PROJECT DESCRIPTION Aro Eberle Architects was hired by the Monona Public Library to develop plan for the addition of new vestibules to the Monona Library . The main driver behind the project is to improve energy efficiency by limiting the amount of infiltration in to the building cause by ingress and egress of library patrons. Originally, we investigated both the Nichols Rd. and Schluter Rd. entrances for new vestibules, however, after verifying that the cost to build both vestibules exceeded the original budget and expectations, we revised the project to include a vestibule at only the Schluter Rd entrance. The Nichols Rd. entrance has a lower frequency of use and it was deemed that its lower use did not justify the cost of a complete vestibule. The Nichols Rd. entry will receive new, high-efficiency and glazing in place of the existing doors and glazing in the same configuration. The Schluter Rd. entrance is a better candidate for the addition of a vestibule because of the higher traffic levels, and because there is an existing space beneath the entire front stoop. Adding the vestibule solves long term moisture and insulation issues in this area. The vestibule can also rest on the existing concrete basement and , eliminating the need to excavate for foundations. This project addresses two other areas of concern at the Schluter Rd entrance. There is an underground located beneath the sidewalk approach to the building with two metal grates at each corner. This vault does not currently any infrastructure and can be filled in as part of this project. This eliminates any safety concerns surrounding this concealed underground space covered by a concrete slab. There are also storm water issues causing problems at the front entrance that will be addressed with the project. The vestibule and will be framed with cold-formed steel studs. The roof infill will be rather flat, requiring a rubber membrane roof in lieu of shingles. The glazing will be thermally broken anodized aluminum with clear insulated glazing units. The new vestibule cladding material is planned as a concealed fastener composite material with the look and texture of wood siding. It was chosen to complement the existing material pallet of white stucco or white painted concrete and red brick. It is a very durable and low maintenance material. It won’t require any special detailing of the existing foundation walls to install. The new roof edge will be a straight line across the front of the building. A new gutter will connect to the existing gutters and new downspouts will help direct run-off away from the building. A missing downspout near the Northeast corner will be put back into place and connected to the storm sewer.
