Lorang, Ph.D. University of Nebraska, 2010 Adviser: Susan Belasco This dissertation examines the relationship of poetry and the U.S. daily newspaper in the nineteenth century and begins the process of recovering and reevaluating nineteenth-century newspaper poetry. In doing so, it draws on and participates in current discussions about the role of poetry and poets in society, the importance of periodicals in the development and dissemination of American literature in the nineteenth century, and the value of studying non-canonical texts. The appearance and function of poems in daily newspapers changed over the course of the nineteenth century, and these changes were part of larger shifts in the newspaper and its cultural function, in the role of poetry, in conceptions of authorship, and in the trajectory of American literature. Rarely considered in histories of American literature or studies of poetry, newspaper poems emerge here as a key part of the story of nineteenth-century American poetry, both because of their presence and participation in the daily lives of the people and because of their impact on literary culture. The four chapters offer new models for thinking about the cultural work of newspaper poetry. Together, they present an original explanation for newspaper poetry's rise and fall in relation to the literary canon. Because nineteenth-century newspapers are multi-genre, multi-authored texts that mediated political, social, popular, cultural, and civic experiences, they require a multi-disciplinary approach. This project engages and contributes to literary criticism, textual scholarship, and a range of histories—book, media, social—and develops understanding of the American literary record, publishing and book history, the history of the newspaper, and the role of the newspaper as cultural intermediary. In doing so, it expands understanding of the kinds and variety of poems published in newspapers, of the history of poetry in American literature, and of authorship in the nineteenth century. When considered in a contemporary context, this project provides a lens through which to view the reappearance of poetry in the struggling American newspaper of the twenty-first century. iii Acknowledgments Many people have contributed to and supported this dissertation. The relationship of poetry and newspapers in the nineteenth century is multifaceted. Many different kinds of poems were published in many different types of newspapers, and they appeared within a variety of contexts. Newspapers featured not only original poems, which could vary widely in subject matter and treatment, but also poems read at public events that were later printed in the newspaper, poems reprinted from other 2 newspapers, as well as from magazines and other periodicals, including broadsheets, and poems reprinted from books.

    Connotations Vol. 3.2 (1993/94) Christmas as Humbug: A Manuscript Poem by Letitia Elizabeth Landon ("L.E.L.") F. J. SYPHER "L.E.L." -as she signed her work-enjoyed great popularity and esteem during the 1820s and 1830s, not only in England, but also in the United States and on the European Continent.1 Landon was a literary prodigy, who started to compose poems as a child and began publishing in March 1820, when she was seventeen years old. She died at the age of thirty-six, in West Africa, where she had gone to live after her marriage in June 1838 to George Maclean, governor of the British post at Cape Coast (in present-day Ghana). In her remarkably productive career, Landon wrote seventeen volumes of poetry, three substantial novels, two books of short stories, a tragedy, countless reviews and critical articles, and many other works, in addition to journals and letters. In fact, considering the quantity and variety of her work, and the high regard accorded it by contempora- ries, one might make a case for Landon as one of the most prominent English poets during the period between the death of Byron in 1824 and the emergence of the great Victorians. Among specific reasons why her poetry is not better known today, is perhaps her early predilection for the now-obsolete genre of romantic verse narrative as, for instance, in The Improvisatrice (1824), or The Troubadour (1825), which were inspired by Sir WaIter Scott's poems. Furthermore, many of Landon's poems appeared in annual volumes like Forget Me Not, The Keepsake, or Fisher's Drawing Room Scrap Book-gift-books which enjoyed a great vogue at the time but went out of fashion in the 1840s, when Landon's work went out too, as if by association with an outmoded cultural phenomenon.

    Australian Journalism Review 25 (1) July 2003: 129-143 How much ‘real’ science do Australian and New Zealand newspapers publish? By Steve McIlwaine ABSTRACT Ten metropolitan or national newspapers – nine Australian and one New Zealand – were analysed over either seven or six years for their content of science stories according to strict criteria aimed at filtering out “non-core” science, such as computer technology, as well as what was considered non-science and pseudo- science. The study sought to establish the proportions of “real” science to total editorial content in these newspapers. Results were compared with similar content in US, UK, European and South-East Asian dailies. Introduction Although quite rigorous surveys by science-based organisations in Britain, the United States and Australia (Saulwick poll 1989, AGB McNair poll 1997) have shown uniformly that news consumers want to see or hear much more about science in news media, significantly above their appetite for sport and politics, news media appear not to have responded. Despite a substantial increase from a very low base in what is described as science news in the past 30 years (Arkin 1990, DITAC 1991, p.35-43, Harris, 1993, McCleneghan, 1994) and especially in the 1990s (Metcalfe and Gascoigne 1995), the increase seems not to have kept pace with apparent demand. The “blame” for such responses – or non-responses – to audience data have been studied previously (Riffe and Belbase 1983, Culbertson and Stempel 1984, Thurlow and Milo 1993, Beam 1995) in relation to such areas as overseas and medical news and appear to indicate in part an inertia, conservatism or hostility among senior news executives.

Numerous historians have studied the Civil War and its causes, but this study will use only newspapers to examine what they can show about the causes that eventually led the country to war. Newspapers have long chronicled events in American history, and they offer valuable information about the issues and concerns of their communities. This study begins with an overview of the newspaper coverage of the tariff and territorial issues that began to divide the country in the early decades of the 1800s. The study then moves from the Wilmot Proviso in 1846 to Lincoln’s election in 1860, a period in which sectionalism and disunion increasingly appeared on newspaper pages and the lines of disagreement between the North and the South hardened. The primary sources used in this study were a diverse sampling of articles from newspapers around the country and includes representation from both southern and northern newspapers. Studying these antebellum newspapers offers insight into the political, social, and economic concerns of the day, which can give an indication of how the sectional differences in these areas became so divisive.
