What questions should historians be asking about UK popular music in the 1970s? John Mullen, Université de Rouen Normandie, Equipe ERIAC One of the most important jobs of the historian is to find useful and interesting questions about the past, and the debate about the 1970s has partly been a question of deciding which questions are important. The questions, of course, are not neutral, which is why those numerous commentators for whom the key question is “Did the British people become ungovernable in the 1970s?” might do well to balance this interrogation with other equally non-neutral questions, such as, perhaps, “Did the British elites become unbearable in the 1970s?” My reflection shows, it is true, a preoccupation with “history from below”, but this is the approach most suited to the study of popular music history. -

Christopher Small's Concept of Musicking
CHRISTOPHER SMALL’S CONCEPT OF MUSICKING: TOWARD A THEORY OF CHORAL SINGING PEDAGOGY IN PRISON CONTEXTS By © Mary L. Cohen M.M.E., University of Kansas 2000 Submitted to the graduate degree program in Music Education and Music Therapy and the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Chairperson Committee members Date defended July 9, 2007 The Dissertation Committee for Mary L. Cohen certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: CHRISTOPHER SMALL’S CONCEPT OF MUSICKING: TOWARD A THEORY OF CHORAL SINGING PEDAGOGY IN PRISON CONTEXTS Committee: Chairperson Date approved: ii ABSTRACT The purpose of this investigation was to raise and examine questions relevant to building a theory of choral singing pedagogy for prison-based choirs with reference to Christopher Small’s (1927- ) concept of “musicking.” Historical-biographical method was employed to construct an account of Small’s life and work using published sources and personal interviews with Small. Philosophical inquiry was used to examine his published writing, the roots and logic of major propositions contributing to his mature concept of musicking, and published criticisms to date of Small’s philosophy. Thereafter, Small’s philosophy of musicking was investigated in terms of its explanatory power in building a theory of choral singing pedagogy in prison contexts. In that regard, Small’s concept of musicking was compared to major propositions articulated by traditional aesthetic philosophies of music, and contrasted with three contemporary North American philosophies of music education (Reimer, Jorgensen Elliott) with respect to the logical capacity of each philosophical framework to respond to two primary assumptions: (a) choral singing typically entails the articulation and communication of words (“the word factor”) and (b) choral singing evidences a union between musical agent and musical instrument (“the somatic factor”). -

It was formed in 1983, in response to a growing need among private music teachers for an examination system catering for a greater diversity of musical styles. In recognizing the vital role modern music plays, especially among the young, ANZCA set out to design its syllabuses to cater for both classical and modern streams. ANZCA hopes to stimulate and excite musicians by providing syllabuses that are at once refreshing and educational. All aspects of the syllabuses, including scales, aural tests, sight reading and improvisation, have been arranged in a logical sequential order, with due regard to the educational merit underlying each requirement. Modern and classical syllabuses are currently available for pianoforte, organ, guitar, singing, trumpet and flute, as well as contemporary syllabuses for keyboard, mandolin, bass, ukulele, drum kit, trombone, clarinet, saxophone, accordion, recorder, strings and theory of music. Group examinations are offered for practical examinations from Grades One to Four, in addition to the String Quartet (four levels) and Piano Duet (seven levels) syllabuses. -
ARLON Nagrywa Swój Drugi Studyjny Album We Współpracy Z Michałem
ARLON nagrywa swój drugi studyjny album we współpracy z Michałem Mierzejewskim i symfoniczną orkiestrą Sinfonietta Consonus! W nagraniach drugiego albumu Arlonu weźmie udział około 40 muzyków, w tym orkiestra Sinfonietta Consonus, chór i oczywiście pięciu muzyków zespołu Arlon. Orkiestra Michała Mierzejewskiego pojawi się w dwóch zorkiestrowanych przez niego utworach Arlonu. Pomysł współpracy z Michałem Mierzejewskim zrodził się w 2013 roku, chwilę po wydaniu pierwszej płyty Arlon „On the Edge”. Paweł Zwirn – perkusista Arlon, endorser firmy Palisso i Jacek Szott zainicjowali pierwsze spotkanie muzyków w Krakowie przy okazji koncertu Neal Morse Band i wtedy odbyły się wstępne rozmowy na temat przyszłych wspólnych nagrań. Pomysł dojrzewał w trakcie prac nad nowym materiałem i niebawem został sfinalizowany. Oprócz przygotowywania nowej płyty, Arlon szykuje trasę koncertową. Tak o współpracy z zespołem pisze sam Michał Mierzejewski: „Współpraca z zespołem Arlon to będzie pierwszy "kontakt" orkiestry Sinfonietta Consonus z polską grupą.
