    Political Change and Scottish Nationalism in Dundee 1973-2012 Thomas A W Stewart PhD Thesis University of Edinburgh 2019 Abstract Prior to the 2014 independence referendum, the Scottish National Party’s strongest bastions of support were in rural areas. The sole exception was Dundee, where it has consistently enjoyed levels of support well ahead of the national average, first replacing the Conservatives as the city’s second party in the 1970s before overcoming Labour to become its leading force in the 2000s. Through this period it achieved Westminster representation between 1974 and 1987, and again since 2005, and had won both of its Scottish Parliamentary seats by 2007. This performance has been completely unmatched in any of the country’s other cities. Using a mixture of archival research, oral history interviews, the local press and memoires, this thesis seeks to explain the party’s record of success in Dundee. It will assess the extent to which the character of the city itself, its economy, demography, geography, history, and local media landscape, made Dundee especially prone to Nationalist politics. It will then address the more fundamental importance of the interaction of local political forces that were independent of the city’s nature through an examination of the ability of party machines, key individuals and political strategies to shape the city’s electoral landscape. The local SNP and its main rival throughout the period, the Labour Party, will be analysed in particular detail. The thesis will also take time to delve into the histories of the Conservatives, Liberals and Radical Left within the city and their influence on the fortunes of the SNP.

One is of a modern, vibrant city which has undergone a remarkable transformation. Already we have seen the growth of our cultural facilities, innovation in the developing bio-science and digital media industries and the reinvention of the city centre as a real tourist and shopping destination. Building on this is the prospect of a new era of manufacturing offered by renewable energy production and the long term jobs that go with it. Perhaps even more significantly, progress continues towards the creation of V & A Dundee in a building and location which could radically alter the way the city is perceived across the UK and abroad. At the same time there is another Dundee where levels of poverty and deprivation make every day life a struggle for individuals, families and communities across the city; where too many people are more likely to have insufficient income, lower life expectancy, experience higher levels of crime, greater unemployment and lower educational attainment; where children are less likely to achieve positive life outcomes. The Dundee Partnership believes that every person and family in Dundee wants, and should have the right, to share in the success we achieve as a city. Everyone should have the right to be heard and valued and to participate fully in our community and that no one should be denied that because of their economic status.

To install, decorate, remove and recycle a 25ft Christmas Tree at Yorkes Butchers on the corner of Hill St / Hilltown. A switch on event supported by local businesses will be Coldside Events held for local people, and local footfall in the area will increase through people coming C1813 Coldside £5,000 Group to see the tree. This will encourage people to use local shops and in turn make the area more appealing for future business. Approximately 250 people will attend the switch on event in December. Funds will contribute to the redevelopment of Dens Road PS playgrounds. Equipment includes a climbing wall, obstacle course, planters and new playground markings along Dens Road with specifically designed equipment to encourage creativity, imagination and play. The CP1801 Coldside £38,919 Primary School playground will be open to the community outside school times to provide an added community resource encouraging outdoor play. This project will benefit 350 families of children attending Dens Road PS as well as the whole community outside school times. Taster workshops for around 12 people, as well as to recruit, train and support at least Women’s Rape & 3 Volunteer Support Workers so that they can help survivors of rape, sexual abuse and EE1816 Sexual Abuse East End £2,930 exploitation in the ward.

    SCOTTISH STATUTORY INSTRUMENTS 2006 No. 375 LOCAL GOVERNMENT The Dundee City (Electoral Arrangements) Order 2006 Made - - - - 22nd June 2006 Coming into force - - 14th July 2006 The Scottish Ministers, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 17(2) of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973(a) and giving effect to proposals submitted to them on 28th February 2006 by the Boundary Commission under section 17(1) of that Act regarding electoral arrangements for the area of Dundee City Council, hereby make the following Order: Citation, commencement and application 1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Dundee City (Electoral Arrangements) Order 2006 and shall come into force on 14th July 2006. (2) This Order shall apply only for the purposes of elections to be held after the date on which section 1 of the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004(b) comes into force. Interpretation 2. In this Order– (a) a reference to an electoral ward is a reference to that electoral ward as constituted in this Order; and (b) “the deposited data” means the data recorded on the DVD-ROM– (i) entitled “Dundee City (Electoral Arrangements) 2006”; and (ii) deposited with the Scottish Ministers at their offices at Victoria Quay, Leith, Edinburgh EH6 6QQ. Electoral arrangements 3.—(1) The area of Dundee City Council shall be divided into 8 electoral wards. (2) The number and name of an electoral ward is as specified in columns 1 and 2 respectively of the Schedule to this Order. (3) The number of councillors to be returned for an electoral ward is as specified in the entry in column 3 of the Schedule to this Order corresponding to that electoral ward.
