Januar bis 3. Cats, Mary Poppins, Les Misérables) zu erleben. Die Liebesgeschichte in den letzten Tagen des Vietnamkriegs zählt zu den erfolgreichsten Musicals überhaupt und definierte in den 90er Jahren auch in Deutschland das Genre neu. Seitdem zog Miss Saigon weltweit über 36 Millionen Zuschauer in ihren Bann. Im Kölner Musical Dome ist von 22. Januar bis 3. März 2019 erstmalig und exklusiv für Deutschland die brillante englischsprachige Neuproduktion des legendären Stückes zu erleben, die unlängst auch am Broadway Erfolge feierte. Liebe in Zeiten des Krieges Miss Saigon beginnt in den letzten Tagen des Vietnamkriegs und erzählt die dramatische Geschichte der jungen Vietnamesin Kim und des amerikanischen GI Chris. In einem Nachtclub lernen sich die beiden kennen und verlieben sich ineinander. Doch ihre Liebe steht unter keinem guten Stern: In den Wirren des amerikanischen Truppenrückzugs werden sie voneinander getrennt und verlieren jeglichen Kontakt. Kim bleibt in Asien zurück und bringt ihren gemeinsamen Sohn zur Welt, Chris findet in den USA ein neues Glück. Drei Jahre später kreuzen sich ihre Lebenswege schicksalhaft in Bangkok wieder. Seit über 25 Jahren ein Welterfolg Als Musical setzte Miss Saigon in den 90er Jahren ganz neue Maßstäbe. Nicht nur, weil sich das hochdramatische Stück sensibel mit dem Zeitgeschehen der jüngeren Weltgeschichte befasste, sondern auch wegen seiner epischen Erzählung, die in überwältigenden Bildern an internationale Schauplätze vom kriegserschütterten Saigon, in die USA und schließlich bis nach Thailand führt. Seit der Londoner Uraufführung am 20. September 1989 und der Broadwaypremiere im April 1991 hat sich Miss Saigon zu einem der erfolgreichsten Musicals unserer Zeit entwickelt. Bislang wurde der Musical-Welthit in über 369 Städten in 32 Ländern gezeigt, zog über 36 Millionen Zuschauer in seinen Bann und wurde in 15 Sprachen aufgeführt. Miss Saigon gewann über 70 Auszeichnungen – davon zwei Olivier Awards und drei Tony Awards. In Deutschland feierte das bildgewaltige Musical 1994 in Stuttgart eine umjubelte Premiere und läutete – im eigens dafür erbauten Theater und mit Musicalstar Uwe Kröger in der Hauptrolle – eine neue Ära des deutschen Musicaltheaters ein. Auch die spektakulären Bühneneffekte setzten ganz neue Maßstäbe und sorgten dafür, dass Miss Saigon mit fünf Jahren Laufzeit und 3,1 Millionen Besuchern eine der erfolgreichsten deutschen Produktionen ihrer Zeit wurde. Gefeierte Neuproduktion 2014 entstand in London unter der Federführung des Originalproduzenten Cameron Mackintosh eine spektakuläre Neuinszenierung mit über 80 Beteiligten. Die Musik von Claude- Michel Schönberg und die Texte von Alain Boublil, die als Kreativ-Duo bereits mit Les Misérables zu Weltruhm gelangten, wurden eigens für die englischsprachige Neuproduktion um einen weiteren Song ergänzt und sorgfältig aktualisiert. „Es ist kaum zu glauben, dass es über 25 Jahre her ist, seit Miss Saigon in London uraufgeführt wurde. Nichtsdestotrotz ist die bewegende Liebesgeschichte aktueller denn je“, ist der international erfolgreiche Theatermacher Cameron Mackintosh überzeugt.     Miss Saigon: The Asian Experience in the Perspective of the White Man Miss Saigon: The Asian Experience in the Perspective of the White Man Stacey Jung Abstract Stuart Hall defines stereotyping as a way in which mediamakers separate and exclude groups of people, a hegemonic practice that works to maintain a social order (Hall, 1997). The producers and writers of the musical film Miss Saigon aim to show a tragic love story between a Vietnamese woman and a white GI soldier during the Vietnam War; however, the mediamaker’s narrow perspective on the war causes the musical to feel limited in showing and understanding various experiences of Asian immigration. While mediamakers believe that Miss Saigon encourages Asian representation, by framing the immigrant experience through the perspective of white male producers, the musical film depicts Asians as exotic and inferior and creates lasting stereotypes. This form of “othering” creates and maintains fixed differences between the “insiders” and “outsiders” as the experiences of minorities are told by people in positions of power. ** Mediamakers as a part of the creative process believe that the musical does encapsulate a true experience during the Vietnam War; however, many Vietnamese Americans continuously protest against the show and its stereotypes. Lea Salonga, the actress who starred as the role of Kim in the original debut of the show in 1989, responded to the controversial nature of the show in an interview. She believes that the musical is not necessarily an inaccurate portrayal of Asian relationships with GI soldiers based on her own observations when she was growing up in the Asian American Research Journal.

    The Miss Saigon Controversy In 1990, theatre producer Cameron Mackintosh brought the musical Miss Saigon to Broadway following a highly successful run in London. Based on the opera Madame Butterfly, Miss Saigon takes place during the Vietnam War and focuses on a romance between an American soldier and a Vietnamese orphan named Kim. In the musical, Kim is forced to work at ‘Dreamland,’ a seedy bar owned by the half-French, half-Vietnamese character ‘the Engineer.’ The production was highly anticipated, generating millions of dollars in ticket sales before it had even opened. Controversy erupted, however, when producers revealed that Jonathan Pryce, a white British actor, would reprise his role as the Eurasian ‘Engineer.’ Asian American actor B.D. Wong argued that by casting a white actor in a role written for an Asian actor, the production supported the practice of “yellow-face.” Similar to “blackface” minstrel shows of the 19th and 20th centuries, “yellow-face” productions cast non-Asians in roles written for Asians, often relying on physical and cultural stereotypes to make broad comments about identity. Wong asked his union, Actors’ Equity Association, to “force Cameron Mackintosh and future producers to cast their productions with racial authenticity.” Actors’ Equity Association initially agreed and refused to let Pryce perform: “Equity believes the casting of Mr. Pryce as a Eurasian to be especially insensitive and an affront to the Asian community.” Moreover, many argued that the casting of Pryce further limited already scarce professional opportunities for Asian American actors.
