It warms my heart to hear Protestant feet marching once again. For it is the marching bands that are keeping open roads for Protestants to walk upon. Unionist politician Ian Paisley, at a unionist parade in Northern Ireland, 1986 Hey, normal life ends here folks, there is a marching band in your Starbucks, you’re not going to work today! Infernal Noise Brigade at Seattle anti-capitalist actions, 19991 What happens in social movements when people actually move, how does the mobile moment of activism contribute to mobilisation? Are they marching or dancing? How is the space of action, the street itself, altered, re-sounded? The employment of street music in the very specific context of political protest remains a curiously under- researched aspect of cultural politics in social movements.2 Many campaigns are still reliant on a public display, a demonstration of dissent, which takes place on the fetishised space of the street.

  • Play, Creativity, and the New Community Organizing
Play, Creativity, and the New Community Organizing Benjamin Shepard ABSTRACT. In recent years, a new breed of organizing has ignited campaigns for peace and justice. Many of these campaigns utilize inno- vative approaches to organizing diverse communities against a broad range of local and transnational targets. This new form of community or- ganizing emphasizes elements of play, creativity, joy, peer-based popu- lar education, cultural activism, and a healthy dose of experimentation. Themes of community building and renewal of democracy run through- out. A lively element of openness and learning from past mistakes while empirically testing new approaches propels the new organizing. A spirit of trial and error keeps it fresh. Much of the innovation in question finds its inspiration in the global justice movement’s spirit of joy, pleasure, and play. Multiple illustrations of creative play in relation to social work practice bear evidence to creative play as a forward-leaning ap- proach to social work practice.[Article copies available for a fee from The Haworth Document Delivery Service: 1-800-HAWORTH. Every city has its share of minor superheroes and civic-minded troublemakers, operating out of earshot of the mundane... HHuunnggrryy MMaarrcchh BBaanndd The Hungry March Band blows through the city on the shoulders of Chaos, careening among ecstatic melodies and torrential rhythms, leaving a unique residue of delight in its wake. A spitfire band of both Main Street and the side street, the HMB is likely to show up at any number of places: community demonstrations, dog parades, fancy weddings, jazz funerals, famous New York City clubs, Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Mediterranean islands, and the luckiest subway cars on the planet. The band was born in 1997 on the Brooklyn water- front, just in time for the Coney Island Mermaid Day Parade, and is now a booming ensemble of saxes, trombones, trumpets, sousaphones, and a full percussion section. They are often joined by the Pleasure Society, a troupe of baton twirlers, hula hoopers, and dancers, who blur the boundary between band and audience. Vigorously digesting music from wherever brass bands are heard — the Balkans, India, New Orleans, Latin America — and combining it with a knowledge of big band, free jazz, and punk rock, the Hungry March Band blares forth with one of the most original musical voices in NYC. “This feisty bunch gets down with some monster grooves, New Orleans-like funeral & marching music, foot-stomping cartoon-like hilarity, post-klez and other ethnic music mayhem. A complete blast.” —Bruce Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery, NYC, on “Critical Brass,” the band’s most recent CD www.hungrymarchband.com contact: Theresa Westerdahl, 917-676-8813 [email protected] photo credits: left column, right column bottom 4 © Grace T.

Jambalaya Brass Band is New York City's ultimate New Orleans party band. They are available for performances with as few as 5 pieces or as many as 9 pieces. Since 1998 they've been kickin' it hard with a flavor straight from the streets of New Orleans, paying their respects to the unique musical traditions of New Orleans incorporating a special blend of R & B, Funk, Gospel, Traditional Jazz, Zydeco, Latin, Hip Hop and Be-Bop. They will take you on a historical journey through the New Orleans brass band tradition. It is a joyous romp starting from the early beginnings with Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong and ending up with their own modern sounds influenced by the Rebirth, Dirty Dozen and New Birth brass bands. In addition to recording for the Warner Bros. film, Where The Wild Things Are, two commercials for Southern Comfort, Treme Life a documentary by James Demaria, and the Colours TV documentary film about Leah Daughtry (CEO of the National Democratic Convention 2008), they have played The 2nd Line Across the Brooklyn Bridge, A Jazz Funeral for Coney Island, Jazz Funeral for Allan Toussaint in NYC, Riverhead Mardi Gras Festival, Caesar's Atlantic City, The Hall @ MP, DBA New Orleans, Louisiana Music Factory, Harlem's Floridita, Radegast Hall and Biergarten, Treme Islip, WSME-FM Backyard BBQ, B.B. • Infernal Noise: the Soundtrack to Insurrection
Though the noise of breaking glass and concussion grenades were the sounds Infernal Noise: from Seattle most heavily regurgitated by the corporate media, there was a musical storm brewing in the thickest of tear gas which laughed in the face of the predictable the soundtrack to insurrection police stand-offs. Wearing Russian-style fuzzy black hats and militaristic green and by Jennifer Whitney black uniforms, flanked by a flag corps and rifle twirlers, a radical marching band called the Infernal Noise Brigade (INB) roamed the liberated streets. “You know your own music when you hear it one day. You fall into line and dance until you pay the piper.” – Bryon Gysin There have been marching bands like these at almost every global day of action since J18: the Committee for Full Enjoyment played at IMF/World Bank meetings in “We have to come up with a new marching pattern,” said Washington in 2000, the INB turned up again in 2000 in Prague, as did Rhythms of Grey. Everyone else in the band groaned. • How to Smash Everything
HOW TO SMASH EVERYTHING an anarchist sourcebook Singlethorn Collective @2007 dedicated to Jordan Matthew Feder 1980-2003 and Bradley Roland Will 1970-2006 brave friends who died in the fight, but whose hearts live on in the struggle. Warning! The real world of twenty-first century politics is quite violent and chaotic. Forget the sanitary images in the corporate media, politics mark the difference between life and death for thousands of people every day. We live in a world where rotting ideologies from the graveyard of history rise to walk among us thumping nineteenth century manifestos or twentieth century Mein Kampfs, while soulless corporations and authoritarian religious terrorists – at the head of state or not – plague humanity. Some people may find the shattering of deeply held assumptions within their own hearts, and the sharing of rebellious ideas, passions, tactics, stories and skills, as inappropriately or too abruptly life- altering. Note that none of us within the anarchist movement condone nor encourage racism, sexism, homophobia, exploitation, oppression, militarism, capitalism, greed, religious superstition and zealotry, ignorance, bigotry, authoritarianism, reformism, statism, conservativism, liberalism, neo-conservatism, neo-liberalism, fascism, neo-fascism, or violence against innocents. Political discretion is advised. -- evl, editor.
