Phytochemistry of Dais cotinifolia L. Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Science By Busisiwe Buyisile Danca School of Chemistry and Physics University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg Supervisor: Professor Fanie R. van Heerden May 2018 | Page Abstract Many plant-derived secondary metabolites have interesting biological activities and some plant compounds such as artemisinin (antimalarial) and vincristine (anticancer agent) are the active principles of main-stream pharmaceuticals. South Africa has an immense biodiversity and there are in the order of 25 000 indigenous plant species in the country. The phytochemistry of many of these plants has never been investigated. Many bioactive compounds have been isolated from the Thymelaeaceae, such as prostatin (potent anti-HIV agent) and antitumour diterpenoids. Although a large number of Thymelaeaceae species are indigenous to South Africa, only a limited number of species have been subjected to phytochemical investigations. Dais cotinifolia L. is one species on which phytochemical results have not been published and this tree was the subject of this investigation. Four compounds were isolated from D. cotinifolia. Three of these compounds are known metabolites, two furofuran lignans, kobusin and eudesmin, and the flavonoid catechin. A fourth compound is novel norlignan, 2-hydroxy-5-(3-methoxyphenyl)-1-(4- methoxyphenyl)pentan-1-one. The compounds were isolated by applying different chromatographic procedures, such as column chromatography, preparative centrifugal thin-layer chromatography and semi-preparative high-performance liquid chromatography. The structural elucidation of the compounds was based on mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic spectroscopy. The antioxidant activities of the crude extracts of the different plant parts were determined by the DPPH assay. -

A small section of the site is located in the Ubuntu Local Municipality within the Northern Cape Province. However, the majority of the site is located within the Beaufort West Local Municipality (BWLM), which is one of three local municipalities that make up the Central Karoo District Municipality (CKDM) in the Western Cape Province. The focus of Section 3 is therefore on the BWLM and CKDM. 2.0 ADMINISTRATIVE CONTEXT The majority of the Umsinde WEF site is located within the Beaufort West Local Municipality (BWLM), which is one of three local municipalities that make up the Central Karoo District Municipality (CKDM) in the Western Cape Province. A small section of the site is also located in the Ubuntu Local Municipality within the Northern Cape Province. The town of Beaufort West is the administrative seat of the CKDM and BWLM. The main settlements in the CKDM include, Beaufort West, Nelspoort, Murraysburg, Prince Albert, Leeu Gamka, Prince Albert Road, Matjiesfontein and Klaarstroom. Beaufort West: Beaufort West is the gateway to the Western Cape as well as the main service and development centre for the area. -

1Renisterberg IDP 2018/19 CHAPTER 1: BACKGROUND 1.1 STRUCTURE OF DOCUMENT AND INTRODUCTION This document replaces the Integrated Development Plan of Renosterberg Municipality which was reviewed during 2018/19. It is comprised as follows: Table 1: Chapters of the Integrated Development Plan Chapter Description Chapter 1: Background Chapter 2: Status Quo Chapter 3: Areas of Need Chapter 4: Priorities Chapter 5: Strategic Objectives Chapter 6: Projects Chapter 7: Alignment Chapter 8 Integration Chapter 9 Closure In terms of Chapter V of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, 2000 (No 32 of 2000), local government bodies are required to formulate and implement Integrated Development Plans (“IDPs”) for their respective areas of jurisdiction. These IDPs are meant to deal with all developmental and planning related issues for a period of five years which are also constantly reviewed yearly to accommodate 2 | P a g e 1Renisterberg IDP 2018/19 changes of developmental priories. The main objective in formulating IDPs is “to guide implementation oriented planning which is strategic and consultative and is integrated requiring holistic thinking across the conventional sectoral boundaries”. More specifically the IDP is to guide decisions in respect of Municipal Planning and align those objectives to budget, improve land management, promote local economic development and at the same time ensure effective institutional transformation in a consultative, systematic and strategic manner. In terms of the Systems Act, each Local Municipality must adopt a “process set out in writing” which is to guide the planning, drafting, adoption and review of the IDP. The process of preparing IDPs is manifested in a process plan which purpose is to guide the formulation of the entire IDP and to serve as a tool for administering and managing the process. -
