To help you understand the dedication and commitment that is required of the NCTA Ranch Horse Team, please be sure to read the following information and keep this document handy. The book, Cow- boy Ethics, is on reserve in the Learning Resource Center. Ride Up, is also available in the Coach’s of- fice. We will conduct ourselves and this team on the spirit set forth in these books.

Membership: NCTA belongs to the Stock Horse of Texas Association, which is a Texas based, nationally recognized organization that sponsors competition at the collegiate level. We also show in non–SHTX shows. Full- time students of NCTA may become members through the college & the Ranch Horse Team. A grade point average of 2.5 must be maintained in order to practice or compete. The team members must also sign up for Ranch Horse Team I or II in each semester in which they plan to ride. The course “Equine Safety” is required for first year students and second year students who have never had Equine Safety. Dues will be required to SHTX @ $30.00 and available to CoWN @$25.00 for one year from the date of purchase.

Team Structure: The 2020-2021 NCTA Ranch Horse Team will not have the Varsity, JV, RH structure this year. The Coach will make the decision as to which Team members travel and compete. This decision will be based on efforts by the member, current skill level, dedication of member, individual fundraising efforts as well as space in vehicles. While this does not guarantee anyone member ‘a spot on the trailer,’ it does offer an equal opportunity for each and every team member to travel and compete. The Coach will take the students that truly want to compete, are willing to put forth the necessary effort, and follow through with action all with a positive and supportive attitude.

Team Requirements: Team members will be required to attend all designated practices. The Coach must be notified in ad- vance of any missed practices, meetings, or required clinics/events. Students using NCTA horses must care for NCTA owned practice horses and maintain cleanliness of pens, stalls and the horse barn. All members will help keep the LTC arena, bleachers, halls, rest rooms, classrooms being used, stalls, pens, and immediate outdoor area neat and clean as well. Team members will be required to attend special events that are sponsored by the team. Students using NCTA horses will be expected to help with any chores associated with practice horse care such as feeding, presenting horses for farrier work, picking up hay, fencing, painting, grooming, etc. Students will participate in mandatory barn “orientation and safe- ty” with the instructor.

Current entry fees per Ranch Horse class are approximately $110.00 to $200.00 for all four classes (Ranch Pleasure, Trail, , and Working Cow) in each show, last year’s National Finals was $260- 400. All SHTX shows have a clinic before the show and now range from $40 to $100 to ride in them with no charge to audit. The team will participate in 7-8 shows as a team throughout the year. Students may show in other shows if they desire. Nationals would be additional for those who qualify.

Members will be required to attend special clinics, training sessions or competitions sponsored by NCTA. We often provide reduced rates for our students (example: $25 to ride with Sherman Tegtmeier offered once per semester).

A letter of commitment will be signed and on file. Education: School work comes first. Students will have study sessions and will complete homework while traveling to and from competitions. We want you to succeed, see the Coach for help with your school work. In an effort to assist Team members with class, all members will be required to sit in the front 2 rows in class and ATTEND CLASS. Attendance in other classes WILL be checked regularly. Grade checks will also be required of all Team members throughout the semester.

Alcohol and Tobacco: There will be a ZERO tolerance policy for alcohol and tobacco. Students will sign and adhere to the team agreement. This means whether student is legal age or not.

Physical and Mental Training: Team members are required to workout, at a minimum, three times per week. Specific programs or rou- tines will be by choice but must be approved by the coach. The goal is to choose activities that will de- velop each member in the areas specific to them that will support core strength, stamina, and flexibility. All team members will be required to record their activities as well as document progress. A chart will be provided to each member for recording such. **A personal development resource will be required of each student (“I Dare You”, which will be pro- vided) and will be monitored throughout the semester.

The “final” word: Questions about horses, practices, equipment or any other team-related issues will be handled by Jo H. (Coach), health issues will be in consultation with Dr. Steve Krull.

The Facilities and Horses: The barn, arena, practice equipment, tack, and horses are the property of NCTA. They are used by per- mission only. Any misuse or abuse of property or horses will result in dismissal from the Ranch Horse Team. Any misuse or abuse of an individual member’s horse by the member will result in dismissal from the Ranch Horse Team. Worming is highly recommended for the individual member’s horses. As a bio- security issue and safety issue for all horses coming on campus whether student horses or outside riding horses, vaccinations are mandatory, as well as a negative coggins test before any horse may be ridden anywhere on the NCTA campus. Required vaccinations are: Eastern and Western Equine Encephalomy- elitis, Tetanus, Influenza, Rhinoneumonitis (5-Way), and Rabies. In addition, horses utilized on the Ranch Horse Team are highly encouraged to have been vaccinated for Strangles and boostered every 3 months for Flu & Rhino (Calvenza). Any illness or unsoundness in NCTA horses must be reported to Jo H. and a veterinarian will be consulted. Team members using NCTA horses will have horse barn and horse care responsibilities.

Travel: We will travel as much as possible together. Departure times are non-negotiable. Tardiness will not be tolerated. It is rude and disrespectful to be late to those who made it on time. If you are late, you will be left. Typically, rooms are reserved together in a block and will be shared, 4 students to a room mini- mum. Anything less than your best behavior, will not be tolerated. We travel by Cowboy Ethics/Ride Up principles as well. We are ambassadors of NCTA, loud, rude, disrespectful, or obscene behav- ior will result in dismissal from the team, and your mother will have to come get you. NO ALCHOHOL on school sponsored events even if you are legal age. Traveling horses will have to have negative Cog- gins and health certificates. This is one reason why vaccinations are now mandatory; horses will be mixed with other horses from all over the country.

Shared expenses such as fuel, hotels, etc. must be paid by individual members. NCTA does not pay all expenses. Estimated expenses must be paid 2-3 weeks before a show. Once payments are made, there are no refunds. Over or under payments will be taken care of within a week after a show, or student will not be allowed to participate. Coolers will be provided for any members wanting to take food.

Fundraising: Every member of the Ranch Horse Team will be required to acquire funding to assist the team in paying for expenses. Each Team member will be required to raise $650 by year’s end ($325 by December, $325 by April). If we raise the needed ~$35,000 required to compete and host scheduled events, then students will not have to pay for expenses out of pocket. The Animal Science/Ag Ed Department currently pays for fuel in the school truck (which is not always available – we share it with the Team). A fund- raising orientation will be scheduled and the Team will participate in an associated workshop to support fundraising efforts. Students that raise the $650 will be required to pay for half of their entries and all hotel expenses. If a student raises above that mark, the funds above $650 can be put towards paying for that student’s half of expenses.

Team Spirit: We are a team and will work together at all times for the success of each individual as well as our team. There will be zero tolerance of discourtesy to any team member, competitor, coach, judge, other official, or any animal, anytime, but especially when we travel. RIDE FOR THE BRAND!

Winning Attitude: While the main focus of the Ranch Horse Team will be to develop and perfect , han- dling, training, and riding skills, we will always strive for friendly and sportsmanlike competitive recog- nition for our school and team.

History

The history of NCTA reaches back to the early 1900’s and offers a rich background in agri- cultural education. The NCTA Ranch Horse Team’s beginnings came along more recently with the building of the Everett Stencel Livestock Teaching Center (fondly referred to as the “LTC”) in 2001. This heated indoor arena measuring 112’x250’ with an additional 20’ of bleachers capable of seating 450 spectators coupled with an equine barn (finished in 2002) and over 500 acres of attached crop and rangeland laboratories all provided for the for- mation of the NCTA Equestrian Team as well as a formal academic Equine Industry Man- agement Option within the Agriculture Production Systems Division.

The present day NCTA Ranch Horse Team was formed by the original Equestrian Team due to coach and student interest as well as support from other colleges. Judy Bowmaster- Cole was the initial coach and advisor of the Equestrian Team. Judy and her husband Roy (the current NCTA Farm Manager) were looking for an avenue for students who were in- terested in improving their horsemanship skills and who wanted to work cattle.

In early 2008 while at a show, Roy and Judy noticed the Texas Tech team coach wearing a jacket with a Ranch Horse Team logo on it. This sparked a conversation with the late Kris Wilson, the Texas Tech Ranch Horse Team Coach at that time (most recently managed the Silver Ranch in NM). Kris offered Roy and NCTA the opportunity to investigate the new idea of a ranch horse team by inviting us to Amarillo, TX to compete at an upcoming show. The invitation included horses for our students to compete on while there! Two students took the opportunity and one finished 9th in the All-Around in her division.

Upon return to Curtis, the NCTA Ranch Horse Team was formed and operated within the Equestrian Team for the remainder of that year. In 2009, the official NCTA Ranch Horse Team was formed and separated from the Equestrian Team. In 2010, the ASHA Collegiate Program went National and with it many other colleges formed teams accordingly, includ- ing CSU, LCCC, and NJC. The NCTA Ranch Horse Team is proud to be a charter member of the ASHA (2010-2011). It all started with 8 teams and today there are more than 20 col- leges involved! To this day, we are still the only Ranch Horse Team in the state of Nebras- ka.

In the first few years after forming the Team, students practiced and competed in only the spring semester. A trip to the Blackhills Stock Show was added early on as a kickoff to the spring. The Team had little to no financial support from the college nor sponsors. In 2011, the Team was offered a chance to apply for Student Union Resource Funds (SURF) through NCTA and were awarded enough money to purchase a mechanical cow! Such a tool afforded the Team a valuable practice tool still utilized to this day!

History

In 2013, Roy and Judy handed the reins to Joanna Hergenreder, Equine Specialist hired as an Assistant Professor in 2012. Shortly thereafter, it was decided to once again combine the Ranch Horse Team with the Equestrian Team and focus on stock-horse competition. This decision provided for a cooperation of assets, funds, and efforts that best fit our students at NCTA. The Team officially then became the NCTA Ranch Horse Team that is in operation today, including many opportunities offered by the old Equestrian Team and many new opportunities offered by the stock-horse focus.

In the past five-plus years, the Team has boasted an average of 20 members with 7+ mem- bers regularly competing! In the past five years, the Team has experienced tremendous growth, in and outside of the arena. We hosted our first ASHA/CoWN sanctioned show in March of 2015 which brought an astounding 82 entries! The next year, the same show grew by 40+ entries! We also increased our involvement in both ASHA and CoWN as we trav- eled to multiple shows in both the fall and spring semesters. The current coach, Joanna Hergenreder, held a position on the ASHA Board of Directors , ASHA Collegiate Commit- tee, served as a NE representative on the CoWN Board of Directors, and most recently served as the CoWN Vice President.

In 2017, the NCTA Ranch Horse Team regularly traveled with 12+ members, a doubled growth from previous years. We also experienced a re-direction in affiliation as we were offered an opportunity to sanction with Stock Horse of Texas (SHTX), the oldest versatile stock horse association in the country and a Strategic Marketing Alliance partner with the Association We held our first SHTX/CoWN sanctioned show in April 2017 which introduced people to SHTX and brought people from multiple states, in- cluding New Mexico.

Excitedly, we were most recently invited for inclusion in the Slidin Daze Stock Horse Se- ries (2018) and with that we decided to focus and affiliate with AQHA and the WCHA in offering a full slate of Versatility Ranch Horse classes at our 4th Annual Punchy In Pink Spring Round Up! We continue to develop this popular event!

The NCTA Ranch Horse Team has built a reputation for being excellent sportsmen, strong competitors, exceptional horsemen, and the first ones to offer assistance at a show. We pride ourselves for setting a positive example and work to “be the change we want to see in the world!”

We look forward to what the future holds and are excited to include our sponsors and communities on our journey towards becoming better horsemen and ultimately, better humans!
