Degree awarded March 2013 ii © 2013 Thérèse Hurley iii DISSERTATION ABSTRACT Thérèse Hurley Doctor of Philosophy School of Music and Dance March 2013 Title: Jeanne d’Arc on the 1870s Musical Stage: Jules Barbier and Charles Gounod’s Melodrama and Auguste Mermet’s Opera The purpose of this study is to examine the presentation of Joan of Arc’s life in two lyric works, Jules Barbier and Charles Gounod’s Jeanne d’Arc (1873) and Auguste Mermet’s Jeanne d’Arc (1876), that premiered in Paris following the upheaval of the Franco-Prussian War and Paris Commune. Relying on Parisian journals of the day, I follow two trends: some critics called for a historically-informed presentation of Joan’s life and others appealed to retain certain supernatural elements, specifically the Fairy Tree and the Voices, of Joan’s story. In addition to these trends, I consider an article printed shortly before the premiere of Mermet’s opera and discuss the political and religious implications of the final scene (Charles VII Coronation in Reims or Joan’s execution in Rouen) in these two stage works. After an introductory chapter and a chapter tracing the geneses of the melodrama and the opera, the remaining chapters each deal specifically with one of the three above- mentioned lines of inquiry as they relate to Joan of Arc’s story. Chapter III discusses historical characters (Charles, duc d’Orléans, King René, and Agnès Sorel), historical music (minuet and Vexilla regis), and music believed to have been sung in the presence of iv Joan of Arc (Veni Creator Spiritus and Orate pro ea). Chapter IV addresses the continuing presence of legendary, supernatural elements—specifically the Fairy Tree and the Voices—and how these elements have changed in nineteenth-century stage works about Joan. In Chapter V, the difficulty of adapting Joan’s life on the stage is examined. A closer look reveals that differing views existed during the 1870s as to exactly what her mission entailed. The two works reflect the changing attitudes on this topic. Gómez Professor of History and Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies New York University Juan Latino’s first book is in effect a summons not only to meditate upon the person and his work, but to reconsider the birth of a new world order from a vantage point both unique and unexpected, to view the beginning of a global transformation so thoroughgoing in its effect that the world continues to wrestle with its implications, its overall direction yet determined by centuries-old centripetal forces. The challenge, therefore in seeing the world through the eyes of Juan Latino is to resist or somehow avoid the optic of the present, since we know what has transpired in the nearly five hundred year since the birth of Juan Latino, and that knowledge invariably affects, if not skews our understanding of the person and his times. Though we may not fully succeed, there is much to gain from paying disciplined attention to matters of periodization in the approximation of Juan Latino’s world, in the effort to achieve new vistas into the human condition. To understand Juan Latino, therefore, is to grapple with political, cultural, and social forces, global in nature yet still in their infancy, which created him. To grasp the significance of Juan Latino is to come to terms with contradiction and contingency, verity and surprise, ambiguity and clarity, conformity and exceptionality. In the end, the life and times of Juan Latino constitute a rare window into the dawn of modernity. Celebrated as “the first person of sub-Saharan African descent to publish a book of poems in a western language” (a claim sufficiently qualified as to survive sustained scrutiny), Juan Latino, as he came to be known, was once “Juan de Sessa,” the slave of a patrician family, who came to style himself as “Joannes Latīnūs,” often signing his name as “Magīster Latīnūs.”i The changing, shifting nomenclature is as revealing as it is obfuscating.

Gaston Leroux's 1911 novel, The Phantom of the Opera, has a considerable number of allusions, some of which are accessible to modern American audiences, like references to Romeo and Juilet. Many of the references, however, are very specific to the operatic world or to other somewhat obscure fields. Knowledge of these allusions would greatly enhance the experience of readers of the novel, and would also contribute to their ability to interpret it. Thus my thesis aims to be helpful to those who read The Phantom of the Opera by providing a set of notes, as it were, to explain the allusions, with an emphasis on the extended allusion of the Palais Garnier and the historical models for the heroine, Christine Daae. Notes on Translations At the time of this writing, three English translations are commercially available of The Phantom of the Opera.

    The reception of Herculanum in the contemporary press Gunther Braam How can the success of an opera in its own time be examined and studied? Quite simply, by working out the number of performances and the total amount of receipts generated, then by creating – and assess - ing – the most extensive dossier possible of the reviews which appeared in the contemporary press. herculanum : from playbill to box office With regard to the number of performances, the Journal de l’Opéra , today held in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, is fortunately at our dis - posal. Nevertheless, this needs to be analysed carefully, not overlooking the fact that the presence of an opera in the repertory might well result from reasons other than artistic ones, such as the departure of a direct- or, those connected with the singers entrusted with the leading roles, the destruction of scenery (often as a result of fires), for political reasons or for all kinds of other possibilities. Examples which could be mentioned include Tannhäuser by Wagner (1861), or – why not also – the less well- known La Nonne sanglante by Gounod (1854): far from being unsuccess - ful in terms of audience levels, these two operas were withdrawn after three performances for Tannhäuser , and eleven for La Nonne sanglant e; the average receipts for the two operas were respectively 8,890 and 6,140 francs (in comparison, the receipts for a performance of Les Huguenots 77 félicien david: herculanum in 1859, typically ranged between 6,000 and 7,000 francs).
