A Rapid Terrestrial Ecological Assessment of Lake Atalanta Park, City of Rogers, Benton County, Arkansas Prairie grasses including big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii), little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium), and side‐oats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula) thrive in a southwest‐facing limestone glade overlooking Lake Atalanta. This area, on a steep hillside east of the Lake Atalanta dam, contains some of the highest quality natural communities remaining in the park. (incl. var. ozarkanum (E.J. Palmer & Steyerm.) Steyerm.), the Ozark wake robin, is a perennial, woodland spring ephemeral that blooms in Missouri in late March or early April and fruits and senesces in early July. The species was formerly considered federally for listing as an endangered species, is listed as category S2 of conservation concern in Missouri by the Missouri Natural Heritage Program (Missouri Natural Heritage Program, 2006), and is considered to be imperiled in all five of the states where it grows. It is believed to be limited to 17 sites in Missouri. As a member of the spring ephemeral guild, T. pusillum is a potentially important component of Ozark woodlands. Spring ephemerals provide nectar and pollen to pollinators early in their above ground season when few other plants are in bloom, and they function as a “vernal dam” by temporarily sequestering nutrients and preventing leaching from forest systems during a period of high nutrient availability (Vitousek and Reiners, 1975; Bormann and Likens, 1979; Blank et al., 1980; Hedin et al., 1995; Anderson and Eickmeier, 2000; Anderson, 2004). The list also provides standardized acronyms for each taxon and information on nativity, physiognomy, and wetness ratings. Annotated comments for selected taxa provide taxonomic, floristic, and ecological information, particularly for taxa not recognized in recent treatments of the Missouri flora. Synonymy crosswalks are provided for three references commonly used in Missouri. A discussion of the concept and application of Floristic Quality Assessment is presented. To accurately reflect ecological and taxonomic relationships, new combinations are validated for two distinct taxa, Dichanthelium ashei and D. werneri , and problems in application of infraspecific taxon names within Quercus shumardii are clarified. After graduation from college, he moved to Eastern Oklahoma State College where he took a position as Instructor in Botany and Agronomy. In the course of conducting botany field trips and working with local residents on their plant problems, the author became increasingly interested in the flora of that area and of the State of Oklahoma. This led to an extensive study of the northern portion of the Oauchita Highlands with collections currently numbering approximately 4,200. The specimens have been processed according to standard herbarium procedures. The first set has been placed in the Herbarium of Oklahoma State University with the second set going to Eastern Oklahoma State College at Wilburton.
