Cyborgs are human-machine hybrids with or- ganic and mechatronic body parts that can be implanted or worn. The transition into and out of experiencing additional body parts is not fully understood. Our goal is to draw from performing arts techniques in order to help decrease the cognitive load associated with becoming and unbecom- ing a cyborg. The art he diagnosed, variously dubbed a “post-formalist” or “sys - tems [a]esthetic”—a “Cyborg Art” of “unobjects”—emerged, first and foremost, as a matter of this new temporal articulation. Trained as an engineer, Burnham studied sculpture at Yale before seeking success as a light artist, fabricating kinetic con - structions from incandescents, plastics, and metal. Media art has existed in Russia for more than twenty years and female artists were the core developers of media art in St. Petersburg. Tak- ing the CYLAND media art laboratory as its vantage point, this interview with five artists aims to give an account of the history, key works, exhibitions and ideas in St. Petersburg media art. The artists participating in this interview are Anna Frants, Ludmila Belova, Alexandra Dementieva, Victoria Ilyushkina and Elena Gubanova. Most of the characters in the texts I examine wish to perpetuate the boundaries that contain them in a desperate search for stability. Only a few individuals manage to move beyond the boundaries created by multinational corporations that use technology, drugs or religion for their own benefit. This thesis will provide a definition of cyberpunk and explore its development from science fiction and postmodern writing. The influence of postmodern thinking on cyberpunk literature can be seen in its move from stability to fluidity, and in its insistence on the impossibility of creating fixed boundaries. Cyberpunk does not see the future of humanity as stable, and argues that it will be necessary for humanity to move beyond the boundaries that contain it.

I will also address the role of the art world and its institutions in establishing their mutual relationships. The rise of avant-garde tendencies, which marked the beginning of the 20th cen- tury, profoundly transformed traditional artistic orders. The most radical changes triggered by avant-garde movements challenged the entire aesthetic system which was grounded on an explicitly defined artist-work-viewer configuration and integ- rated by equally precisely described creative and receptive processes. Avant-garde revolutions questioned this system as a whole (disturbing and dismantling its in- ner relations) as well as its individual components (problematizing and under- mining all of its elements). Within avant-garde practices, the work as an original product of an artist’s own effort was replaced by a ready-made object of his/her choice (as in Marcel Duchamp’s readymades), a creation of nature (as in Surrealists’ l’objet trouvé), or an artefact commissioned to be made by others (as in Laszlo Moholy-Nagy’s telephone paintings).

    ARTHI 5652 ABSTRACT BODIES IN MODERN SCULPTURE Professor David Getsy Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism School of the Art Institute of Chicago Barbara in Hepworth Spring 2011 Graduate Seminar Tuesdays 1-4pm; MC 816 e-mail:[email protected] Vogu e office: MC 710 / office hours by appointment 19521 Oct Course description In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, sculptors and critics struggled to conceive of sculpture beyond the statue and beyond resemblance. The emergence of abstract options in sculpture, however, was hard won. Viewers, critics, and artists wrestled with the relations and differences between sculptural images, human bodies, and everyday objects. The less statues looked like human figures, the more the question of how to determine the sculptural figure’s sex and gender arose. We will examine the fate of the figure in modern sculpture, exploring the ways in which sculptors and critics faced these new sculptural bodies. Basing our discussions in recent texts on the history and theory of sculpture as well as theoretical approaches to transgender bodies and sexual difference, the seminar will offer in-depth analyses of artists such as Rodin, Brancusi, Hepworth, Smith, and Minimalism. Course structure This is a reading-intensive, discussion-based seminar. Each three-hour session will focus on presentations and discussions of assigned texts. Students will be evaluated on the basis of their preparation, attendance, critical engagement with course themes, and research projects. Students are expected to undertake substantial independent research for course presentations and the final paper. The resources of the Ryerson and Flaxman Libraries should be consulted regularly.
