Wallingford l

A select development of 2, 3, 4 and 5 bedroom homes including apartments Welcome to King Stephen’s Place is located in the village of Crowmarsh Gifford, next to the market town of Wallingford on the banks of the in Oxfordshire; the two are connected by adjacent to our development. The whole area is full of history, with buildings and churches dating back as far as the 12th Century. During the civil war in 1139, the first of a series of wooden forts were built by King Stephen in Crowmarsh, in opposition to which supported his cousin Matilda. These were dismantled under the terms of the Treaty of Wallingford of 1153, but were the inspiration for our development name. The local church of St Mary Magdalene was also used as a fortified post by KingS tephen and it was used by Cromwell's men to shelter from the Royalists (with cannon ball holes in the vestry door to prove it!). Nearby Wallingford Castle was built by William the Conqueror and was ordered to be demolished by Oliver Cromwell in 1652 and the remains can be seen from the Castle Gardens. In the village itself there are two public houses whilst the village hall plays host to dozens of classes and events including keep fit, Zumba, children’s parties, music clubs and art classes. There is a local primary school and two nursery schools just a few minutes’ walk from King Stephen’s Place, and Wallingford Secondary School is a short drive across the bridge. Crowmarsh Gifford is a peaceful village; bypassed by the A4074 Reading to road and the A4130, though the M40 is only ten miles away. station, just ten minutes drive away, offers services to Reading and Oxford in around 20 minutes, and direct to London Paddington in under 90 minutes. A little further out, Parkway Station is just 45 minutes from London Paddington. There is plenty to see and do in Wallingford, quaint antique shops nestle alongside pubs, bistros and restaurants to suit all tastes. In the centre of town there is a large Waitrose as well as several independent shops and boutiques. The Corn Exchange houses a cinema and theatre, and ten minutes drive away the Springs Hotel and Golf Club offers an excellent championship golf course, croquet lawn, coarse fishing on the banks of the Thames, a sauna, a beauty salon and a guitar shaped outdoor pool. The traditional farmer’s market is held in Market Place and Feather’s Yard every month, and the annual Pooh Sticks Championships is held at Days Lock with a Blues and Beer Festival held each June.
