    Play, Creativity, and the New Community Organizing Benjamin Shepard ABSTRACT. In recent years, a new breed of organizing has ignited campaigns for peace and justice. Many of these campaigns utilize inno- vative approaches to organizing diverse communities against a broad range of local and transnational targets. This new form of community or- ganizing emphasizes elements of play, creativity, joy, peer-based popu- lar education, cultural activism, and a healthy dose of experimentation. Themes of community building and renewal of democracy run through- out. A lively element of openness and learning from past mistakes while empirically testing new approaches propels the new organizing. A spirit of trial and error keeps it fresh. HHuunnggrryy MMaarrcchh BBaanndd The Hungry March Band blows through the city on the shoulders of Chaos, careening among ecstatic melodies and torrential rhythms, leaving a unique residue of delight in its wake. A spitfire band of both Main Street and the side street, the HMB is likely to show up at any number of places: community demonstrations, dog parades, fancy weddings, jazz funerals, famous New York City clubs, Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Mediterranean islands, and the luckiest subway cars on the planet. The band was born in 1997 on the Brooklyn water- front, just in time for the Coney Island Mermaid Day Parade, and is now a booming ensemble of saxes, trombones, trumpets, sousaphones, and a full percussion section. They are often joined by the Pleasure Society, a troupe of baton twirlers, hula hoopers, and dancers, who blur the boundary between band and audience.
