The Atlas/Centaur and Titan/Centaur combinations have boosted into orbit a variety of spacecraft on scientific, lunar, and planetary exploration missions and Earth orbit missions. These versatile, reliable, and accurate space booster systems will contribute to many significant space pro- grams well into the shuttle era. Centaur D1-A is the latest version of the Nation's first high-energy cryogenic launch vehicle. Major improvements in avionics and payload struc- ture have enhanced mission flexibility and mission success reliability. The liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants and the pressurized stainless steel structure provide a top-performance vehicle. Centaur's primary thrust comes from two Pratt 8, Whitney constant- thrust, turbopump-fed, regeneratively cooled, liquid-fueled rocket engines. Each RL10A-3-3a engine can generate 16 500 lb of thrust, for a total thrust of 33 000 lb.

    10/2/95 rev EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This report, entitled "Hazard Analysis of Commercial Space Transportation," is devoted to the review and discussion of generic hazards associated with the ground, launch, orbital and re-entry phases of space operations. Since the DOT Office of Commercial Space Transportation (OCST) has been charged with protecting the public health and safety by the Commercial Space Act of 1984 (P.L. 98-575), it must promulgate and enforce appropriate safety criteria and regulatory requirements for licensing the emerging commercial space launch industry. This report was sponsored by OCST to identify and assess prospective safety hazards associated with commercial launch activities, the involved equipment, facilities, personnel, public property, people and environment. The report presents, organizes and evaluates the technical information available in the public domain, pertaining to the nature, severity and control of prospective hazards and public risk exposure levels arising from commercial space launch activities. The US Government space- operational experience and risk control practices established at its National Ranges serve as the basis for this review and analysis. The report consists of three self-contained, but complementary, volumes focusing on Space Transportation: I. Operations; II. Hazards; and III. Risk Analysis. This Executive Summary is attached to all 3 volumes, with the text describing that volume highlighted. Volume I: Space Transportation Operations provides the technical background and terminology, as well as the issues and regulatory context, for understanding commercial space launch activities and the associated hazards. Chapter 1, The Context for a Hazard Analysis of Commercial Space Activities, discusses the purpose, scope and organization of the report in light of current national space policy and the DOT/OCST regulatory mission.

    Reflections on Centaur Upper Stage Integration by the NASA Lewis (Glenn) Research Center Scott R. Graham* NASA Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, Ohio 44135 The NASA Glenn (then Lewis) Research Center (GRC) led several expendable launch vehicle (ELV) projects from 1963 to 1998, most notably the Centaur upper stage. These major, comprehensive projects included system management, system development, integration (both payload and stage), and launch operations. The integration role that GRC pioneered was truly unique and highly successful. Its philosophy, scope, and content were not just invaluable to the missions and vehicles it supported, but also had significant Agency- wide benefits. An overview of the NASA Lewis Research Center (now the NASA Glenn Research Center) philosophy on ELV integration is provided, focusing on Atlas/Centaur, Titan/Centaur, and Shuttle/Centaur vehicles and programs. The necessity of having a stable, highly technically competent in-house staff is discussed. Significant depth of technical penetration of contractor work is another critical component. Functioning as a cohesive team was more than a concept: GRC senior management, NASA Headquarters, contractors, payload users, and all staff worked together. The scope, content, and history of launch vehicle integration at GRC are broadly discussed. Payload integration is compared to stage development integration in terms of engineering and organization. Finally, the transition from buying launch vehicles to buying launch services is discussed, and thoughts on future possibilities

A concerted effort is underway within the NASA engineering community, under the cognizance of the NASA Office of the Chief Engineer, to promote more consistent practices across the NASA centers in the areas of dynamics and structures design and test criteria for spacecraft and payloads. This effort has resulted in NASA standards in the fields of structural design and test factors of safety, loads analyses, vibroacoustic test criteria, and pyroshock test criteria. A parallel effort, also funded by the Office of the Chief Engineer, was undertaken by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and its contractors to summarize and assess mission dynamic environments, state-of-the-art procedures for predicting the dynamic excitations or loads induced by those environments and the structural responses to those excitations, and for establishing dynamics criteria with appropriate margins for the design and testing of a spacecraft and its components, along with the equipment and procedures used for testing. Devezas TC https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7993-4919 ABSTRACT: Current Space Launch Vehicles use chemical reactions (solid and liquid propellants) to achieve suffi cient thrust to launch artifacts and humans into space. Propulsion technologies can be framed in three different categories: “escape propulsion”, “in-space propulsion”, and “deep space propulsion”. The launch vehicles currently used for “escape propulsion” rely on mature technologies, which experienced only small incremental improvements over the last fi ve decades, and breakthroughs for this kind of propulsion are not foreseen for the next two decades. This research gathered information on the main operational heavy-lift space launch vehicles with capacity over 5,000 kg that are used to reach GEO (Geostationary Earth Orbit) by the United States, Russia, Europe, China, Japan and India and compared their thrust capability. The results show that performance was improved mainly by adding boosters, increasing gross propellant weight, with larger diameter rocket motors and using more effi cient liquid propellant pairs. Information regarding the frequency of published scientifi c articles and patents on Space Vehicles Propulsion Systems since the 1960s was also gathered, which demonstrates some progress in the last years, mainly in USA and Europe.
