Focusing on Lexis in English Classrooms in Japan: Analyses of Textbook Exercises and Proposals for Consciousness-raising Activities by Michiko Kasuya A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Arts of the University of Birmingham in part fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language (TEFL/TESL) This dissertation consists of approximately 15,000 words Supervisor: Dr Susan Hunston Centre for English Language Studies School of English University of Birmingham Edgbaston Birmingham B15 2TT England March 2000 ABSTRACT Recently the importance of focusing on lexis has been widely recognised in language acquisition theories. In particular, it is considered indispensable to deal with fixed expressions, lexical collocations and patterns, in consciousness-raising ways. This dissertation has attempted to reveal the problems of activities in the current English classrooms in Japan, especially regarding lexis teaching, and to propose activities that could develop learners’ competence to use the language. By analysing exercises from authorised textbooks, it has become obvious that English teaching in Japan has two problems. Firstly, the activities need to be more carefully constructed as to what knowledge they aim to develop in learners. There is too much emphasis on features of single words and not enough focus on lexical collocations. Secondly, the ways the activities are conducted need improvement. They merely require learners to memorise and manipulate the lexical items, and do not encourage learners to examine them. This dissertation proposes several activities, such as creating a learner’s concordance, comparing English collocations with Japanese collocations, and connecting patterns and meanings using reference materials. -

Find this book (affiliate link): In Indian writer Mulk Raj Anand’s novel The Big Heart (1945), student leader Satyapal listens to Azad Hind Radio during the Second World War. These broadcasts by political radical Subhas Chandra Bose were trying to influence Indian ‘hearts and minds’ against British imperialism by using German radio services from 1942 onwards. On the other hand, the poet Purun Singh Bhagat, another character in the same novel, declares that the English are ‘on the side of truth against falsehood’ (1). Yet, curiously, neither Bhagat nor any others in the novel are depicted as listening to the BBC. -

HOOKAH: BACKGROUND, HISTORY, AND HEALTH CONSEQUENCES WHAT IS HOOKAH? Hookah is a waterpipe that is used to smoke tobacco. A special type of tobacco is indirectly heated using coals or wood embers. Hookah is also known as shisha, sheesha, narghile, argileh, goza, and hubbly-bubbly. WHAT TYPE OF TOBACCO IS USED IN A HOOKAH PIPE? The tobacco used in a hookah is called shisha or maassel. Shisha is a sticky mixture of tobacco, honey or molasses, and other flavorings. Shisha is available in many flavorings such as: bubble gum, peanut butter, mango, grape, and mint. HOW LONG HAVE PEOPLE BEEN SMOKING HOOKAH? Hookah smoking originated many centuries ago. The exact origins of hookah are unclear. Many believe that hookah originated in India. Today, hookah is popular in the Middle East, Turkey, and parts of Asia and Africa. WHO USES HOOKAH IN THE UNITED STATES? IS SMOKING HOOKAH SAFER THAN SMOKING Hookah is growing in popularity in the United States particularly among college students. Hookah bars or lounges are popping up across the country CIGARETTES? and are seen as a place to gather with friends and socialize. No. Many people wrongly believe In the Twin Cities, hookah is particularly popular among East African that smoking hookah is safer than Immigrant groups (Somali and Oromo) and the young adult/college smoking cigarettes. This is not true. student population. One study of college students found that nearly half Unlike cigarette smoke, hookah (46%) of college students report that they have tried hookah. In Minnesota, smoke is cooled by water. This cooling makes hookah smoke feel 18-24 year olds report the highest rates of hookah use; nearly 4% of less harsh on the throat and lungs all 18-24 year olds and 9% of 18-24 year old cigarette smokers report than cigarette smoke. -

Yes, It Is True. While Chinese Sound and Writing Systems Can Be Challenging for Some Learners, Chinese Grammar Is Rarely Deemed Difficult
Grammar I’ve heard that Chinese grammar is relatively easy. Is it true? Yes, it is true. While Chinese sound and writing systems can be challenging for some learners, Chinese grammar is rarely deemed difficult. Chinese is not an inflectional language, meaning it does not distinguish gender, person, tense, case, number, etc. Its sentence structures are mostly straightforward, and many of them overlap with English grammar. For example, the common English structure ‘Subject + Verb + Object’ structure, e.g. I love you, or My dog ate my homework, is also widely used in Chinese. What are some of the unique characteristics of Chinese grammar? Adjectives Are Verbs: Adjectives, or stative verbs, function as verbs, and are usually preceded by an intensifier such as ‘hěn’ (very), or ‘yǒudiǎnr’ (a little). Use of shì,verb ‘to be’,as is required in the English grammar (He is tall), is prohibited. Some examples: Zhōngwén hěn róngyì. (‘Chinese very easy.’) → Chinese is easy. Yīngwén yǒudiǎnr nán. (‘English a little hard.’) → English is a little hard. Note that the intensifier is dropped when a comparison is made: Zhōngwén róngyì. (‘Chinese easy.’) → Chinese is easier. Yīngwén nán. (‘English hard.’) → English is harder. Principle of Temporal sequence: Word order in a Chinese sentence can be very different from that in an English one, where the subject and verb often precede other linguistic units such as prepositions and time word, e.g. ‘I went to New York by train with a friend last weekend.’ A Chinese sentence, on the other hand, follows a temporal sequence principle in which word order is determined based on the relative sequence. -

LANGUAGE VARIETY IN ENGLAND 1 ♦ Language Variety in England One thing that is important to very many English people is where they are from. For many of us, whatever happens to us in later life, and however much we move house or travel, the place where we grew up and spent our childhood and adolescence retains a special significance. Of course, this is not true of all of us. More often than in previous generations, families may move around the country, and there are increasing numbers of people who have had a nomadic childhood and are not really ‘from’ anywhere. But for a majority of English people, pride and interest in the area where they grew up is still a reality. The country is full of football supporters whose main concern is for the club of their childhood, even though they may now live hundreds of miles away. Local newspapers criss-cross the country in their thousands on their way to ‘exiles’ who have left their local areas. And at Christmas time the roads and railways are full of people returning to their native heath for the holiday period. Where we are from is thus an important part of our personal identity, and for many of us an important component of this local identity is the way we speak – our accent and dialect. Nearly all of us have regional features in the way we speak English, and are happy that this should be so, although of course there are upper-class people who have regionless accents, as well as people who for some reason wish to conceal their regional origins.
