This follows an exhibition of recent American accessions which closed on Sunday, September 27. Among the new acquisitions are works by three famous French artists, Degas, Derain and Berard; by an Italian, Modigllanl, who did his principal work in France; and by the ex-German, Eric Isenburger, and the Palestinian, Reuven Rubin, both of whom are now in the United States. A sculpture and a drawing by Jacques Lipchitz, now living in the United States, complete the group. The Modigliani painting Bride and Groom has been given by Frederic Clay Bartlett, noted collector and patron of art, who is an Honorary Trustee of the Museum of Modern Art. -

The second volume deals with the paintings of artists born between 1850 and 1910. The documented catalogue of the Corcoran's American paintings carries forward the project, initiated by former Director Hermann Warner Williams, Jr., of providing a series of defini• tive publications of the Gallery's considerable collection of American art. The Gallery intends to continue with other volumes devoted to contemporary American painting, sculpture, drawings, watercolors and prints. In recent years the growing interest in and concern for American paint• ing has become apparent. -

BRETTELL, Searle Curator of European Painting HAD Frederic Clay Bartlett died in 1924, leav- ing his entire collection to The Art Institute of Chicago, he would be forgotten today, overshadowed even in Chicago by Arthur Jerome Eddy and Annie Swann Coburn.' Yet, he is remembered today as one of the great American collectors of modern art for a gift he made to the Art Institute in 1926 and added to in 1927, 1928, and 1932. -

PRESS ANNOUNCEMENT | LONDON | FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | 01 MARCH 2021 شاهکار ه نر دوره قاجار IMPORTANT QAJAR PAINTING TO LEAD رAUCTIONرARTرISLAMICرCHRISTIE’S ON 1 APRIL 2021 A DISCOVERY AT BONNET HOUSE MUSEUM & GARDENS IN FLORIDA A Qajar painting depicting a Persian New Year, Norouz, procession from the 19th century, measuring 256x442cm estimate GBP 1,000,000-1,500,000 London – Christie’s next sale of Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, which takes place on 1 April 2021, will be led by a recently rediscovered Qajar painting of the utmost importance. The painting, depicting a Persian New Year, Norouz, procession, was bought by the artist and collector Frederic Clay Bartlett (1873-1953) in the early 1920s in the US, to be hung in his studio at the family’s winter retreat “Bonnet House” in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Bartletts were important collectors of French Impressionist and Modern art. His collection in this field was donated to the Art Institute of Chicago, where the 25 paintings comprise the Art Institute’s Helen Birch Bartlett Memorial Collection. As for the art collection at Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, it comprises works by Frederic Clay Bartlett and Evelyn Fortune Bartlett, as well as objects collected throughout their lives, creating a historic artists’ estate. Patrick Shavloske, CEO, Bonnet House Museum & Garden commented: ”Bonnet House Museum & Gardens has been honored to steward this incredible painting since Evelyn Fortune Bartlett preserved her beloved Fort Lauderdale, Florida home as an historic house museum in 1983. But the time has come for the Qajar painting to move to a new home that is better positioned to give the artwork the care and honor it so richly deserves. -

A vast portion of the collection consists of research files on individual artists. Of particular interest are files concerning the so-called degenerate art campaign by the Nazis and the recovery of confiscated artwork after the World war II. Language: Collection material is in German Biographical/Historical Note Wilhelm Friedrich Arntz (1903-1985) was a German lawyer, art expert and independent researcher of twentieth century art. He was also one of the early collectors of German Expressionism. Parallel to collecting artworks, he aquired publications on 20th century art and compiled a wealth of archival material, including newspaper clippings, correspondence of artists, art historians and dealers, and ephemeral items such as invitations to exhibition openings. Trained as a lawyer, Arntz began his professional career as political editor for the newspaper Frankurter Generalanzeiger, but he lost his job in 1933 after the Nazis came to power. -
