But the Trans-Atlantic slave trade would soon become a vast empire connecting three continents. Through stories of individuals caught in its web, like a ten-year-old girl named Priscilla who was transported from Sierra Leone to South Carolina in the mid-18th century, we trace the emergence of plantation slavery in the American South. The late 18th century saw a global explosion of freedom movements, and The Black Atlantic examines what that Era of Revolutions-American, French and Haitian-would mean for African Americans, and for slavery in America. TVPG 2pm African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross. CC #102 The Age of Slavery (1800-1860). The Age of Slavery illustrates how black changed dramatically in the aftermath of the American Revolution. For free black people in places like Philadelphia, these years were a time of tremendous opportunity. But for most African Americans, this era represented a new nadir. King Cotton fueled the rapid expansion of slavery into new territories, and a Second Middle Passage forcibly relocated African Americans from the Upper South into the Deep South. Yet as slavery intensified, so did resistance. From individual acts to mass rebellions, African Americans demonstrated their determination to undermine and ultimately eradicate slavery in every state in the nation. Courageous individuals, such as Harriet Tubman, Richard Allen and Frederick Douglass, played a crucial role in forcing the issue of slavery to the forefront of national politics, helping to create the momentum that would eventually bring the country to war. CC One-hundred and fifty-one years after Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903) designed New York City's Central Park with Calvert Vaux, it remains an undisputed haven of tranquility amid one of the largest, tallest and most unnatural places in the world. OLMSTED AND AMERICA'S URBAN PARKS, narrated by actress Kerry Washington, examines the visionary urban planner and landscape architect's impact on the development of America's first great city parks in the late 19th century. With incredible foresight, Olmsted brought nourishing green spaces to New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Atlanta, Louisville and dozens of other U.S. cities. Throughout his working life, Olmsted and his firm carried out more than 500 commissions, including nearly 100 public parks. He believed parks should serve as vital democratic spaces, where citizens from all walks of life could converge and feel restored. Prior to officially committing to landscape architecture, Olmsted worked as a New York Times correspondent to the Confederate states, the manager of a California gold mine and General Secretary of the United States Sanitary Commission during the Civil War. Olmsted, a workaholic by today's standards, devoted the latter half of his life to creating green spaces for overworked city dwellers. John and D-Lo have a community center and church called a??Light of the Village. In their 15 years serving the people of Alabama Village and the surrounding communities they have buried more than 30 of the young people who have been through their program due to gun violence. This is a violent, desperately poor community surrounded by drugs, crime, and few legitimate work opportunities. And yet with the suthe port of Light of the Village program people like Jesse Darrington have a chance at escaping the cycles of crime and violence. The Good Road team follows the life of Jesse as he makes his way through his senior year of high school and out of Alabama Village. Along the way, they meet Da'Cino Dees. Da'Cino is a role model for Jesse who explains what it's like to grow up in "The Village" and why it's important for Jesse to leave. The road out wasn't easy for Jesse though and along the way he loses the most important person in his life, his mother, to the same violence he is trying to escape. Craig and Earl are genuinely worried about what will happen to Jesse during this most trying time. Then, Jesse and the other youth of Light of the Village show true compassion by turning their attention to those even less fortunate than they are. They volunteer and then raise money for a mission trip doing philanthropic work in the poor Mexican border-town of Ciudad a??Juareza??. This is a big moment for Jesse, and after returning home, and with the support of Da'Cino, John, and Delores, Jesse becomes the first in his family to graduate High School, and take the first real steps towards a college education. TVG 4:30 The Good Road. CC #104 Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania: Islands of Isolation. In this episode, Earl and Craig are back with the BRCK team as they bring WiFi to several small, remote Islands in the Zanzibar Archipelago. After an overnight journey from Kenya on an ancient wooden sailboat the The Good Road and BRCK teams land on a sandy beach at dawn where they off-load their supplies (and motorcycles). They have arrived on Pemba Island. After setting up camp, they make for a lighthouse at the highest point on the island. The BRCK team is combining technology it has created to support a small weather station to be installed here. It is to provide local fishermen with hyper-local up to the minute weather information that most people take for granted. Craig and Earl talk to the lighthouse caretaker and he explains how weather information in any ocean-faring effort is critical for commerce and can even save lives. Next, they head off to an even smaller, more remote Island several hours sail from Pemba. Once there, BRCK sets up an internet access point for a community with no previous internet access. In addition, they provide the one local school with a BRCK developed ruggedized tablet education system. This has the potential to solve a myriad of problems often found in emerging economy classrooms and the children at the school take to it immediately. Before returning to Pemba, the BRCK and Good Road teams overcome a number of obstacles (one of which is a lack of generator fuel!) to connect a Title 1 school in Nashville to the school on Kakota via the internet. Youth from an underprivileged American school and a remote Tanzanian school get to connect to each other in a way not possible without technology. After returning to Pemba, the team enjoys one more sunset together while discussing the implications and importance of bringing the Internet to places like Pemba and Kakota. TVG 5am On Story. TV14 7pm The Good Road. CC #105 Bangkok, Thailand: The Big House.... of Blessing. The Good Road returns to Craig and Earl's hometown of Bangkok and end up in the 2nd largest maximum-security prison in all of Thailand. Luckily, it's by invitation. They receive a rare tour of the grounds as well as the cells before speaking to a Thai prisoner about what daily life is like in a Thai prison. Afterwards, they discover, amongst other things, a unique approach to vocational training and pre-release development at the prison. Access to Klong Prem prison is limited, especially for video crews from the West. But, Craig's dad, Jack Martin, worked in Thai prisons for decades. He started a prison ministry that helped prepare prisoners for life after prison. The program helped Jack establish friendships that would pay off for generations. Craig and Earl connect with Jack's mentee, Acharn Soonthorn, who has furthered the work and expanded the program- even inspiring prison officials to create similar, but secular, programs of their own. After reconnecting, Mr. Soonthorn takes Craig and Earl on a tour of the organization he helped to create around the prison ministry, the House of Blessing. It is a transitional facility that Soonthorn directs that helps recently released prisoners and the families of prisoners as they deal with the many problems and stages of incarceration in Thailand. The facility also supports ex-prisoners as they cope with the difference between life inside and outside of prison. House of Blessing provides education, childcare and continued vocational programs for those prisoners and ex-prisoners who most need it. Viewers will hear the redemptive stories of ex-convicts often ignored or rejected in Thai society because of their criminal past. This episode explores the benefits of a unique partnership between the primarily Buddhist bureaucrats of the Thai government and the Christian ministry started by Craig's father. TVG 7:30 The Good Road. CC #106 Nairobi, Kenya: The Power of Story. In this episode, The Good Road explores the impact storytelling can have on the youth of underprivileged communities in Nairobi, Kenya. Craig and Earl hear the story of a leading technologist and designer, Mark Kamau (recently featured in National Geographic Magazine). Mark grew up in Matheri Slum in Nairobi but through a surprising series of events, he was able to escape the crime and poverty surrounding him and build a new life. But Mark wasn't content with keeping his new life for himself. He takes Craig and Earl back to Matheri to meet some of his old friends and to meet some of the youth he mentors. Mark dreams of everyone in Matheri getting the same opportunities he had and his story acts as a model for that next generation to rise above their circumstances. In another part of the city Craig and Earl then meet Ken Oloo, one of the founders of Filamujuani. Filamujuani's primary goal is to support underprivileged young people by training them how to become professionals in the TV and Film industry. Much like Mark, Ken also grew up in the slums and his story shows that next generation what is possible. For many, storytelling is a means of survival in Nairobi. And by helping people from the slums tell their own stories, Ken is giving a whole new generation a voice. One example of this is Ijawa Obeid. The Good Road meets her on the production set of the popular East African TV comedy One in a Million (kind of the Kenyan equivalent of The Beverly Hillbillies). Ijawa works as the Assistant Director for the show and many of the show's crew members came up through Ken's program. Ijawa invites Craig and Earl to her home in the Kibera slums where the team gets to hear what her daily life is like before hearing the amazing story of her adopted son, whom Ijawa literally rescued from exposure in the streets of Kibera. CC #2057 TVRE 5:30 Story in the Public Square. CC #501 Story in the Public Square is a weekly, public affairs show designed to study, celebrate, and tell stories that matter. The show is inspired by the power of stories to shape public understanding of important issues. For example, Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel, "Uncle Tom's Cabin," shined a crucial light on the violence and inhumanity of American slavery, fueled the abolition movement, and inspired Abraham Lincoln, upon meeting the author, to say "So you're the little woman who wrote the book that made this great war." Narrative is no less important today-though the vehicles for dissemination are much more diverse. From a great novel to a film, a song, or even a Tweet, stories still very much impact the way the American public looks at issues. Our show turns a critical eye to these stories and their tellers. CC #102 Our cameras continue to follow the wildlife dramas in Yellowstone, and Spring brings many new challenges. While the brutal cold temperatures and deep snow of winter have gone, the weather is still erratic and there's the impending danger of the Thaw. When temperatures are high enough to melt the snowpack, millions of tonnes of water will cascade down the mountain, bulldozing everything in its path. Wildlife cameraman Jeff Hogan discovers a nest of Great Gray owls. There are three chicks, but one is a runt, significantly smaller than its siblings and at risk of starvation. And when the worst storms for years hit the Beartooth Mountains, Jeff wonders whether it can hang on. Down on the Snake River the family of beavers is busy making the most of the Spring vegetation. Infra red cameras give Jeff and host Kirk Johnson a secret view of life inside the lodge, as the beavers squabble over food. Kirk also dons a dry suit to head underwater to admire the engineering skills of these rodents. Massive boulders and branches are there to strengthen their dams, but will they be enough to withstand the Thaw. When the torrent of water begins to hit, Kirk joins a hydrologist to help measure the water flow in the rivers and work out how this year's weather has affected the Thaw. And bear expert Casey Anderson follows a mother grizzly and her cubs - and explains that the biggest dangers come not from other predators, but surprisingly from their own kind. TVPG 12pm Wild Weather. CC Watch an innovative documentary that illustrates how weather works by performing brave, ambitious (even unlikely) experiments that show how nature transforms simple ingredients like wind, water and temperature into something spectacular and powerful. TVG 1pm African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross. CC #103 Into The Fire (1861-1896). Into the Fire examines the most tumultuous and consequential period in African American history: the Civil War and the end of slavery, and Reconstruction's thrilling but tragically brief "moment in the sun." From the beginning, African Americans were agents of their own liberation, forcing the Union to confront the issue of slavery by fleeing the plantations and taking up arms to serve with honor in the United States Colored Troops. After Emancipation, African Americans sought to realize the promise of freedom-rebuilding families shattered by slavery; demanding economic, political and civil rights; even winning elected office. Just a few years later, however, an intransigent South mounted a swift and vicious campaign of terror to restore white supremacy and roll back African American rights. Yet the achievements of Reconstruction would remain very much alive in the collective memory of the African American community. TVPG 2pm Latino Americans. CC #102 Empire of Dreams. CC #103 It's summer in Yellowstone, and with soaring temperatures and drought comes the risk of wildfires. All the water from 'The Thaw' has flowed away and a lack of rain has left the ground tinder dry. When a major blaze breaks out in the Beartooth Mountains, wildlife cameraman Jeff Hogan scrambles a team to see if the family of Great Gray Owls he's been following all year has survived. The beaver family now has three young kits. But Jeff is shocked when their mother suddenly moves them out of the family home. It's a risky journey over dams and upriver and not something he's ever witnessed before. Meanwhile the Pinnacle Peak pack of wolves near Jackson also has young and in a year that's been tough for Yellowstone's top predator, wildlife photographer Charlie Hamilton James unravels why this pack is doing better than most. Up in the Gallatin Mountains are two orphaned young grizzlies. Host Kirk Johnson joins bear expert Casey Anderson to witness the relationship between man and bear on ranch land, where there's a balance of mutual tolerance. But with no mum alive to teach them, these yearlings are vulnerable and Casey is worried. As our climate changes, one of the biggest signs in Yellowstone is the effect on pikas. These alpine mammals rely on the cold high up in the mountains. But as temperatures slowly increase, the pikas are struggling. Kirk meets a scientist studying them to see what's going to happen when there's nowhere left to go but the sky. TVPG 12pm Nature. CC #3703 Undercover in the Jungle. TVRE 6pm By One Vote: Woman Suffrage in the South. CC When Tennessee legislator Harry T. Burn followed his mother's advice and cast his fateful vote to ratify the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, he ensured the state would forever be associated with bestowing the right to vote, a fundamental civil right, on U.S. women. But the short story of this vote belies the irony of this state and region's late and reluctant participation in the suffrage effort. The full story of Burn's vote and the Southern suffrage movement is one of compromises, abandoned ideals and promises broken; as well as deep racial and gender divisions in the struggle for political power. Tennessee's suffrage journey is part of the long aftermath of the Civil War in which women were no longer satisfied to be spectators in political processes nor to be relegated to second-class citizenship. By One Vote: Woman Suffrage in the South examines the tactics and attitudes of Tennessee and Southern suffragists, exploring how the shadow of the Confederacy and values of the "Lost Cause" shaped the fight for full female enfranchisement. Narrated by Rosanne Cash, NPT's original documentary chronicles the events leading up to the turbulent, nail-biting showdown of August 1920. TVPG 7pm Vote: American Experience. CC #3209 Part One. CHEF DARREN: THE CHALLENGE OF PROFOUND DEAFNESS explores the impact of the family members and teachers who refused to let Darren's challenges keep him from communicating and documents how, with determination, Darren ultimately learned to speak and became a father, a teacher and the chef of his own trend-setting Los Angeles restaurant. As a child, Darren attended classes and therapy sessions at noted speech pathologist Helen Beebe's clinic in Easton, Pennsylvania. Despite the intensive work, Darren showed little progress in developing language skills. In the film, Darren and his family recount the pivotal period when Darren's work with one therapist at the clinic clicked, and he began to speak and express himself. After attending and graduating from public school with hearing children, Darren was left with the question of what to do next. A lifelong passion for cooking led Darren to earn his degree at the Culinary Institute of America in New York, and later, to open a successful restaurant in Southern California. Today, working with the organization No Limits for Deaf Children, Darren leads hands-on cooking classes for hearing-impaired kids that help empower his students. But just how will these scientists accomplish this? The half-hour documentary OSIRIS-REX: COUNTDOWN TO LAUNCH follows a multi-generational team of scientists and engineers as they struggle to design, construct, and deliver on time the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft and its components to NASA in anticipation of its September 2016 launch from Cape Canaveral. OSIRIS-REx is expected to travel more than 400 million miles to rendezvous with an asteroid named Bennu, whose diameter is less than half a mile. It will then use its suite of instruments to find the perfect place to gather a sample from the asteroid's surface, traveling another 400 million miles and a total of six years to bring that sample back to Earth. NASA's OSIRIS-REx Asteroid Sample Return Mission is a 14-year, one billion dollar study aimed at learning more about one of the most fascinating and potentially hazardous asteroids in the solar system - before it potentially collides with Earth more than 150 years from now. CC #107 Mbale, Uganda: Five Years If You're Lucky. There are so many heroes in the world of philanthropy and The Good Road crew learns so much from these heroes. In this episode, Earl Bridges and Craig Martin meet two such heroes in the eastern part of Uganda. Their journey to find them begins in a Matatu that takes them through the Ugandan countryside to a series of geographic gems like the "source of the Nile". But after a long journey they arrive at their true destination- the Mbale Regional Referral Hospital. Once there, they meet up with an amazing couple, Kathy Bourgoine and Adam Hewitt-Smith, and their daughters Eseld and Lowenna. Despite the fact that Kathy (a neonatologist) and Adam (an anesthesiologist) could be crushing it back in London, UK where they are from, they have decided to live and work in this remote city of Uganda not making a dime from their labors. And contrary to what you might think, they're not doing it for Jesus. They're both self-avowed atheists who are simply doing it for the people whose lives they change. They are do-gooders because doing good is the right thing to do. Kathy's work in the NICU and Adam's work in the hospital is saving lives, but the work is hard and stressful and takes its toll on their children. Earl and Craig explore Kathy and Adam's inspiring and at times heartbreaking world and discover all kinds of bizarre, funny, and interesting Ugandan cultural details along the way. TVG 7:30 The Good Road. CC #108 Yangon, Myanmar: Punk Rock Buddha. This episode finds Earl and Craig back on the road in Southeast Asia in the former capital of one of the most politically controversial countries in the region, Myanmar. War, genocide, and conflict have raged in this country dominated by ethnic struggle for decades. But beyond the headlines there are powerful stories of unexpected heroes like Burmese punk rocker Kyaw Thu Win or Kyaw Kyaw (pronounced Joe Joe). Based out of Yangon, Kyaw Kyaw fronts a punk rock band called The Rebel Riot. But when he's not performing under a bridge with rented instruments he and his band are working hard to help street kids through food distributions and education/reading projects. He and his punk rock friends run the local chapter of Food not Bombs in their effort to do something about the people caught in the cracks of global conflict. What starts as an "off the beaten path" glimpse of the city of Yangon on the colonial era circular train turns into an exciting romp around one of the most interesting cities in the world. Craig and Earl tag along with Kyaw Kyaw and crew for a slice of life experience from tea-houses, and DIY screen printing co-ops, to Pirate Bars and Punk Shops. Only to see that the punks of Yangon find real meaning in helping communities in need. Do- gooders get a first-hand look at The Rebel Riot's philanthropic work from downtown Yangon to semi-legal villages on the outskirts of the city only reachable by ferry. Craig and Earl also reconnect with an old friend and Burmese refugee Hnin Hnin Pyne. Her unique perspective on the city and love of fish soup provides just the insight they need. Kyaw Kyaw and his bandmates cap off the episode by treating Craig, Earl and the crew to a world of beauty, wonder and Buddhist history at the Golden Rock Temple hours outside of Yangon. The highlight is a pagoda built on a rock that seemingly hovers at the edge of a cliff hanging atop the Kyaiktiyo Hill in Mon State. TVG 8pm Local, USA. At the turn of the 20th century, a steady stream of African Americans left the South, fleeing the threat of racial violence, and searching for better opportunities in the North and the West. Leaders like Ida B. Wells, W.E.B. Du Bois, Booker T. Washington and Marcus Garvey organized, offering vastly different strategies to further black empowerment and equality. Yet successful black institutions and individuals were always at risk. At the same time, the ascendance of black arts and culture showed that a community with a strong identity and sense of pride was taking hold in spite of Jim Crow. Now, the discovery of new bones in a Moroccan cliff face is reopening the investigation into this epic beast. What did it feed on and how? Why did it grow so big? We follow the paleontologists who are reconstructing this terrifying carnivore piece by piece, revealing a 53- foot-long behemoth with a huge dorsal sail, enormous, scimitar-like claws, and massive superjaws, tapered toward the front like a crocodile, hosting an army of teeth. It is a painstaking puzzle, and it is missing many of its pieces. This 23-pound block, dug up on the northern Oregon coast in the late 1930s, seems to have been deliberately carved with strange markings. For centuries, ships carried beeswax on trade routes from the Far East to the American Pacific Coast. Could this beeswax have been cargo on a legendary ship that foundered more then 300 years ago? And what do those odd markings mean? HISTORY DETECTIVES host Elyse Luray goes to the Bee Lab at Oregon State University to decipher where the beeswax came from and visits an archaeologist in Olympia, Washington, to track which ship may have brought it to the Oregon coast. Narrative is no less important today-though the vehicles for dissemination are much more diverse. From a great novel to a film, a song, or even a Tweet, stories still very much impact the way the American public looks at issues. Our show turns a critical eye to these stories and their tellers. TVPG 3pm African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross. CC #105 Rise! (1940-1968). Rise! examines the long road to civil rights, when the deep contradictions in American society finally became unsustainable. Beginning in World War II, African Americans who helped fight fascism abroad came home to face the same old racial violence. But this time, mass media-from print to radio and TV-broadcast that injustice to the world, planting seeds of resistance. And the success of black entrepreneurs and entertainers fueled African American hopes and dreams. In December 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man on a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama, heralding the dawn of a new movement of quiet resistance, with the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as its public face. Before long, masses of African Americans practiced this nonviolent approach at great personal risk to integrate public schools, lunch counters and more. As the civil rights movement scored one historic victory after another, non-violence was still all too often met with violence-until finally, enough was enough. By 1968, Dr. King, the apostle of non-violence, would be assassinated, unleashing a new call for "Black Power" across the country. TVPG 4pm DW News. CC #2077 TVRE 5:30 Story in the Public Square. CC #503 Story in the Public Square is a weekly, public affairs show designed to study, celebrate, and tell stories that matter. TVRE 6pm 1964: The Fight for a Right. CC By the mid twentieth century, Mississippi's African Americans had suffered from nearly 75 years of slavery by another name - Jim Crow discrimination. In 1964 in Mississippi, people died in an effort to force the state to allow African Americans to exercise their constitutional right to vote. Although, the 50th anniversary of Freedom Summer has passed, the struggle for voting rights is still pertinent. According to the NAACP, states have recently passed the most laws limiting voter participation since Jim Crow. Moreover, these laws also disenfranchise other people of color, the elderly, poor, and disabled. With the 2015 anniversary of the Voting Rights Act as well as the upcoming presidential primaries and general election, voting rights will remain at the forefront of a national debate. With historical footage and interview with Freedom Summer architects and volunteers, as well as present day activists, 1964: THE FIGHT FOR A RIGHT uses Mississippi to explain American voting issues in the last 150 years. From draft dodging to the Dayton Accords, from Monica Lewinsky to a balanced budget, the presidency of William Jefferson Clinton veered between sordid scandal and grand achievement. This film explores the story of an American president who rose from a broken childhood in Arkansas to become one of the most successful politicians in modern American history and one of the most complex and conflicted characters to ever stride across the public stage. It recounts a career full of accomplishment and rife with scandal, a marriage that would make history and create controversy, and a presidency that would define the crucial and transformative period between the fall of the Berlin Wall and 9/11. It follows Clinton across his two terms as he confronted some of the key forces that would shape the future, including partisan political warfare and domestic and international terrorism, and struggled, with uneven success, to define the role of American power in a post-Cold War world. The film features unprecedented access to Clinton insiders including White House Press Secretary Dee Dee Myers, White House Counsel Bernard Nussbaum, White House Chief of Staff Leon Panetta, as well as interviews with foreign leaders, members of the Republican opposition, childhood friends, staffers from Clinton's years as governor of Arkansas, biographers and journalists. "A Necessary War" (December 1941 - December 1942) - After an overview of the Second World War, which engulfed the world from 1939 to 1945 and cost at least 50 million lives, inhabitants of four towns - Mobile, Alabama; Sacramento, California; Waterbury, Connecticut; and Luverne, Minnesota - recall their communities on the eve of the conflict. For them, the events overseas seem far away. Their tranquil lives are shattered by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and America is thrust into the great cataclysm. Along with millions of other young men, Sid Phillips and Willie Rushton of Mobile, Ray Leopold of Waterbury and Walter Thompson and Burnett Miller of Sacramento enter the armed forces. In the Philippines, two Americans, Corporal Glenn Frazier and Sascha Weinzheimer (who was eight years old in 1941), are caught up in the Japanese onslaught there, as American and Filipino forces retreat onto Bataan while thousands of civilians are rounded up and imprisoned in Manila. Back home, 110,000 Japanese Americans along the West Coast are forcibly relocated by the government to internment camps. On the East Coast, German U-boats menace Allied shipping offshore. The United States seems unprepared for this kind of total war. Witnessing all of this is Katharine Phillips of Mobile and Al McIntosh, editor of the Rock County Star Herald in Luverne, who chronicles the travails of every family in town. In June 1942, the Navy manages a victory over the Japanese at the Battle of Midway. In August, American land forces, including Sid Phillips of Mobile, face the Japanese army for the first time at Guadalcanal. Abandoned by their fleet with no sea or air support, the men are under constant attack. After six months, the Americans finally prevail and, in the process, stop Japan's expansion in the Pacific. We uncover the story of our relationship with the skies from our earliest ancestors, through to the birth of the science of astronomy. Our story begins with one of the earliest known creation myths - the Babylonian Enuma Elish. With spectacular CGI animation, we see the clash of the gods Marduk and Tiamat that the Babylonians believed gave birth to the earth and the sky. In this episode we visit the caves of El Castillo in Northern Spain. Deep inside the caves we see some of the earliest cave paintings in the world. Astronomer Phil Plait shows us how the skies could be used to navigate and tell the time, either by observing the phases of the moon, or by tracking the movements of the sun across the horizon. We look at Stonehenge and the Great Pyramid of Giza and see that, as our earliest civilisations developed, we built monuments that enabled us to observe the skies and worship them. We visit Ancient Greece, where the great storytellers Hesiod and Homer were populating the world with gods and monsters. That is until the first philosophers started to look at the world not in terms of individual events that showed the actions of living gods in the sky, but as phenomena that were all part of the patterns of the natural world. As philosophy and early science start to reshape the world from mythological to rational, we are on the cusp of a revolution that gave birth to modern science. TVPG 12pm Ancient Skies. TVG 7pm America's Socialist Experiment. CC Between 1910 and 1960, the people of Milwaukee, Wisc. elected the country's first socialist U.S. Congressman, as well as three socialist mayors. The documentary AMERICA'S SOCIALIST EXPERIMENT recounts both the victories and failures of a unique brand of socialism in this historically conservative city. Widely respected for ending corruption, improving conditions for working people, and cleaning up the environment, the Milwaukee Socialists established the nation's first municipal public housing project, the first workers' compensation law, and an award-winning public health strategy that doubled life expectancy in the city. They also established an extensive public parks system, appointed the country's first director of parks and recreation, and left a legacy of government support for its citizens' quality of life. But their socialist experiment was not without its failures: some programs were too optimistic; others created unintended consequences. Their 40-year rule in Milwaukee - the longest tenure of socialists in office anywhere in America - ended only when their once-radical plans were absorbed and incorporated into the mainstream Democratic platform. Today, both Democrats and Republicans lay claim to parts of their legacy. What can this 20th-century experiment tell us about how socialism works in practice? With renewed debate approaching the 2020 election about what it means to be a socialist in America, the successes and failures of Milwaukee's "Sewer Socialists" are instructive and enlightening for generations who only know socialism as a philosophy or label. In this mini- series, NOVA explores these breakthroughs through three iconic creatures: dogs, birds and dolphins. We'll travel into the spectacularly nuanced noses of dogs and wolves, and ask whether their reliance on different senses has shaped their evolution. We'll see through the eyes of a starling in flight and test the tool-using skills of the smartest of birds, the crow. As we discover how researchers are pushing the animal mind to its limits, we'll uncover surprising similarities to -- and differences from -- the human mind. Today, researchers are discovering that some creatures have mastered skills purportedly restricted to humans. Many are bird brains. Meet a cockatoo with a talent for picking locks; a wild crow on a mission to solve an eight-step puzzle; and a tame raven who can solve a puzzle box so quickly that his performance has to be captured with high-speed photography. Narrative is no less important today-though the vehicles for dissemination are much more diverse. What is it like to be a dog, a shark or a bird? This question is now getting serious attention from scientists who study animal senses. Humans rely on smell, sight, taste, touch and sound; other animals have super-powered versions of these senses, and a few have extra senses we don't have at all. From a dog that seems to use smell to tell time to a dolphin that can "see" with its ears, discover how animals use their senses in ways we humans can barely imagine. But it's not just the senses that are remarkable - it's the brains that process them. NOVA goes into the minds of animals to "see" the world in an entirely new way. TVG 12pm History Detectives. Hundreds of horrified on-lookers arrived just in time to see young men and women jumping from the windows. By the time the fire had burned itself out, 146 people were dead. Less than two years earlier, the workers of the factory had been leaders in an industry-wide strike to protest dismal wages and dangerous working conditions. Despite unlikely support from some of the wealthiest women in the city, including Anne Morgan, most of the workers returned to the their shops without having their demands met. TVRE 6pm Bombs Away: LBJ, Goldwater and the 1964 Campaign That Changed it All. CC Three-year- old Monique Corzilius counts to 10, pulling petals from a daisy. A voice from mission control then counts down as the camera zooms into Monique's dark pupil. An atomic blast and ensuing mushroom cloud consumes the TV screen as President Lyndon Johnson's voice proclaims "We must either love each other, or we must die." This political ad, "Peace Little Girl," aired only once or twice during the 1964 presidential campaign between Lyndon Johnson and Barry Goldwater, but it ushered in a new era of the television attack ad. The 1964 campaign also reshaped the American political landscape in other significant ways. Johnson's "Great Society" and civil rights agendas pushed southern states toward the Republican Party and brought the northeast in line with the Democrats, creating America's contemporary geopolitical map of red and blue states. Barry Goldwater's rift with "the liberal Republican establishment," or "Rockefeller Republicans," served as the basis for his landslide defeat in the general election, but also for the rise of an out-spoken and blossoming conservative movement. Barry Goldwater's presidential campaign also spawned the political career of Ronald Reagan, and inspired future conservative offshoots like social and Christian conservatives as well as the Tea Party. BOMBS AWAY: LBJ, GOLDWATER AND THE 1964 CAMPAIGN THAT CHANGED IT ALL includes interviews with historians and participants in the campaign, including Richard and Doris Kearns Goodwin, Barry Goldwater, Jr., Victor Gold, Joseph Califano, Larry J. Sabato, Professor Robert Mann and Monique Corzilius. TVPG 7pm Clinton: American Experience. CC #102 Part Two.
