Contact Gail Gandolfi, [email protected] if you would like to join us. 8 KEN MEDEMA CONCERT AND FUND!!! For those of you who were here in the 2008 Bicentennial year, remember the concert? Remember how Ken incredibly is able to take stories from the audience and compose a song on the spot? even with some nice rhyming to the lyrics?! Remember that since then Rev. Ross recorded 3 CD’s in Ken’s home studios, benefitting from his amazing harmonizing and orchestrations. Well, a few of us would really like a return visit from Ken, and he has agreed to PALM SUNDAY WEEKEND (April 4-5) of 2020! Well, “agreed,” comes with a substantial fee of course, and that’s why we need to start raising some funds now to offset expenses, even as we hope for great publicity and large ticket sales! We could engage Ken any way we wish (within reason!) on that Saturday eve and Sunday. He could work with our choir; he could help lead Sunday morning, and the actual concert (publicized WIDELY) would be most likely April 5 Sunday afternoon at 4pm. Wouldn’t you like to be on a planning team? If so, please let Ross know. If you write a check one day (to Belleville Church), just put in the Memo line: KEN MEDEMA CONCERT FUND. Ken attracts almost all manner of Christians, though I hear he has recently joined a UCC church after growing up in a conservative Calvinistic church and school. He knows how to speak many languages of faith….. using incredible poetry and metaphors! Future newsletters will include more of his lyrics… but here are some words from a recent song: I wanna see the Real thing, I wanna see the big deal. I wanna see a church that sounds and smells like “Welcome." I don’t want to see one more institution, with promises and platitudes and pretty songs. I wanna see the God-life that can turn a soul around. I wanna see the God-power that can break the barriers down. 9 Belleville Roots Music Opens Fall Season with Barrence Whitfield on Saturday, September 28th Barrence Whitfield is a Boston-based singer who is a powerful soul singer and rock and roll disciple. “Barrence Whitfield is a treasure, with unbelievable pipes, an unimpeachable discography (with great taste in cover tunes) and undeniable appeal.” – POPMATTERS “Showcases a wild musical abandon.” – USA TODAY BARRENCE WHITFIELD & THE SAVAGES UNDER THE SAVAGE SKY RELEASE DATE: AUGUST 21, 2015 When asked about the methods and the madness It’s the kind of hip-shake proto-rockabilly that once behind capturing the scorched earth soul of Under had parents dragging their kids to the confessional the Savage Sky, guitarist Peter Greenberg explained for listening to that devil music. “Adjunct Street,” a that the band was eager for something “harder haunting, grinding ballad, gets you absinthe-drunk and garagier” than their previous record, while still on Greenberg’s warbly guitar and Barrence’s deep connecting with the energy and originality of the growl, and “Full Moon in the Daylight Sky” brings the classics. Given that the previous release, Dig Thy brooding, ‘60s 3 a.m. soul. Savage Soul (their 2013 Bloodshot debut and first U.S. release in a couple decades), was a 12-round One of BW&S’s signature moves is their unpredictable, sonic knockout, the R&B wallop of Under the Savage deep-catalog choice of covers and Under the Savage Sky may very well stand for ‘Roundhouse & Beatdown.’ Sky unearths some exquisite gems. Getting the Savage treatment in this bout are Timmy “Mr. Soul Satisfaction” There’s no harder hitter than frontman Barrence Willis’s “I’m a Full Grown Man,” all peacock-strut Whitfield of Boston, MA. When he hits the boards with garage blues with an above-the-pulpit B3; Kid Thomas’s the Savages, you’re either gonna ride the energy or be “The Wolf Pack,” done here with stalking, back-alley crushed by it.

  • Artist: Jim Lauderdale Album: Country Super Hits Vol 1 Label: Yep Roc

  • Barrence Whitfield & the Savages
Alt-Nation: Barrence Whitfield & The Savages – Under the Savage Sky (Bloodshot Records) Barrence Whitfield and The Savages have been kicking up a rock ‘n’ roll ruckus off and on for over 30 years. Whitfield and The Savages were known for their bruising take on R&B and soul with reckless garage rock-fueled abandon. It was like some combination of Sam Cooke, Don Covay and Little Richard being backed by The Seeds. The garage rock wasn’t a surprise given Whitfield founded the band with Peter Greenberg who was already a Boston garage punk legend for his time in DMZ and The Lyres. With any band that has been around that long, there is always a question of whether they still have it. Can they still rock or are they like a boxer all punched out and hanging onto the ropes for dear life? The Savages may have been in the latter category for a while; they did take a 16-year hiatus between albums before 2011’s Savage Kings (Bloodshot Records) that had Whitfield reunite with founding guitarist Peter Greenberg and Phil Lenker. If Savage Kings showed that Whitfield and The Savages are rejuvenated and ready to rock, their new album Under the Savage Sky offers all of that and more. Under the Savage Sky swings coming out of the gates with the ’70s R&B stomp of “I’m a Full Grown Man” and “The Claw.” What really separates Whitfield and The Savages from the garage rock scene they came out of is the groove. They make you want to shake your ass, not sit admiring some craft beer.
