Mid Sussex Ramblers Registered Charity No. 1093577 Web: www.midsussexramblers.co.uk Programme April 2019 to July 2019 Car Share: when shown against a walk indicates to members: If you would like a lift or can offer one to others, please telephone the leader who will try to make arrangements. Drivers appreciate it when a voluntary contribution towards fuel and parking costs is made and people accepting lifts should take precautions not to dirty the car. As a guide 28p per mile is the RA amount which reasonably covers the cost incurred by the driver. This is to be for Mid Sussex Group members only and lifts cannot be guaranteed. All members are encouraged to carry a small First Aid kit with them on walks. DOGS: Well behaved dogs on leads or under control are welcome on all our walks, unless the walk leader has stated 'No Dogs Please' (This does not apply to Registered Assistance Dogs). Any queries should be addressed to the Walk Leader We currently enjoy large numbers on many of our walks and they often include people who are new to group walking, so would all walkers please keep in visual contact with those in front and more importantly those behind. This is imperative when there is a change of direction. For walk ‘difficulty’ descriptions please refer to the back pages of this programme. PREFACE following work was originally written as a disserta- THEtion for the degree of B.A. with Honours in English Language and Philology in the University of Liverpool, It has since been completely revised and brought up to date. The of the book is no has scope purely linguistic ; attempt been made to describe geographical or topographical features, although these have naturally been taken into account in de- termining etymologies. My source for the modern forms of the names has been Kelly's Directory of Kent, Surrey and Sussex, amplified by reference to Bartholomew's Survey Gazetteer of the British Isles and to the Times Atlas.

It has been very much of a joint effort between Joe Pettitt and myself. We hope that you will find something of interest inside. But we do not intend that future issues shall be one- or two-man affairs; this is your Bulletin, and we want to hear about what you have been doing. We shall be very happy to receive notes on interesting finds that you have made, or equally about matters that puzzle you. There is enough going on among our membership, which is increasing at a very satisfactory rate, to keep at least two issues of this size filled each year.

Acknowledgements Seldom is it possible to produce a publication such as this without the input of a team of volunteers, backed by organisations sympathetic to the subject-matter, and this report is no exception. The records which form the basis for this work were made by the dedicated fieldwork of the members of the Sussex Botanical Recording Society (SBRS), The Botanical Society of the British Isles (BSBI), the British Bryological Society (BBS), The British Lichen Society (BLS) and other keen enthusiasts. This data is held by the nominated County Recorders. The Sussex Biodiversity Record Centre (SxBRC) compiled the tables of the Sussex rare Bryophytes and Lichens. It is important to note that the many contributors to the text gave their time freely and with generosity to ensure this work was completed within a tight timescale. Many of the contributions were typed by Rita Hemsley. Special thanks must go to Alan Knapp for compiling and formatting all the computerised text.
