Green, green, green Today is the second Sunday after Pentecost. On Pentecost, we celebrate the arrival of the Holy Spirit - the helper Jesus promised would be with the disciples as they began teaching and preaching God’s messages.
The color for Pentecost is red. Last Sunday, Trinity Sunday, we celebrated the wonder and mystery of God who is 3 parts in one (God the Parent, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit). The color for Trinity Sunday is white.
Today, we observe the beginning of “Ordinary Time.” Even though we call this time “ordinary,” very special work happens in ordinary times. The color for Ordinary Time is green.
As you watch today’s worship service, write down some things you see in the church that are green:

Where in the Word is the Word? Our scripture readings today are both from the New Testament: Romans 5:1-8 and Psalm 100.
WAIT! Why isn’t someone reading Psalm 100? I thought that was one of the scripture readings today!
Psalms are poems, prayers, and songs and today, our choir will sing Psalm 100, so you will hear it sung instead of hearing it read.
Can you find these bible passages in your bible? If you don’t know what all the words and numbers mean, use this as your guide:

Lamentations - or “J’s Lament” Have you ever sung “The Holy Books” song with Mr. D? It starts out:
These are the Holy Books Tell me their names and I’ll take a second look. This is God’s Holy Word, Tell God’s message ’til all have heard.
One of the Old Testament Books we sing about is “J’s Lament.” Try looking for that in your bible. I bet you won’t find it! “J’s Lament’” is actually a way of remembering the OT book of Lamentations. Some people think the prophet Jeremiah wrote these songs, but his name isn’t mentioned in the book, so we don’t know for sure. That’s where “J’s Lament” comes from - Jeremiah’s lamentations. The Call to Worship today is based on Lamentations 3:22-24. We don’t read from the book of Lamentations that often, so you may not know much about it.
A “lament” is a sad saying or a sad song. This bible book is full of songs that express deep sadness. God’s people cried because their city and country were destroyed and they were taken from their homes. They cried because they were living in a far away land.

Do you know what an acrostic is? It’s when the first letters of each line of a story or poem or song spell-out or mean something. Each line of the Lamentations poems in chapters 1 - 4 starts with a different letter of the Hebrew alphabet.
Can you write an ACROSTIC song or poem or prayer using our alphabet, starting with a new letter on each line?
