Fort Duchesne From: Utah Place Names
Fort Duchesne from: Utah Place Names FORT DUCHESNE* (Uintah County) was near the Uinta River, one mile south of US-40. The site was originally a fur-trading post prior to 1841. In August 1861, the fort was established under the Lincoln presidency. On August 20, 1886, two troops of black men from the Ninth Cavalry, under Major F. W. Benteen, moved in. They served at the fort for twelve years. Because of their dark curly hair, the Indians called the troops buffalo soldiers. The fort was abandoned in 1912, then re-established as the headquarters for the Uintah Reservation. See Duchesne River below for name source. >S23,T2S,R1E,USM; 4,988' (1,520m). DUCHESNE RIVER (Duchesne County, Uintah County) originates at the southwestern section of the Uinta Mountains at the foot of Mount Agassiz. The river drains south southeast through Duchesne* into the Green River. Prior to 1875 the present Duchesne River was known as the Uinta River. As one of the more historic and prominent rivers of Utah, there has been much confusion in past writings as to the river's name history and relative relationships with the mouths of the nearby White and Uinta rivers. -

PREFACE In 1957 the American Gilsonite Company opened a revolu tionary refinery near Grand Junction, Colorado, which had cost them $16,000,000 to build, and began reducing the gilsonite--a solid hydrocarbon--to high-grade gasoline and pure carbon-coke at the rate of about 700 tons per day. Just as incredible is the fact that gilsonite was and is conveyed from Bonanza, Utah, across the precipitous Book Cliffs to the refinery through a pipeline. The opening of this magnificent plant was eighty-eight years removed from the year 1869 when the blacksmith of the Whiterocks Indian Agency attempted to b u m gilsonite as coal in his forge with rather dreadful results. During the interval so many human events occurred in relation to gilsonite--a rare bitumen closely related to grahamite and glance pitch--that it was felt to be an adequate and deserving topic for thorough historical treatment. -

A HISTORY OF 'Beaver County Martha Sonntag Bradley UTAH CENTENNIAL COUNTY HISTORY SERIES A HISTORY OF 'Beaver County Martha Sonntag Bradley The settlement of Beaver County began in February 1856 when fifteen families from Parowan moved by wagon thirty miles north to Beaver Valley. The county was created by the Utah legislature on 31 January 1856, a week before the Parowan group set out to make their new home. However, centuries before, prehistoric peoples lived in the area, obtaining obsidian for arrow and spear points from the Mineral Mountains. Later, the area became home to Paiute Indians. Franciscan Friars Dominguez and Escalante passed through the area in October 1776. The Mormon settlement of Beaver devel oped at the foot of the Tushar Mountains. In 1859 the community of Minersville was es tablished, and residents farmed, raised live stock, and mined the lead deposits there. In the last quarter of the nineteenth century the Mineral Mountains and other locations in the county saw extensive mining develop ment, particularly in the towns of Frisco and Newhouse. Mining activities were given a boost with the completion of the Utah South ern Railroad to Milford in 1880. The birth place of both famous western outlaw Butch Cassidy and inventor of television Philo T. Farnsworth, Beaver County is rich in history, historic buildings, and mineral treasures. UINTA-PICEANCE BASIN PROVINCE (020) By Charles W. Spencer INTRODUCTION This province trends west-east, extending from the thrust belt in north-central Utah, on the west, to the southern Park Range and Sawatch Uplift in northwestern Colorado on the east. The northern boundary is defined roughly by the Uinta Mountain Uplift, and the southern boundary is located along a line north of the axis of the Uncompahgre Uplift. The province covers an area of about 40,000 sq mi and encompasses the Uinta, Piceance, and Eagle Basins. Sedimentary rocks in the basin range in age from Cambrian to Tertiary. Spencer and Wilson (1988) provided a summary of the stratigraphy and petroleum geology of the province. The Uinta and Piceance Basins were formed mainly in Tertiary time. The Eagle Basin is a structural feature east of the Piceance Basin and coincides in part with the Pennsylvanian-age Eagle Evaporite Basin, although the present-day Eagle Basin is much smaller than the paleodepositional basin. Numerous oil and gas fields have been discovered in the Uinta and Piceance basins; however, there have been no fields discovered in the Eagle structural basin. The lack of exploration success in the Eagle Basin is attributed to very thermal maturity levels in source rocks (Johnson and Nuccio, 1993) and the generally poor quality of reservoirs, and although gas might be present, the expected volume is small. The Uinta Basin of Utah is about 120 mi long and is bounded on the west by the thrust belt and on the east by the Douglas Creek Arch. It is nearly 100 mi wide and bounded on the north side by the Uinta Mountains Uplift.
