JENSEN AGRICULTURE CANADA RESEARCH STATION SUMMERLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA VOH lZ0 ABSTRACT A suspension of Heterorhabditis heliothidis Khan, Brooks and Kirschmann, sprayed in mid-June onto the trunks of peach trees infested with peachtree borer (PTB) Synanthedon exitiosa (Say) larvae significantly (P <.05) reduced the numbers of PTB adults that ec10sed from the feeding tunnels. Injections of nematode suspensions into and on the outside of active PTB tunnels did not reduce the number of emerging PTB adults to a level significantly (P <.05) lower than those emerging in the control cages. The study also confirms that the larvae of the peachtree borer require up to 2 years to complete development in stone fruit trees in the southern interior of British Columbia. INTRODUCTION The peachtree borer (PTB), Synanthedon exitiosa (Say) attacks most stone fruit trees and is a particularly serious problem on peaches, nectarines, apricots, prunes and plums in the southern interior of British Columbia. King and Morris (1956), as well as Madsen and Procter (1982), reported this species to have one generation per year in western North America in which adults are active through the summer. Female moths oviposit several hundred eggs on the trunks of stone fruit trees near the soil line (Anthon, 1949) and on the trunk bark up to a height of 60 cm above the soil line as well as on adjacent grass and weed foliage in stone fruit blocks with dense, deep cover crops (F.L. -

The chemical ecology of bark and ambrosia beetles that colonize deciduous trees Purdue University, Ph.D. student, Department of Entomology SUMMARY The health and productivity of U.S. forests are increasingly threatened by wood-boring insects (Solomon 1995, Haack 2006). These threats are predicted to increase as climate change decreases host resistance and international trade facilitates the introduction of exotic species (Kuhnholz et al. 2003, Brockerhoff et al. 2006). Compromised host resistance predisposes trees to increased colonization by wood-borers and associated pathogens (Raffa and Berryman 1983). Exotic forest pests, most of which are bark and ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytinae), pose a greater risk than native species due to a lack of co-evolved defenses in tree hosts (Brockerhoff et al. 2006, Haack 2006, Hulcr and Dunn 2011). To locate susceptible hosts, many bark and ambrosia beetles rely on behaviorally active compounds, known as semiochemicals. Many attractive and repellent semiochemicals have been exploited within integrated pest management (IPM) programs (Otvos 2004, Pedigo and Rice 2014). While diverse semiochemicals of conifer- infesting bark and ambrosia beetles have been described, compounds that attract or repel scolytines which colonize deciduous trees remain relatively unknown. The identification of additional semiochemicals of bark and ambrosia beetles of deciduous trees will increase our capacity to sustainably manage some of the most destructive biological threats to valuable tree species. As few semiochemicals of deciduous tree pests have been identified, the capacity to monitor and manage wood-boring pests in managed and natural hardwood forests is limited. The overall goal of my research is to identify specific compounds or combinations that bark and ambrosia beetle pests of deciduous trees utilize to locate host trees and mates. -

ABSTRACT This article presents both ethnoentomological notes on Nahuatl and Mixtec language terms as they are applied to Cerambycidae (Coleoptera) and distributional records for species collected during three projects carried out in the states of Guerrero and Puebla, Mexico. Some comparative data from other Mesoamerican and Native American languages are discussed. Indigenous common names are mapped onto current taxonomic nomenclature, and an analysis is offered of the logical basis for Indigenous classification: the exclusion of some cerambycids and the inclusion of other beetles in the nominal native “cerambycid” category. New state distributional records for the Cerambycidae collected in this study are offered for Guerrero: Bebelis picta Pascoe, Callipogon senex Dupont, Neocompsa macrotricha Martins, Olenosus ser- rimanus Bates, Ornithia mexicana zapotensis Tippmann, Stenygra histrio Audinet-Serville, Strongylaspis championi Bates, Lissonotus flavocinctus puncticollis Bates, and Nothopleurus lobigenis Bates; and Puebla: Juiaparus mexicanus (Thomson), Ptychodes guttulatus Dillon and Dillon, and Steirastoma senex White. Yet, it was still too early to experience the real explosion of bird song, which usually happens after dawn. Then, after 05:30 AM, the chorus started when a vocal Great Kiskadee broke the morning silence, followed by the scratchy notes of two Hoffmann´s Woodpeckers, a nesting pair of Inca Doves, the ascending and monotonous song of the Yellow-bellied Elaenia, and the cacophony of an (apparently!) engaged pair of Rufous-naped Wrens. This was indeed a warm welcome to magical Costa Rica! To complement the first morning of birding, two boreal migrants, Baltimore Orioles and a Tennessee Warbler, joined the bird feast just outside the hotel area. Broad-billed Motmot . Photo: D. Circling the slope of Poas volcano, we eventually reached the inspiring Bosque de Paz. With its hummingbird feeders and trails transecting a beautiful moss-covered forest, this lodge offered us the opportunity to see one of Costa Rica´s most difficult-to-see Grallaridae, the Scaled Antpitta. -

K1P 6P4, CANADA;[email protected] 3Department of Recent Invertebrates, Virginia Museum of Natural History, 21 Starling Avenue, Martinsville, Virginia 24112; [email protected] ABSTRACT: One-hundred thirty-five taxa (130 identified to species), in at least 97 genera, of weevils (superfamily Curculionoidea) were documented during a 21-year field survey (1998–2018) of the George Washington Memorial Parkway national park site that spans parts of Fairfax and Arlington Counties in Virginia. Twenty-three species documented from the parkway are first records for the state. Of the nine capture methods used during the survey, Malaise traps were the most successful. Periods of adult activity, based on dates of capture, are given for each species. Relative abundance is noted for each species based on the number of captures. Sixteen species adventive to North America are documented from the parkway, including three species documented for the first time in the state. Range extensions are documented for two species. Images of five species new to Virginia are provided. Keywords: beetles, biodiversity, Malaise traps, national parks, new state records, Potomac Gorge. INTRODUCTION This study provides a preliminary list of the weevils of the superfamily Curculionoidea within the George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) national park site in northern Virginia. -

A. glabripennis is a serious pest both in China and the U.S. This research project was developed in response to the need for efficient monitoring traps to assess population density and dispersal in the field and to detect new introductions at ports of entry. The first stages of the project aimed at filling the gaps in our knowledge of the effect of semiochemicals on A. glabripennis adult behavior and exploring potential use of these chemicals for monitoring purposes. Semiochemicals studied were the male- produced putative volatile pheromone vbutan-1-ol and 4-(n-heptyloxy)butanal) and plant volatiles. -
