GROWING Mauritia Flexuosa in PALM BEACH COUNTY
GROWING Mauritia flexuosa IN PALM BEACH COUNTY Submitted by Charlie Beck Mauritia flexuosa is a very large palm with deeply segmented palmate leaves and rounded petioles. In habitat, this dioecious palm grows 15 foot wide leaves on petioles 30 feet long. The stems can reach 80 feet tall. Its natural range is wet areas in Northern South America east of the Andes and also reaching into Trinidad. It usually grows in permanently swampy areas. This palm provides food and nesting sites for Macaws (See photo on back cover). Fish, turtles, tortoises, agoutis, peccares, deer, pacas, and iguanas also eat its fruit. I recently attended a meeting of the South Florida Palm Society and it was mentioned that Mauritia did not grow in South Florida. I knew the speaker was not aware of the fine specimens growing at Richard Moyroud’s Mesozoic Landscapes Nursery in Palm Beach County. The nursery is located near Hypoluxo Road west of Rt. 441 – not considered a warm location. I saw these palms planted at his nursery several years ago when I went out there to purchase some native plants. I heard reports that Richard’s Mauritia palms survived our record cold winter, so I called Richard to get a status report. He invited me to come out to the nursery to see for myself. He has specimens growing in the nursery and in a private 3 acre swamp garden located behind the Mauritia flexuosa planted in Richard nursery which is off limits to his customers. This was a rare Moyroud’s garden opportunity to have Richard lead me on a tour of his swamp garden. -

In this scenario, natural lignocellulosic fibers (NLFs) became an important alternative to replace synthetic fibers commonly used as composites reinforcement. In this regard, unknown NLFs such as the caranan fiber (Mauritiella armata) found in South American rain forests revealed promising properties for engineering applications. In many countries, regional divisions have been primarily based on cultural or linguistic pattems, and the greatest challenge has been 10 achieve balanced development for all ethnic groups. The available etbnic maps for Peru are based on language. They show spheres of influence for various languages (pesce 1969) but lack a quantitative basis and do not indicate the numerically pre- ponderant languages and cultures. They also do not distinguish between cultural groups that are not indigenous language speakers. This report, by using quantitative data of language and ethnicity as found in various censuses, will attempt to map the cultural regions of Peru. Language as a Cultural Indicator There are three advantages to using language as a point of departure in mapping and defining culture regions: (1) language is strongly implicated in the transmission of culture and is thus linked to many nonlinguistic cultural traits, such as folklore, religion, and music; (2) language frontiers between groups impede cultural transmission and many times coincide with other cultural boundaries, including agricultural and housing traits; (3) language is a cultural trait that is relatively stable and easy 10 determine through census information. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A taxonomic revision of the Neotropical palm genus Leopoldinia based on morphological data and morphometric methods was carried out. One hundred and sixteen herbarium specimens were scored for seven qualitative and 24 quantitative variables. Qualitative variables were divided into six characters and one trait. Using the Phylogenetic Species Concept, the six characters were used to recognize three species. These are widely distributed in the central Amazon region of Brazil and adjacent Venezuela and Colombia. Nomenclature, descriptions, illustrations, and distribution maps are provided for each taxon. Key words: Palmae, morphometrics, Neotropics, Rio Negro Introduction The small, Neotropical genus Leopoldinia Martius (1823–1837: 58) comprises just three species confined to the central Amazon region. So different is the morphology of the genus from related genera, especially the elaborate leaf sheaths and trilocular, triovulate gynoecium, that the genus has been placed in its own tribe of the Arecoideae, the Leopoldinieae (Dransfield et al. 2008). This tribe, along with the Areceae, Euterpeae, Geonomateae, Manicarieae and Pelagodoxeae, make up the ‘core arecoid clade’ (Dransfield et al. 2008), although relationships amongst these tribes are not well resolved (Baker et al. 2009, Baker et al. 2011). We propose a method for seed shape quantification based on the comparison of the bi-dimensional images of the seeds with geometric figures. J index is the percent of similarity of a seed image with a figure taken as a model. Models in shape quantification include geometrical figures (circle, ellipse, oval ::: ) and their derivatives, as well as other figures obtained as geometric representations of algebraic equations. The analysis is based on three sources: Published work, images available on the Internet, and seeds collected or stored in our collections. Some of the models here described are applied for the first time in seed morphology, like the superellipses, a group of bidimensional figures that represent well seed shape in species of the Calamoideae and Phoenix canariensis Hort. ex Chabaud.
