WING-FOLDING MECHANISM OF THE GRUMMAN WILDCAT An American Society of Mechanical Engineers Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark DESIGNATION CEREMONY AT THE KALAMAZOO AVIATION HISTORY MUSEUM KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN May 15, 2006 A Mechanical Engineering Landmark The innovative wing folding mechanism (STO-Wing), developed by Leroy Grumman in early 1941 and first applied to the XF4F-4 Wildcat, manufactured by the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, is designated an ASME Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark. (See Plaque text on page 6) Grumman People Three friends were the principal founders of the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation (Now known as Northrop Grumman Corporation), in January 1930, in a garage in Baldwin, Long Island, New York. (See photo of Leon Swirbul, William Schwendler, and Leroy Grumman on page 7) Leroy Randle (Roy) Grumman (1895-1982) earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Cornell University in 1916. He then joined the U. S. Navy and earned his pilot’s license in 1918. He was later the Managing Director of Loening Engineering Corporation, but when Loening merged with Keystone Aircraft Corporation, he and two of his friends left Loening and started their own firm — Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation. William T. Schwendler (1904-1978) earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from New York University in 1924. He was reluctant to leave Long Island, so he chose to join Grumman and Swirbul in forming the new company. Leon A. (Jake) Swirbul (1898-1960) studied two years at Cornell University but then left to join the U.S. Marine Corps. Instrumental in the founding and early growth of Grumman, he soon became its president.

  • Celebrating the Centennial of Naval Aviation in 1/72 Scale
Celebrating the Centennial of Naval Aviation in 1/72 Scale 2010 USN/USMC/USCG 1/72 Aircraft Kit Survey J. Michael McMurtrey IPMS-USA 1746 Carrollton, TX [email protected] As 2011 marks the centennial of U.S. naval aviation, aircraft modelers might be interested in this list of US naval aircraft — including those of the Marines and Coast Guard, as well as captured enemy aircraft tested by the US Navy — which are available as 1/72 scale kits. Why 1/72? There are far more kits of naval aircraft available in this scale than any other. Plus, it’s my favorite, in spite of advancing age and weakening eyes. This is an updated version of an article I prepared for the 75th Anniversary of US naval aviation and which was published in a 1986 issue of the old IPMS-USA Update. It’s amazing to compare the two and realize what developments have occurred, both in naval aeronautical technology and the scale modeling hobby, but especially the latter. My 1986 list included 168 specific aircraft types available in kit form from thirty- three manufacturers — some injected, some vacuum-formed — and only three conversion kits and no resin kits. Many of these names (Classic Plane, Contrails, Eagle’s Talon, Esci, Ertl, Formaplane, Frog, Griffin, Hawk, Matchbox, Monogram, Rareplane, Veeday, Victor 66) are no longer with us or have been absorbed by others. This update lists 345 aircraft types (including the original 168) from 192 different companies (including the original 33), many of which, especially the producers of resin kits, were not in existence in 1986, and some of which were unknown to me at the time.

The material has been compiled from a multitude of sources the first of which is my research in the Danish National and Military archives, the second is material from the archives of Flyvevåbnet with which I had a fruitful cooperation in the years 1966 to 1980 and the third are the now (fortunately) many books and magasines as well as the Internet which contains information about Danish military aircraft. The pictures in Volume 1 and Volume 2-the photo album- have mainly been selected from the viewpoint of typicality and rarety and whereever possible pictures of operational aircraft in colour has been chosen. Most of the b/w picures in some way originate from the FLV historical archives, some were originally discovered there by me, whereas others have surfaced later.

  • Blue Angels History at the End of World War II, the Chief of Naval
Blue Angels History At the end of World War II, the Chief of Naval Operations, Chester W. Nimitz, ordered the formation of a flight demonstration team to keep the public interested in Naval Aviation. The Blue Angels performed their first flight demonstration less than a year later in June 1946 at their home base, Naval Air Station (NAS) Jacksonville, Florida. LCDR Roy “Butch” Voris led the team, flying the Grumman F6F Hellcat. Two months later, on August 25, 1946, the Blue Angels transitioned to the Grumman F8F Bearcat. The 1947 team, led by LCDR Robert Clarke, introduced the now-famous “Diamond Formation.” By the end of the 1940s, the Blue Angels were flying their first jet aircraft, the Grumman F9F-2 Panther. In response to the demands placed on Naval Aviation in the Korean Conflict, the team reported to the aircraft carrier USS Princeton as the nucleus of Fighter Squadron 191 (VF-191), “Satan’s Kittens,” in 1950. The team reorganized the next year and reported to NAS Corpus Christi, Texas, where they began flying the newer and faster version of the Panther, the F9F-5. The Blue Angels remained in Corpus Christi until the winter of 1954 when they relocated to their present home base at NAS Pensacola, Florida. Here they progressed to the swept wing Grumman F9F-8 Cougar. The ensuing 20 years saw the Blue Angels transition to two more aircraft, the Grumman F11F-1 Tiger (1957) and the McDonnell Douglas F-4J Phantom II (1969). In December 1974, the Navy Flight Demonstration Team began flying the McDonnell Douglas A-4F Skyhawk II and was reorganized into the Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron.
