We are pleased to once again present a rich array of Music and Arts offerings for the 2017-2018 season. Continuing with our central goal – there is something to appeal to audiences of all ages, backgrounds and musical tastes: classic choral offerings, dazzling organ repertoire, chamber music, global music, Broadway show tunes, holiday favorites and contemporary, folk, gospel, and jazz music. Ann Marie Koukios Ted Brokaw Minister of Music Music and Liturgical Arts Forum Chair Ann Arbor First Music 120 South State Street and Arts Downtown Series Ann Arbor, MI 48104 SEPTEMBER Season Opener: A Trip through Prague 24, 2017 SUNDAY Ann Arbor Camerata Orchestra 3:00 pm Welcoming the Camerata’s new music director Jotaro Nakano, conductor We are pleased to begin our 2017-2018 Music Series with the return of the Ann Arbor Camerata Orchestra, a chamber orchestra dedicated to bringing music to all audiences. Performing old works and new, collaborating with artists at the University of Michigan, and advocating for Arts Education, the Camerata works to inspire culture and unity throughout Washtenaw County. This concert Jotaro Nakano welcomes new conductor Jotaro Nakano, who will lead the ensemble in performances of Mozart’s Symphony No. 38 “Prague”, Smetana’s Three Dances from “The Bartered Bride”, and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 7. OCTOBER 8, 2017 “Once Upon a Dream…” SUNDAY Annual Music Fundraiser 3:15 pm Cabaret Show Hors D’oeuvres Our Music and Liturgical Arts team presents the first of two music ministry 4:00 – 5:30 pm fundraisers during the 2017-2018 church “Dreams” Concert season. This first event is a delightful evening of entertainment, celebration and praise through the music of our various music ministries – Chancel Choir, Chancel Bells, FUMC Vocal Staff, and Children’s Choirs. This year we focus on music exploring the inspiration of “dreams”, featuring selections from Gypsy, Les Miz, Beauty and the Beast, Man from La Mancha, and Cinderella as well as popular selections by Judy Collins, Billy Joel, Hall & Oates, Frank Sinatra, the Mamas and the Papas, and more! We offer this concert to thank all who consider donating to our ministry to help us in meeting our financial goals as well as for all who simply wish to attend. NOVEMBER 8, 2017 Ambassadors in Song An International Male Chorus Symposium WEDNESDAY 7:00 pm UM Men’s Glee Club Choral Festival Eugene Rogers, coordinator/conductor Global Music Choral Workshop – FUMC Sanctuary NOVEMBER Wednesday, November 8, 2017 10-11, 2017 Paulo Vassalo Lourenço (Portugal) & Lhente Marie-Pitout (South Africa) SAT - SUN Festival Sessions and Concerts: 7:00 pm Hill Auditorium, Rackham Auditorium, Michigan League, FUMC Sat-Sun, November 10-11, 2017 We are delighted to serve as a satellite venue and workshop host in partnership with the UM Men’s Glee Club’s upcoming 2017 symposium. In celebration of the University’s Bicentennial, the Men’s Eugene Rogers Glee Club is hosting Ambassadors of Song, an International Male Chorus Symposium taking place on November 10th & 11th, 2017. With world-renowned presenters and performances by premier choral groups, including the internationally- acclaimed Chanticleer, this fall weekend in Ann Arbor seeks to foster intellectual discourse and promote musical innovations of the future. On Wednesday, November 8, two distinguished guest conductors, Lhente Marie-Pitout Paulo Vassalo Lourenço and Lhente Marie-Pitout will present a special opportunity for all choral lovers in a “Global Choral Workshop” featuring choral music from Portugal and South Africa. The workshop is co-sponsored by the UM Choral Department, FUMC Music Ministries, and Michigan ACDA Michigan Chapter. For more symposium information see Paulo Vassalo Lourenço the UM symposium website at http://bicentennial.ummgc.org NOVEMBER 19, 2017 Music of Thanksgiving SUNDAY FUMC Chancel Choir & Sinfonietta Musicians 9:00 & 11:15 am Under the direction of the Minister of Music Ann Marie Koukios, the Sunday morning First United Methodist Church Chancel Choir, Vocal Staff, organist worship services Naki Sung Kripfganf and Sinfonietta string quartet will unite in special Thanksgiving Music Offerings. Sunday Worship services will feature inspirational selections with powerful lyrics that convey our collective prayer and thanks for eternal grace, divine love, worldly joys, and the redemptive light of transformation so divinely symbolized through the arts. Music selections include Carol Barnett’s depiction of “the transporting rapturous scene…where milk and honey flow” inMcKay , a setting of an Appalachian hymn tune from the Sacred Harp; Gwyneth Walker’s inspiring setting of E. E. Cumming’s lyrics in I Thank You God, which gives thanks for creation and for giving us the faith to overcome all obstacles in our lives; and lastly in the popular musical setting Luminous Night of the Soul featured in the Narnia Series movies, by Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo. Through lyrics by Charles Anthony Silvestri and St. John of the Cross, we explore the transformation of our lives through the gifts of our creator as revealed through the arts. JANUARY 21, 2018 Beethoven & Brahms-Tragedy & Triumph SUNDAY Ann Arbor Camerata Orchestra 3:00 pm Jotaro Nakano, conductor In a second appearance on this year’s Downtown Series, the Ann Arbor Camerata Orchestra will present another inspiring concert with stunning repertoire for Chamber Orchestra. Under the baton of conductor Jotaro Nakano, this concert will feature performances of works by two giant composers - Beethoven’s Egmont Overture and Brahms’ Symphony No. 1. Join the Ann Arbor Camerata for performances of the revolutionary and breathtaking music of Beethoven and Brahms. These titans’ works of orchestral repertoire defied previous musical conventions and pioneered the romantic era. Witness these profound works of innovation, wonder, and grandeur! FEBRUARY The Footprints of African American 10-11, 2018 Composers in Michigan WEEKEND Norah Duncan IV, Wayne State University guest conductor/composer Saturday Wayne State University Concert Chorale, and Choral Union 6:00 pm FUMC Chancel Choir, Youth Chorale & Epworth Children’s Choirs International Dinner Norah Duncan IV & Noah Horn, guest conductors Prepared by James Beard Award Winning Chef Alex Young We are pleased to welcome Speaker Norah Duncan IV speaks on Professor Norah Duncan IV “The Musical Arts at WSU” “in residence” at FUMC for $15/adults, $8/students, our Annual Global Music $40/entire family, Weekend - leading us on a children under 5 yrs./free musical journey exploring the 7:30 pm music of African American Global Music Concert choral composers whose (with Norah Duncan, musical paths have connected them with our own Michigan musical WSU Choirs & Soli, FUMC Choirs) heritage. Professor Duncan serves as Chair of the Department of Music Sunday at Wayne State University and additionally serves as Area Coordinator for 9:30 & 11:15 am Organ Performance. As organist, he has concertized extensively in both Downtown Global the United States and Europe. As a liturgical musician, he has conducted Worship Services Norah Duncan IV, his former Cathedral Choir in several Papal Visits to Rome, as well as FUMC Choirs and Vocal Staff established the Gregorian Institute of Detroit for the study of Gregorian chant in collaboration with the Benedictine Monastery in Solesmes, France. He is also a contributing composer and consultant for the GIA Music Publishing Company while also serving as a member of the review committee for the popular “Lead Me, Guide Me” African American Catholic Hymnal. We also welcome the Wayne Norah Duncan IV State University Choirs, under the direction of Noah Horn, in joining us in a stirring weekend uplifting inspiring choral works by such composers including Adophus Hailstork, Moses Hogan, Robert Harris, William Dawson, Brazeal Dennard, Lettie Halston, Noah Horn and guest composer Norah Duncan IV. MARCH UM Theatre Students’ Afternoon Musicale 11, 2018 featuring favorite musical theatre selections SUNDAY 3:00 pm Cynthia Kortman Westphal, director The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance maintains a comprehensive training program which carries a national reputation among professional agents, casting directors, and producers as being among the best of its kind. These Fine Arts Degree Programs offered in Musical Theatre attract talented students throughout the country, who, along with their studies, present a Cynthia Kortman Westphal number of superb performances throughout the academic year. We are delighted to welcome current students from the UM Musical Theatre Department, under the direction of Musical Theatre Professor Cynthia Westphal, in presenting a dazzling afternoon performance of favorite Musical Theatre Selections.
