Talk on “Corporate Speaking Etiquettes”

Date: 3rd Nov 2017 Venue: Y Block Seminar Hall

A session on ‘Corporate Speaking Etiquettes was conducted for M.Com students on 3rd November2017 between 10.30. to 12.30 p.m. In times of crisis, fear and uncertainty, we need to pay attention to the art of speaking well - the ability, as Charles Darwin put it, for our words, language and way of speaking to become “a kind of machine for grinding general laws out of large collections of fact Whether you are addressing a small group or find yourself behind a podium in front of hundreds, public speaking can be unnerving and downright frightening to some, while seemingly innocuous to others So, what separates the two mind-sets? Mainly, those who struggle with public speaking do so because it is outside of their comfort zone, they lack confidence, or they exhibit a disinterest for the practice altogether. For many, public speaking is outside of their comfort zone. There are many reasons why public speaking skills will help in the professional world. For example, often you work in a small project group. You may have the best idea, or the best approach to solving the problem, but if you can’t communicate it better than the other team members, your idea will not be heard. Focusing on Corporate expectations students was given insight about requirement of effective speaking and they are: Grammar, Vocabulary, Pronunciation, Discourse Management, Interactive Communication and to summarize the program helped the students to overcome inhibition and be participative. The Apple Language Lab

Date: 9th Sept 2017 Venue: Tree Area, VSIT

The students of VSIT were introduced to Apple Mac Lab during this semester. It is an innovative way of teaching English to present generation of tech savvy students. The Language Lab is a language learning software that offers all the features required by teachers for language teaching- learning process. It offers different types of activities such as pronunciation practice, video presentation, audio broadcasting, quiz and exercise. Language laboratory is a teacher-controlled system connected to a number of student consoles, containing a student's system and a headset with a microphone. The objective of a digital language lab is to engage students to actively participate in language learning activities and give more practice than otherwise possible in a traditional classroom environment. Communication involves one’s ability to listen carefully, to comprehend the meaning and to respond in turn with appropriate words and clarity in pronunciation. The four essential skills needed for acquiring communicative proficiency in any language are Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing which this software offers in a clear manner. Disadvantages of language learning in a typical classroom setting are: Inhibition in effective communication, incorrect pronunciation and inability to comprehend the right accent. But with the exposure to this medium of learning English language was a great experience for the students of VSIT. Technology has given creative ideas to enhance teaching and learning skills which teachers of VSIT always believe in and implement it during the course of their teaching . This was an exciting experience for both the teachers and the students. Guest Lecture on Print Media

Date: 13th Sept 2017 Venue: Y Block Seminar Hall, VSIT

BMM of VSIT organised a Guest Lecture by Mr. Shridhar Ramakrishnan Sub- Editor of Times of India on13th September 2017. Mr. Shridhar spoke about the important role print media has played in changing our society and contrary to popular belief print media will continue to have a greater impact in the political. economic and social scenario. The invention of new technologies and mixing up professionalism with it, make the Indian media ready to accept and face any kind of challenge from the modernized world. Both print and electronic media always try to cope up with the constraints coming from the changes through liberalization and globalization. Nowadays, a growing tendency between print and electronic media, to compete with each other, comes in public. Print media is changing gradually. The social responsibilities that were preserved in the earlier times are eroding to some extent. Print media is still a strong medium for information and communication. It is one of the “indispensable” tools of society that helps every individual to communicate and correspond to each other. It is primarily used as a tool for getting news and information, advertising, marketing campaigns, entertainment, expression and criticism, art and talents, and other forms of human interaction. He also discussed briefly about the layout of a newspaper and the negative aspects of print media. The students asked him pertinent questions and he enjoyed interacting with them. This event was attended by both the First year and Second year students of BMM. Report by: Ms. Anindita Banerji
