    Opening Statement: Fairbanks Field Hearing Chairman Lisa Murkowski March 28, 2016 Good afternoon, everyone, and Happy Seward’s Day. I am delighted to call this Field Hearing to order in our Golden Heart city of Fairbanks. I want to start by thanking the Pipeline Training Center for hosting us. And I want to welcome our witnesses and all who have joined us for this important discussion about resource development in Alaska. As many of you likely know, it was gold mining that ultimately determined the location of Fairbanks. Captain Barnette’s riverboat ran out of draft on the Chena, and fate determined where his mining supply business was to be located. And while Barnette was too late and too far away to profit from the Klondike gold rush, he helped create the Fairbanks gold rush. Today, Fort Knox and Pogo, world-class gold mines north and south of the city, continue the proud tradition that give meaning to Fairbanks’ motto. This region – like so much of our state – is blessed with vast natural resources that we can use to gain prosperity and fulfill the promises of our statehood. Today is Seward’s Day, we can laugh about Seward’s Ice Box or Seward’s Folly, but not even Seward could conceive of the resource wealth the U.S. purchased from Russia. Alaska has what virtually no one else has: tens of billions of barrels of oil, hundreds of trillions of cubic feet of natural gas, a massive supply of coal, and countless deposits of hardrock minerals. Of course renewable resources beyond imagination.

Few of these tangible remnants of the past have managed to survive the ravages of time, preserved in libraries and special collections. This thesis analyzes the over 22,000-item rare book collection of the Elmer E. Rasmuson Library at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, the largest collection of rare books in the State of Alaska and one of the largest polar regions collections in the world. Content, chronology, authorship, design, and relevance to northern and polar history were a few of the criteria used to evaluate the collection. Twenty items of particular value to the study of Alaskan history were selected and studied in depth.

With the pillars of Scouting as the foundation, we offer unparalleled outdoor experiences that will challenge and build the leaders of tomorrow, while promoting teamwork and creating memories that last a lifetime. NLHA Trek Structure Crew All participants belong to a crew consisting of at least two adult leaders, a Senior Patrol Leader, and a majority of youth participants. A Northern Lights High Adventure Trek Leader accompanies all crews. Crew maximum is 12 participants including adult leaders, and all youth must be 14+ years old at the time of the trek. Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) or President Scouting is specifically designed to develop youth leadership. A well-qualified Scout or Venturer should be selected as the SPL or President early in the planning of each Northern Lights High Adventure Expedition. The SPL or President is responsible for leading the pace of travel during the day and establishing the crew duty roster for camp chores. NLHA Trek Leader The Trek Leader is a highly trained, adult Northern Lights High Adventure staff member who serves as a teacher and resource for your Crew.     LA CULTURA ITALIANA FELICE PEDRONI (FELIX PEDRO) 1858-1910 This month’s essay deals with a slightly different subject than we have discussed before. Thanks to Cenacolista Ron Fenolio’s recommendation, I wish to look at the life of an Italian immigrant whose discovery of gold in the then-remote Tanana River valley of interior Alaska sparked the 1902 Fairbanks gold rush, which resulted in the development of Alaska’s largest gold district, frequently referred to by chroniclers of the day as “America’s Klondike.” Thus, he played an im- portant role in the founding of Fairbanks, Alaska. FELICE PEDRONI (known to most Americans as Felix Pedro) was born on April 16, 1858. (So, this month he would have turned 161 years old). He was born into a family of subsistence farmers in the small village of Trignano, which was administrated by Fanano, a town and commune located in the province of Mode- na in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region. He was the youngest of six boys in his family. Very little is known about his early life growing up. What we do know is that the dearth of information suggests that his early life was not much out of the ordinary for his time and social class. Pedroni left home in 1881 following the death of his father, and arrived in New York City where he quickly assumed the name “Felix Pedro.” Pedroni traveled across the North American continent, working in New York City, Ohio, Washington State, as well as British Columbia and Yukon Territory in Canada. On his 20-year westward trek, he also worked in the silver mines of Colorado and the coal mines of Utah.

In the spring of 1903, Charles Hinckley arrived from Nome with his family and three of his best cows. By the end of that first summer, he had built a log barn at this site. In 1927, he sold the operation to his brother-in-law, Charles Creamer, for $6,000. Creamer and his wife, Annie, ran the farm until 1965. In 1969, the State of Alaska purchased the fields and named the area Creamer’s Field State Wildlife Refuge; in 1981 it purchased the buildings. During each spring and fall, bird watchers enjoy spotting the many migrating waterfowl - Canada geese, sandhill cranes, trumpeter swans and many species of ducks - that use the spot as a resting point on their journey. Several miles of nature paths wind through the woods, starting near the farmhouse, providing an opportunity to experience the plant and animal life of Interior Alaska. Dog mushers and cross country skiers enjoy the area during the winter months. The Fairbanks office of the Alaska Department of Fish & Game is west of the College Road pullout. Tanana Valley Fairgrounds & Farmer’s Market Fairbanksans have been celebrating their northern lifestyle with annual fairs in various locations since 1904. The Tanana Valley Fair finally found a permanent home in 1952 at the fairgrounds on College Road. Since that time the fairgrounds have continued to grow and now sport a fine horse show and rodeo arena.
