Building National Museums in Europe 1750-2010. Conference proceedings from EuNaMus, European National Museums: Identity Politics, the Uses of the Past and the European Citizen, Bologna 28-30 April 2011. Peter Aronsson & Gabriella Elgenius (eds) EuNaMus Report No 1. Published by Linköping University Electronic Press: http://www.ep.liu.se/ecp_home/index.en.aspx?issue=064 © The Author. National Museums in Switzerland Felicity Bodenstein Summary The confederate form of its government and the cantonal structure of the Swiss state largely conditions Switzerland’s museum geography. Cultural affairs are not generally managed by the federal government but are traditionally the jurisdiction of the cantons, and all except a handful of Switzerland’s 949 museums are not national (Federal Department for the Interior, 2005: 3). The birth of Switzerland’s first national museum was long and arduous and great apprehension was repeatedly expressed at the idea of such an institution. For many Swiss, it represented an obvious contradiction to the state’s federal-national principal. In the years between the establishment of the first Helvetic Republic (1798-1803) up until the creation of the Swiss confederate state in 1848 and following, no national museums of any kind were founded. A material reason for this was that the creation of the Federal state was not accompanied by any massive movement of secularization, such as that which had, in France, transferred huge quantities of church possessions and artworks into the hands of the state. In Switzerland, the secularization of ecclesiastical treasures was a gradual process going back to the period of the Reformation and thus predating national concerns.

SOLDIERS' CHRISTMAS 1944 DAVID HOPE Many of you will have seen the document illustrated above left and wondered what it was issued for. In a special issue of 'Tell' in March 2012 the author said these documents were “a special thankyou card sent to all soldiers on active duty”. This is clearly not so, as a look at the address on the card shows. These documents were in fact thankyou cards sent to people and businesses who contributed to the Soldiers' Christmas Fund. Advertisements were placed in newspapers and magazines to encourage people to contribute. The paragraph below is a translation of the advertisement and above right an illustration that appeared with it. More soldiers were on duty at Christmas 1944 because of the situation around Switzerland's borders at the time. “The Supreme commander of the Army, General Guisan, has entrusted the Welfare chief of the Army to conduct the Soldiers Christmas 1944. To raise funds for the soldiers' packages a badge sale was carried out on 9 th and 10th December throughout Switzerland. A lapel pin with a soldier's head attached to a red and white ribbon was for sale. Members of the Army were permitted to wear this badge according to an Army command of 21 st November.

PRESENTATION From nature to culture, a journey to the Age of Enlightenment THE SITE Situated in a beautiful location overlooking the immense curve of Lake Geneva, just a few minutes from Nyon and less than half an hour from Lausanne and Geneva, the Château de Prangins is the perfect place to enjoy a walk, view exhibitions and learn about modern Swiss history. The building, a magnificent residence built in the 1730s in the French style, is home to the Swiss National Museum in French-speaking Switzerland and is the largest 18th-century château open to the public in the country. Past guests have included celebrated figures such as Voltaire and Joseph Bonaparte. Formerly a baronial and princely seat and subsequently a boarding school, Château de Prangins became a museum in 1998, and houses both permanent and temporary exhibitions. It is surrounded by five hectares of parkland including a panoramic terrace and a superb kitchen garden – the only one of its kind in Switzerland – containing around a hundred historic varieties. Château de Prangins is very much a living building, playing host to numerous events and activities organised to accompany its exhibitions. The museum shop, the Café du Château and various conference rooms with capacity for between 10 and 100 people further complement its cultural offerings. 2 Musée national suisse. | Château de Prangins. | 1197 Prangins | +41 (0)22 994 88 90 | [email protected] | www.chateaudeprangins.ch HISTORY OF THE MUSEUM The château was offered to the Swiss Confederation by the cantons of Vaud and Geneva in 1975 and thereafter became the base for the Swiss National Museum in French-speaking Switzerland.
