My name is Boiler (or Boilerroo), but you can call me Mike if you want to! I've been in the furry fandom since 1997 (24 years in total!) – time flies when you're having fun! I am a non-binary transmasc person and I use he/hIm pronouns. If you don't know what that means, you are free to ask me and I will explain – but in sum: I am trans! I am also an artist, part time media arts instructor and a full-time librarian in my outside-of-furry life. I am very excited to usher in the next years of DenFur – I know the pandemic has really been an unprecedented time in our lives and affected us all deeply, but I am hoping with the start of DenFur we can reunite as a community once more, safely and with a whole lot of furry fun! Of course, we will have a lot of rules, safeguards and requirements in place to make sure that our event is held as safely as possible. Thank you everyone for your patience as we have worked diligently to host this event! I hope you all have an amazing convention, and be sure to say hello! Thank you all. i DEDICATION I would like to thank my family and friends who have supported me through this thesis project and my overall academic career. They have been there to bounce ideas off and complain to. Thank you for your interest in my work. ii ABSTRACT Pros and Cons: Anime Conventions and Cosplayers Angela Barajas, M.A. The University of Texas at Arlington, 2018 Supervising Professor: David Arditi Among the brightly-hued convention (con) halls, people dressed in feathers, foam armor, and spandex pose for pictures with one another as cosplayers. Cosplay is a way for fans to present themselves and their group to the fan community on a con-wide scale. Originally, I planned to investigate how cosplayers navigate their identities as cosplayers and as members of mainstream American society and how do these two identities inform each other. I sought to understand cosplayer’s identities as laborers within their cosplay groups. Using ethnographic research methods, I interviewed eleven participants and conducted participant observations.

THREE QUESTIONS • Did the USA originate the idea of costuming? • Did Japan get the idea of fannish costuming from the USA? • When did the term cosplay become a general term for costuming among Western anime fans and when did it spread beyond anime circles? PUBLIC AND PERSONAL PURPOSE • PUBLIC PURPOSE: when costumes or masks are worn and characters assumed as part of a religious or social ritual controlled and validated by a community of interest • PERSONAL PURPOSE: when costumes or masks are worn and characters assumed as a personal choice or mode of expression Blurred lines occur as modern costumers invest their hobby with the significance of ancient ritual - festival times, special meeting places, battles and honours, the creation of artworks... • Never Be Afraid to Say, I Cosplay! Come Join Us at Club Cosplay—A Spa-Con, Cosplay, “Night-Club” Event Come Make This
Never be afraid to say, I Cosplay! Come join us at Club Cosplay—A Spa-Con, Cosplay, “Night-Club” Event Come make this the “baddest” Cosplay Nerd Event Ever! In no way does Geek culture run short of complex story lines in which you can immerse yourself via the art of cosplay. If you or your friends have a passion for cosplay, come experience Spa-Con’s brand of “cos-topia.” It’s a place where you can truly see and be seen in your super-secret (or not so secret) innermost, heart’s desire alter ego. Join us for a night to honor the Nerd in all of us; and free your creative expression in a fun and safe environment! It’s all about being spectacular-spectacular! For Nerds By Nerds—This Club's For You! Club Cosplay is an “Anti-Club”—it’s a nightclub atmosphere for people who want to have a good time but don't enjoy the run of the mill club experience. It’s a place where harassment, body shaming and snobbery are drop-kicked out of the window in favor of positive interaction, artistic expression and community experience! It’s a NERDsafe Event—what does that mean?! It’s a code (more like guidelines really) that stops the social stigmas, hierarchies and hostility of the typical club experience. We provide an environment where the un-cool are Coo-EL, the rejects are resplendent, and the hottest thing on the dance floor is a creative mind! To the uninitiated, cosplay can seem like little more than a glorified costume party, a dress parade at the wrong time of the year—it’s not Halloween! Let me explain, where a costume party ensemble is picked simply to amuse, many cosplayers feel a deeper connection with their chosen character that elevates the experience from mere dress-up to a more profound experience.

Sometimes people are miscast in life. They may appear to be dentists or clerks, but deep down they are actually fierce swordsmen or goddesses with devastating sex appeal. • Findings from a Psychological Survey of Cosplay and Costume Wear Robin S
Rosenberg, Robin S. and Andrea M .Letamendi, Expressions of Fandom Expressions of Fandom: Findings from a Psychological Survey of Cosplay and Costume Wear Robin S. Rosenberg and Andrea M. Letamendi Cosplay, short for 'costume-play', is the modern practice of wearing costumes, props, and accessories to represent a character. Typically, cosplay is the extension of a person’s fandom for the character or genre, such as science fiction and fantasy, anime and manga, comic books, and other creative media. The purposes of cosplaying can vary, but include the expression of adoration of the character, enjoying attention or approval from audiences/peers, and experiencing the creative process of the costume construction. Therefore, cosplay can extend to clothing design, fabrication, make-up, prop making, and other skills involved in creating costumes. The practice of cosplay spans a vast geographical area, as can be demonstrated at large national and international fan conventions and events such as Comic-Con International, Worldcon, World Cosplay Summit, Katsu Con, and Dragon*Con. However, little is known about the psychological motivations, influences, and commonalities among cosplayers, or even whether there are any commonalities beyond the superficials ones – wearing costumes and attending conventions. The act of cosplaying and all that goes into it invites questions about the psychological motivations and experiences of cosplayers, ranging from why cosplayers choose to dress up as a character, how they feel while in costume, to whether wearing a mask makes them feel different. In fact, previous psychological research has shown that wearing a mask can shift people’s experience of themselves and their behavior.

  • The Cultural Dynamic of Doujinshi and Cosplay: Local Anime Fandom in Japan, USA and Europe
. Volume 10, Issue 1 May 2013 The cultural dynamic of doujinshi and cosplay: Local anime fandom in Japan, USA and Europe Nicolle Lamerichs Maastricht University, Netherlands Abstract: Japanese popular culture unifies fans from different countries and backgrounds. Its rich participatory culture is beyond any other and flourishes around comics (manga), animation (anime), games and music. Japanese storytelling showcases elaborate story worlds whose characters are branded on many products. The sub genres of Japanese pop-culture and the lingua franca of their audiences shape Western fandom. In this article, I scrutinize the global dynamic of manga. I specifically focus on the creation of fan manga (‘doujinshi’) and dress- up (‘cosplay’) as two migratory fan practices. The form and content of fan works, and the organizational structure behind them, varies intensely per country. If manga is an international language and style, where is its international fan identity located? In this article, I explore this uncharted territory through ethnographic views of diverse Western and Japanese fan sites where these creative practices emerge. This ethnographic overview is thus concerned with the heterogeneous make-up and social protocols of anime fandom. Keywords: Anime fandom, doujinshi, cosplay, conventions, ethnography Introduction Japan’s global and exotic identity is historically rooted. In the nineteenth century, Euro- Americans performed their fascination for the island through ‘Orientalism’ in Western impressionist art, Zen gardens and architecture (Napier, 2007; Said, 1978). When World War II penetrated this culturally rich image, the fascination for Japan became more ambivalent, characterized by both fear and curiosity. By now, the country’s global identity, which lingers between East and West, inspires Western corporate businesses, art and media as it represents a mixture of spiritual traditions, strong labour and family morals, as well as an advanced technocapitalist model (Ivy, 1995; Wolferen, 1995).
