TEAM TOAN AUTONOMY We have the confidence to use our initiative and take

TEAM TOAN MASTERY We have high aspirations and the urge to get better, to become the best that we can be. Message from the Headteacher

Welcome to The Oldham Academy North!

Starting a new school is an exciting time. At TOAN we pride ourselves on making sure you have as much information as possible, so that your transition journey can be positive and smooth.

As an Academy, we live by our mission statement and our values and we expect that all of our students do too. We want all students to be successful in the competitive and challenging world and we believe that every student is able to achieve great outcomes, particularly in a range of subjects that will help you throughout your life.

It may sound a very long way off but your GCSE exams are less than 1000 days away from the day you start with us in September – we want to make sure every single one of these helps you on your journey and we will do our very best to make sure you are extremely successful when you leave us. Our Values of Trust, Endurance, Autonomy and Mastery will help you to understand how and why we do the things we do.

We Trust you to do the right thing, whether this is home learning or telling the truth, following our habits or being a great member of the TEAM.

We show Endurance always, in all ways. We know that life is hard sometimes and we will support you with as much as we can but endurance is about how you respond and react to situations when the going gets tough! You can show this in your class work, a project you are working on, getting to school on time, every day – even in deepest, darkest winter or even how you approach tough situations.

Throughout your 1000 days with us, you will need to show a level of Autonomy, this means showing your own initiative to get the job done; not necessarily following your peers or what social media tells us to do. Be unique – be you!

We also want to make sure that you achieve Mastery in everything that you do. Professionals spend hours and hours practising their skills and talents; you’ve already been a scholar for 1200 days through your primary education, just imagine how amazing you could be in another 1000 days? If you aren’t great at something now, let’s start practising!

Together, as a TEAM, with your parents/carers, we will help you to be very successful in all aspects of your life. We hope that you are looking forward to getting started, as much as we are looking forward to starting your journey with you. My door is always open for you to come and have a chat and say hello. I look forward to meeting you and your family.

Best wishes,

Rachael Hallam Headteacher

www.theoldhamacademynorth.e-act.org.uk Welcome year 6 students & parents

On behalf of myself, the year 7 form tutors and the pastoral team, I would like to welcome you to our school.

Year 7 is an important year for you – you will establish all the good learning habits that will lead you to success throughout your school journey with us. It is my job and the job of every member of staff to make sure that you make the best possible start.

In this booklet, you will find lots of practical information about how to get ready for September as well as lots of information about our values and expectations of all students. Our recently published Ofsted report highlights how our students benefit from the high expectations of the school and that our students know that we want the best for them. As you join our school community, you will find that we want the best for you too and our high standards are part of our ambition for you.

Please read the booklet carefully – if you or your parents or carers have any questions, you can send them to me at [email protected].

I know that this is a challenging time but want to reassure you that a dedicated team of staff are working hard to make your transition to secondary school as successful as possible. It is normal to feel nervous about starting a new school but I want you to know that we will do everything we can to help you feel reassured and confident when you join us.

I am looking forward to meeting you, Miss Smith Senior Leadership Team

The Headteacher is the final arbiter of what is acceptable in terms of personal appearance at The Oldham Academy North. An Anti-Bullying Academy

Bullying can occur in all walks of life and we must not tolerate it in any way. It is the responsibility of everyone to report bullying in any of its forms so that it can be dealt with immediately.

Bullying is defined as deliberately hurtful behaviour, repeated over a period of time, where it is difficult for those being bullied to defend themselves.

The main types of bullying are:

• Emotional: Being unfriendly, excluding from friendship groups, tormenting (E.g. hiding a planner, taking someone’s pencil case.) • Verbal: Name calling, sarcasm, spreading rumours, teasing • Physical: Pushing, kicking, hitting or any use of violence or threats. Unwanted physical contact or very personal comments • Racial: Racial taunts or graffiti • Cyber: All areas of the internet such as social media, e-mail & chat room misuse. Mobile phone threats by text messaging, calls, apps, or misuse of camera and video.

If you are being bullied in anyway or are worried about somebody else who is being bullied you must tell somebody.

You can tell:

• Your Parents/Carers or another adult • Any member of the academy staff (whether they teach you or not) • A friend who can then speak to an adult on your behalf

The academy takes bullying very seriously. Students and Parents should be assured that they will be supported when bullying is reported.

Bullying, weapons and offensive behaviour will not be tolerated at The Oldham Academy North

Pupils say that there is very little bullying. Pupils can be themselves. Pupils with different lifestyles are not marginalised. Teachers are quick to spot and deal with any signs of bullying, before it gets out of hand. Form Time and the School Day

You will each be part of a year 7 tutor group with your own form tutor who you will see every day. Your form tutor will take care of you when you start school and guide you throughout the year. Because they see you twice each day for registration, form time activities and reading, your form tutor will be the teacher who knows you best. They are the person to go to if you need help or advice and they are the point of contact if your parents or carers have any questions or Mrs M Sayers concerns. PSHE Lead teacher Each Monday morning, your form tutor will be your teacher your for weekly PSHE session. Miss Sayers, our PSHE lead teacher, explains what we do and why it is important.

PSHE is an important aspect of The Oldham Academy North’s challenging and inspiring curriculum as it helps you to gain an understanding of how to be responsible for your own well being. Through PSHE lessons we also teach you how to access support if you need it and how to apply our values of Trust, Endurance, Autonomy and Mastery in the wider community. The focus of PSHE in Year 7 is initially based around helping you with the transition from Primary to Secondary school and what it means to be a pupil of The Oldham Academy North. As you progress through the year PSHE lessons focus on the following topics: how to look after your health and wellbeing; financial decision-making and gaining knowledge of different financial choices that are made throughout a person’s life and the qualities of meaningful and healthy relationships.

There are many extra-curricular opportunities linked to PSHE at the academy such as: PSHE Ambassadors, LGBT+ Club and various trips and visits from organisations that develop your knowledge and understanding.

Getting to school and getting home.

A number of buses come from the centre of Oldham to stops close to the academy – you can plan your journey and find details of buses and times at Transport for , https://wwww.my.tfgm.com

If you need to drive your child to school, we would ask you to be considerate of our neighbours in the streets and houses by the school.

Drop off: Enter the school site through the double gates. At the bottom of the slope is a large turning circle for use by parents. This is the safest place to drop a child – they can then walk to the student entrance without any need to cross a road or walk along one.

Pick up: Please use the turning circle as used in the morning drop. You may wait there for your child. You may have to queue briefly to exit but this is the safest place from which to make a pick up. We are very lucky to have a facility which is not available in many schools.

The safety of our students is of paramount importance to us. Please do not park on Broadway. Broadway is a very busy road and it presents a danger to park there. The road has double yellow lines for this reason. Please do not park on side streets – these are residential areas and residents need to be able to access their homes and drives. Food and Drink

Breakfast Each school day, we provide a free breakfast which is available to all our students. This includes toast, bagels, cereal, milk and fruit juice, which are served from 7.30am in the academy restaurant.

Morning break time Snacks are available to purchase at the academy restaurant during break time – this can include toast, bagels, wraps and sandwiches as well as drinks.

Lunchtime At lunchtime, the academy canteen staff operate a number of food stations. Hot meals are available in the restaurant, there is a curry and rice bar, a pasta bar and a sandwich bar. You are of course wel- come to bring your own packed lunch. There is lots of seating for you to enjoy your lunch with your friends.

Cash payments are not taken at any of the food bars. Students have their own accounts which can be topped up with funds via Parent Pay. At till points, students ‘pay’ by having their thumb read. This re- moves the need to carry money into school.

Please make sure that you are set up on Parent Pay prior to September - details of how to do this will be sent out to you.

Your child may be able to get free school meals if you are in receipt of any of the following:

• Income Support • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 • The guaranteed element of Pension Credit • Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190) • Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit • Universal Credit - your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get)

If you think you are eligible, you can find out more and apply at https://www.gov.uk/apply-free-school-meals/oldham TEAM TOAN TEAM TOAN TEAM TOAN TEAM TOAN TEAM TRUST ENDURANCE AUTONOMY MASTERY TOAN

In addition to the student habits, there are some clear Academy rules which all student’s should follow.

TRUST ENDURANCE AUTONOMY MASTERY Behaviour for Life

At The Oldham Academy North, we recognise and reward students when they consistently display and embody the Academy values of Trust, Endurance, Autonomy and Mastery.

Students, when they exceed the high expectations of the Academy, will be rewarded with a ‘Reward point’ for one of the four TEAMTOAN values. Throughout the year, we will regularly hold reward assemblies where students are ‘drawn from a hat’ to receive rewards based on the reward points they received.

At the end of each term, and the end of the academic year, we have larger rewards for those students who are on the reward point leaderboard in their year group to ensure these students are celebrated.

Other reward categories include: achieving the highest attainment or progress in lessons; 100% attendance; perfect punctuality; zero behaviour points; regularly attending extra- curricular activities and obtaining a first-class honours in the E-ACT passport.

Our prizes include: Love2Shop vouchers; books & stationery; sport equipment (e.g. bikes, footballs, netballs and tennis equipment); experiences (e.g. tickets to see Manchester United); tablets; games consoles & other electronics and reward trips (e.g. Blackpool Pleasure Beach or Chill Factore).

Behaviour for Life

At The Oldham Academy North, we believe in positive discipline where we reward good conduct. However, to ensure a positive learning environment at all times, we have a ‘C1 - C4’ system. This is a gradual consequence system and it applies as follows: Rewarding Achievements

Achievement Stamps Whenever you demonstrate one of our four key values in the classroom or on the corridors a teacher will give you an achievement stamp. These accumulate throughout the year for you to spend in the school reward shop Some of the ways you can get achievement stamps are

Producing an excellent piece of work

Contributing ideas and opinions in a class discussion

Supporting and helping your peers

Modelling the highest standards of behaviour

Rewards As well as the reward shop there are other ways your hard work and efforts will be recognised such as

Reward assemblies each half term

Additional prizes to be won (e.g. mountain bikes)

Blackpool rewards trip

Positive Postcards positive text messages etc.

Achieve your goals... Over the year your net points accumulate and will be recognised for your success at three special levels. These are:

hen you reach each star stage you will be recognised. Your form tutors will take you through what you need to do to achieve this and help you plan your route to success Attendance Target 97%

We expect 100% punctuality to school and to lessons.

Getting to school on time. Punctuality to school is extremely important in making sure that you have a positive start to the day. If you are late, you will miss important form time learning and information. Arriving late is stressful and not good for your well being. Arriving at school in good time allows you to chat to your friends and grab some free breakfast in the restaurant before heading to your form room. Being on time gives you a great start to your day.

Our expectation is that you are in your form room, in your seat with your equipment on the desk by 8.40. If you are late to school after the gates have closed, you will receive a same day 1 hour detention.

Getting to lessons on time. One of the big differences between primary school and secondary school is that students move to different classrooms for different subjects; at the end of an English lesson, you will pack up your equipment and walk to your next lesson. Walking quickly and being on time is very important for your learning.

Arriving late to a lesson means that you disrupt the learning of other students. You will miss important instructions, explanations and learning opportunities. A student who is 5 minutes late to every lesson in a day will miss 30 minutes of learning. In a week, this will 2 1/2 hours. This will affect your progress. Arriving late to a lesson is not good for your well being - your teacher will challenge you about your lateness. Arriving late is stressful - it may result in a situation where you do not fully understand the work. Being on time means that you make a positive start to each lesson.

At the academy, a bell rings at the end of one lesson and students have 4 minutes to get to their next class, sit down and put equipment on the desk. If a student is late after the 2nd bell, the teacher records the number of minutes late in the register. At the end of the week, these minutes are added together and you will complete a detention for the total number of minutes late after school on Friday. 3 2 1
