – Teams to go and serve with work projects, kid ministry and many other ways to serve.

Suriname

• Water Supply project – The need is great to help have a water system that will supply them with water throughout the year. Firestone Wesleyan is already working toward this and could use more help.

76

• Church building repairs – Many of the church buildings ae in need of much repair. Some need roofs replaced, painting, and other needs.

• Education – The training of pastors is a great need. Some are trying to work on a master’s degree with IWU and others are trying to get basic trainings. Funds are needed in this area as well as people who can help teach courses.

• Outreach – The leaders of Suriname are wanting to do more outreach and are looking for new ways to reach the lost.

• Mission teams – Serve on a team to help in one of these projects and to help reach others for Christ.

If you want to be a part of the work God is doing in Guyana and Suriname please let me know. You can contact me at (704) 472-6304 or [email protected].

In His Service,

Curtis Williams

Spiritual Formation Director Report

The past year has obviously caused each of us to evaluate ministry through a new lens. The same is true from a spiritual formation perspective. As a committeee w have met and discussed ways in which we can help the pastors of our districts serve their churches in new and creative ways. Recently we sent an email offering assistance to pastors who are seeking new ways to minister online, phone conferencing, zoom meetings, and new computer software. We were able to assist a couple of pastors in these areas in an effort to help our Christian leaders continue the spiritual formation of individuals in our local churches in newways.

This past year has also caused us to reflect upon the future of District wide spiritual formation events. Knowing many individuals may continue to opt for staying away from large crowds we are looking into new models for these District events. Unlike last year, when we met at three different churches with Dan LeRoy and Matt LeRoy, we are researching how we can do an online conference with videos for individuals to engage. I have contacted RightNow Media about this great opportunity, but as of now, it may be best for us to use Youtube videos with the same speakers we would use with RightNow Media. I will meet with the Spiritual Formation committee in the near weeks and we will continue to discuss future plans. Until then, please know that we are seeking to do what is in the best interest of the people and souls under our care.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Matt Mitchell

EVANGELISM and CHURCH GROWTH 2019-20 ANNUAL REPORT

I believe one of the challenges facing the church multiplication movement during the pandemic will be the temptation for our ministries to become inward focused. During this time of uncertainty and with so much change happening around us, it will be easy to slip into a survival mentality. We will need to be diligent in keeping our eyes open to the harvest field that surrounds each of our existing churches. Even during this time of change and unrest, the mission of Christ for the church has not changed. We are to go and make disciples.

The E&CG committee this year has continued to explore areas to plant new churches. This is most effective when an existing church has a burden for an area or community near them. I hope that one of the things to come out of the pandemic is the increased opportunity for churches to reach into new communities and groups. We have limitless possibilities since most of our churches now have an online presence. Things that use to be obstacles in starting new ministries, like lack of volunteers, time and financial resources, can be overcome if we are innovative. In addition to beginning new ministries, we have offered events and training to strengthen our existing churches.

This past year we sponsored a Discipleship Meeting that over 20 of our pastors attended. The meeting was led by The Timothy Initiative (TTI). TTI is a church planting movement and strategy that focuses on disciples making disciples. The training is built on the concept that every believer is a disciple and every disciple is called to be a disciple maker. TTI has partnered with Converge to lead their international church planting movement. The strategy is much more organic than typical models that are used in the North American culture. It focuses on mentoring and relationship building. During the event, we were challenged to examine current discipleship models in our churches. We tend to place emphasis on teaching beliefs and information to those we are discipling. He challenged us to view discipleship more like an apprentice model. We teach and give information, but we also invest in those we are discipling by showing them how to live out their relationship with Jesus in everyday life. He stated that just as we examine the 5 levels of churches as defined by Exponential (and how we can move a church to the next level), we should look at those in our congregation and ask how can we disciple them to the next level in their walk with Jesus.

This past March we had 23 pastors attend Exponential. Exponential is the largest gathering of church planters and multipliers in the world. The purpose of the conference is to accelerate the multiplication of healthy reproducing faith communities. The conference has been a significant catalyst in the church growth of the Hispanic ministries in the district. It is our prayer that investing in our pastors and helping them attend events such as these, will spark a church planting movement across the district.

Pastor Jerry and I met with the African American Pastors in the district to discuss church planting and reaching into the African American Community. We had a very good discussion and each of the leaders expressed a desire to have a ministry modeled after the district’s Hispanic ministry. For several reasons they felt it important and most effective to reach into the African American community with churches and ministries that understand and are equipped to deal with the challenges of the culture and community. The pastors will be working together to form some guiding procedures that will assist in developing potential church planters. They will also develop expectations that can be communicated with groups who reach out to us seeking an affiliation or partnership.

On October 27th I was able to visit the Bunong Church. This is a group led by Nsang Bunyu. Nsang came to us through Pastor David Pittman and Charlotte First Wesleyan many years ago. Nsang wanted to reach other Bunong people in the Charlotte area with the Gospel. They meet at CORE church in Charlotte on Sunday evenings. The Sunday I was there they had 30 people. Nsang had some health problems over the last several months and we were not sure about the future of this group. The Lord has touched Nsang physically and he has a new excitement for the ministry of the church and reaching more people with the Gospel.

The Hispanic Churches in the district continue to lead the way in planting new ministries. This past year Pastor Gerson Carrillo Reyes began building a group to launch Nuevos Comienzos (New Beginnings). Pastor Gerson has served with Pastor Nestor at La Roca for the past several years and was just ordained at District Conference in 2019. The small group began meeting at Clemmons United Methodist in Clemmons, NC. The group was made up of mainly people from the High Point area so they decided to move closer to that area. Pastor Tom Raven and Wendover Hills opened the door of their facility to Pastor Gerson and New Beginnings. The start has been very slow due to the Covid-19 restrictions and the impact it has had on the Hispanic community. Pastor Gerson has connected well at Wendover Hills and will be looking to relaunch the ministry once restrictions are eased. He continues to make connections and disciple people to be a part of the launch team.

Pastor Nestor Gudino and the people of La Roca continue to do amazing things to reach new territory for the Kingdom. They actually moved from their church building to a school. The move allows them to have one service on Sunday morning and gives them more room to grow. They also believe this will be less demanding on the volunteers. They have room for their children’s program that had outgrown the space at the West Clemmonsville Road location. They had around 300 in attendance before the Covid 19 restrictions. They are still using the West Clemmonsville location for midweek meetings and the Young Adult and Youth ministries for all of the campuses. They are praying and moving toward starting a Saturday night worship service targeted at Young Adults at the West Clemmonsville location. The Greensboro campus also continues to grow. They now have the worship service at 1:30 on Sunday afternoons at Christ Wesleyan in Greensboro. They have 75-85 in attendance each week.

Pastor Oscar Nunez began meeting with a group to start a new campus and work in Forest City. Most of those who are currently involved with the group work at a local restaurant. They began by having service early on Sunday mornings but have since switched to Sunday evenings. This has worked better for those working in the restaurant and Pastor Oscar. They have 10-15 regularly attending the group. Pastor Jason Madison and Missionary Wesleyan have been very gracious to host the group and Pastor Eric Yelton and Forest City First have also been very supportive of the ministry. The Lord has done an amazing work at Light to the Nations. This church was about to close and had less than 10 people attending when Pastor Oscar began. They have grown to over 75 in Hendersonville. They have sent a group from the church to Asheville (Fuente de Vida). The group in Asheville is averaging 20-30 in regular attendance. Forest City will be the 2nd group to trace their roots back to Light to the Nations and Hendersonville.

Pastor Minoso and I had several conversations with Pastor Eduardo Diaz about his desire to move a congregation to Hickory, NC. Casa de Dios (House of God) is a group led by Pastor Eduardo of about 50 that meets in Granite Falls, NC. He reached out to us about moving this group to Hickory. He believes meeting in Hickory would give them a better opportunity to grow. A large part of the group is from Hickory. Pastor Eduardo and I met with Pastor Scott Howard at Hickory, Sandy Ridge to explore the possibility of meeting at the church. We had several conversations and met with the LBA at Sandy Ridge to answer questions they had about being a host church. They have approved to enter into the relationship with Casa de Dios (House of God).

• I have tried to assist and aid Pastor Minoso as he leads the Hispanic Ministry • Attended all the quarterly Hispanic Pastor Meetings • Meetings and conversations with potential church planters • Three meetings with The Timothy Initiative • Attended Accelerate Conference • Led E&CG Meeting • Several FLAMA meetings with Pastor Tony, Pastor Jose and Pastor Nestor • Triad Zone Hispanic Service • Served as Church Planting Assessor
