JOURNALISTS OF THE NATIONAL PRESS ARE REQUESTED TO OBTAIN CLEARANCE BEFORE PUBLICATION SO THAT ANY FURTHER DETAILS TO AID A MORE GENERAL READERSHIP CAN BE INCLUDED. DETAILS OF HRA DIRECTORS AND OFFICERS ARE LISTED IN THE MEMBERS’ HANDBOOK ON THE MEMBERS’ SECTION OF THE HRA WEBSITE SIDELINES AND BROADLINES ARE AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOADING ON THE HRA WEBSITE MEMBERS’ PAGES 1/ CARITAS EXPRESS – SATURDAY 21 MAY – VATICAN CITY TO ORVIETO. Thanks to the initiative of His Excellency Tim Fischer, Australian Ambassador to the Holy See, at 9.30 am / 10 am on Saturday 21 May, a steam train will pull out of the Vatican City Station in the Pope’s private garden, through large gates in the city wall, over a high viaduct to join the Italian railway system to Orte where there will be a change of engines for the onward journey to Orvieto, arriving at about 12.30 pm. The funicular will take passengers to the high town where there are several restaurants available for lunch. At 16.00 hours (4pm) there will be an official welcome in front of the cathedral. The train will then depart for Orvieto at around 18.00 hours for Rome Termini Station, due to arrive at approximately 19.45. The return fare will be €60 each, plus an administration charge of €5 to cover bank charges, etc. For legal reasons, passengers are required to be members or “Friends” of FEDECRAIL, the European Federation of Museum and Tourist Railways, costing €25 per person (or in the case of married couples, per couple). If you wish to come, please let me know as soon as possible and payment should be made through FEDECRAIL via John Fuller (email: [email protected], tel: 01474 352400). The fare element will be treated as a donation to Caritas Internationalis’ Humanitarian Assistance projects, in partnership with national Caritas responses to natural and manmade disasters throughout the world. It is planned that the heritage carriages will be hauled by locomotive number 685 089 as far as Orte but no guarantee can be given as to traction or timings. However, I think that it will be a great day and will be enjoyed by all. I would ask all those coming to dress (and behave) with decorum. It is quite a privilege to see the Pope’s station, built in 1932 and given to his predecessors by Mussolini . David Morgan 2/ URGENT REQUEST. INFORMATION ON WINE & DINE SERVICES. D.W. 5/ MUTUAL INSURANCE. Paul Koronka and Jeff Moore thank all those at the Crewe Conference for their attention. Should there be further questions please contact Jeff Moore on 01580 752 052 or email [email protected]. Thanks also to those who have returned the questionnaires already. The outstanding ones are awaited with interest. J.M. LEGISLATION. 6/ BRIBERY ACT 2010. Compared with many other countries, our nation is relatively free from corruption. But it has nevertheless been thought timely to modernise the law relating to bribery. The Bribery Act is the result. It comes into force on 1 July next and applies to the whole of the United Kingdom. Section 1 of the Act makes it an offence for a person to offer, promise or give financial or other advantages to another person where the intention is to procure an improper benefit as a consequence. Of particular relevance for members is section 7, which creates an offence which can be committed by a commercial organisation (which expression includes a not-for-profit body) that fails to prevent persons associated with it from committing bribery on its behalf. However it is a defence for the organisation to prove that. in any particular allegation of bribery, it has adequate procedures in place to prevent persons associated with it from committing bribery. It should also be noted that it is not the intention of the Act to criminalise recognised ways of doing bona fide business designed to enhance the image of an organisation (such as the treating of a potential client to a modest meal). The policy behind section 7 is to be governed by six principles required to be addressed by commercial organisations in countering bribery: proportionate procedures; top-level commitment; top- level involvement in bribery prevention; risk assessment; due diligence; communication (including training); and monitoring and review. Given the many subtleties of the legislation, members are recommended to consult the guidance on the Act which has been produced by the Ministry of Justice. This is available only on their website: www.iustice.gov.uk/guidance/docs/bribery-act-2010-guidance.pdf Geoffrey Claydon HERITAGE RAILWAY ASSOCIATION SIDELINES 113 2 of 11 MARKETING. 7/ THE NEW HRA ‘STEAM GUIDE’. Many thanks to those who completed my form that was circulated in February (as mentioned in Sidelines 112). Almost everyone included in the present edition forwarded their updates and several new members have forwarded their details. I have hit a slight delay, the usual problem of not enough time in the day but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. John Crane 8/ BEST OF BRITAIN AND IRELAND. This event was held at the N.E.C. in Birmingham on 16th and 17th of March. The initial impression was that the event was smaller than last years, which was held at Olympia, and although that one had been good for us, some exhibitors had been disappointed. It was perhaps because of this that the first day seemed a little slow but it was almost as if the message got around that this was a good show and contrary to normal practice the second day was a major success. We actually had ‘good quality’ people queuing to speak to us. We were mainly handing out the new Group Travel Guide which is produced in association with Blueprint and is an excellent production. Alas the slight disappointment was that so few members bothered to send in their own literature as requested. This is less important at the trade shows as the Travel Guide and Steam Guide are the major items but having the individual leaflets is handy for those who want to take a stock and of course they are essential for ‘public events’. If you have not yet sent yours, please send a stock to me at 10, Hurdeswell, Long Hanborough, Witney, Oxfordshire. OX29 8DH. I suggest about 150 but please pack them securely. We have three more trade shows planned and one public exhibition but there might well be more public shows arranged at short notice. My thanks are due to Colin Brown, Mark Smith, Michael Waller and David Woodhouse. John Crane 9/MARKETING EXTRA. In addition to the specialists in Marketing, those whose interests lie in this direction are advised to read the report in Broadlines on the Scottish Forum which was held on the weekend of Saturday 19 March 2011 10/ EVENT PLANNER. www.railway-planner.eu has been brought to our attention again. To quote from the website ‘This railway-planner was developed by friends of historical railways for others and is supposed to give a fast and short overview of all events on rail. The list of events contains special tours, rail events and scheduled tours of the heritage railways or museums with special steam trains or other historical equipment’. You might consider contributing to it. 11/ MEMBERS’ EVENTS DIARY. Usual reminder of this section on the members’ website aimed at helping organisations avoid clashes or to allow possible co operation with events in the same area. Please send updates to: Email [email protected] or post to 10 Hurdeswell, Long Hanborough, Witney, Oxfordshire OX29 8DH Please submit information in the form.

  • Three Corris Walks
9 THREE CORRIS V WALKS Corris, probably named after Corus, a 7th Century monk, nestles in the Dulas Valley just south of Cader Idris, the most prominent peak in southern Snowdonia. A mixture of conifer and broadleaved woodland covers the slopes of the valleys with a rich variety of mosses, flowers, birds and mammals. Amongst the wooded slopes are obvious signs of the area’s industrial past. The Corris quarries are the most southerly of the North Wales slate quarries. At their peak they employed 800, but today only a handful remain. Quarrying started in the Corris area in 1810 though there is some evidence that it began in Aberllefenni in 1500. The numerous The Slate Trail quarries were at their most productive 2 Miles between 1850 and 1900. Initially the slate was carried by horse and cart to Derwenlas, If you are planning to arrive by car, drive past the Braich Goch Inn in Corris (on the A487), then transported by boat to Aberdyfi. The and turn left at the Corris Craft Centre. Park here, then cross back over the main road and Corris Railway was built in the 1850s and walk back towards the village, taking the path down into the village by the war memorial. from then on slate was transported to Machynlleth. The railway closed in 1948, but Turn left on Corris High Street, past the Corris Railway Museum. The railway was originally today a short section has been re-opened for built in 1859 as a horse-drawn tramway to take slate from the quarries to the river Dyfi.

Gwynn Jones) SIDELINES 143 FEBRUARY 2016 WOLVERHAMPTON LOW LEVEL STATION COMES BACK TO LIFE FOR HRA AWARDS NIGHT. The Grand Station banqueting centre, once the GWR’s most northerly broad gauge station, came back to life as a busy passenger station when it hosted the Heritage Railway Association 2015 Awards Night. The HRA Awards recognise a wide range of achievements and distinctions across the entire heritage railway industry, and the awards acknowledge individuals and institutions as well as railways. The February 6th event saw the presentation of awards in eight categories. The National Railway Museum and York Theatre Royal won the Morton’s Media (Heritage Railways) Interpretation Award, for an innovative collaboration that joined theatre with live heritage steam, when the Museum acted as a temporary home for the theatre company. The Railway Magazine Annual Award for Services to Railway Preservation was won by David Woodhouse, MBE, in recognition of his remarkable 60-year heritage railways career, which began as a volunteer on the Talyllyn Railway, and took him to senior roles across the heritage railways and tourism industry. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway won the Morton’s Media (Rail Express) Modern Traction Award, for their diesel locomotive operation, which included 160 days working for their Crompton Class 25. • No.3 SIR HAYDN GOES BACK to ITS BIRTHPLACE
PRESS INFORMATION Date: 18 TH February 2013 Contact: Kate Tilley, Great Central Railway - Tel: 07515 596835 No.3 SIR HAYDN GOES BACK TO ITS BIRTHPLACE No.3 at Tywyn Wharf in 2005 (Photo: I.Drummond) Talyllyn Railway’s Locomotive No.3 Sir Haydn is going on its travels in April, when it is due to be moved to Leicestershire to appear at the Great Central Railway’s Swithland Steam Gala between 26 th and 28 th April 2013. Here it will be displayed in the yard at Quorn and Woodhouse station along with a Talyllyn publicity and sales stand staffed by volunteers from the railway. This is an appropriate venue for the locomotive to visit as it is very close to the original works where it was built in 1878. These were the works of Henry Hughes’ ‘Hughes’s Locomotive & Tramway Engine Works Ltd.’ in Loughborough, which later became the ‘Falcon Engine and Car Works’. This in turn was taken over by the ‘Brush Electrical Engineering Company’ in the early twentieth century. No.3 was the third of three identical 0-4-0’s built by Hughes for the 2ft 3ins gauge Corris Railway, being rebuilt as an 0-4-2 in 1900. It continued to serve the line until it closed in 1948. In 1951 it, along with Corris No.4, was purchased by the embryonic Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society for the Talyllyn where it has worked ever since, although it has returned to the BRITAIN’S ONLY DOUBLE TRACK, MAIN LINE HERITAGE RAILWAY Great Central Railway, Great Central Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE11 1RW Tel: (01509) 230726 Fax: (01509) 239791 PRESS INFORMATION Corris on two occasions in the last few years.

  • Talyllyn Railway Charters, Spring 2019
TALYLLYN RAILWAY SPRING CHARTERS 2019 ~ Monday 18th, Tuesday 19th & Wednesday 20th March ~ No.3 in green livery for the "rst time since 1999 Photo courtesy David J Mitchell Two days with both Nos.3 and 4 in matching livery, plus a cameo day with No.6 In terms of my running photo charters, the Talyllyn Railway was where it all started back in 1999. There was no appetite from those at that time running charters to do what was considered a ‘minority interest’ project of the repainting of No.3 into a livery as close as we could get to the original Corris Railway red which the three original locos carried during their working lives. So, with some valuable persuasion from Michael Howard, it was agreed to the repaint and for the Girst time in several years, No.3 was matched in red livery with Corris coach 17, van 6 and authentic wagons. Over the years, the Railway has been kind enough to allow us to run a variety of charters, the monies from which have gone to the Railway, which remains the case today. Many from the Railway have helped make these events happen over twenty years and I am extremely grateful to all of them for most enjoyable times, great pictures and (perhaps less so) for the occasional near-drownings! In particular, John Smallwood and David Mitchell have been instrumental in ensuring that the Corris Railway locos together on charters in we will stable a suitable goods train in the planning has gone smoothly - sincere thanks green livery for the Girst time in over two siding at Brynglas Loop which will allow us to to everyone for their efforts on our behalf.
