On behalf of the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra, welcome! We can think of no better way to celebrate the good things in life than by offering our community the opportunity to hear a wonderfully wide range of music, performed by an enthusiastic group of talented, dedicated musicians. The last 48 years has seen the LCSO evolve into a major cultural asset in the region. Comprised of over 60 local musicians, the semi-professional orchestra is dedicated to enriching the lives of people of all ages throughout the year. In addition to its regular season concerts in November, March, and April, the LCSO presents the annual Holiday at the Pops, an event that has become a time-honored community tradition. Another much-anticipated annual event is Hoosier STAR, a singing competition that gives talented vocalists a chance to perform before a live orchestra and an appreciative audience. During the warmer months, the LCSO can be seen performing at outside venues such as La Porte’s Fox Park, New Buffalo Lake Park and Beach, Michigan City’s Washington Park and the Friendship Botanical Gardens on U.S. 12. The LCSO is also committed to bringing the joy of music to young people. Over 6,000 area students are treated each October to The Drayton Family Children’s Education Concert at the Civic Auditorium, where the LCSO performs three back-to-back concerts in a single day. In addition, the LCSO supports student music education and artistic experience with our New Generations initiative. We are collaborating with area school systems to promote music education programming; working to revive our Young Artist Competition; developing our student apprentice program; and expanding our relationship with Drew’s Gift of Music, a program which loans donated instruments to students who cannot afford an instrument of their own. Under the talented leadership of Executive Director Tim King, Interim Music Director Chuck Steck, and the LCSO Board of Directors, the orchestra is looking forward to bringing even more musical opportunities to our region. Thank you — to all of you. We owe a debt of gratitude to you for your support. Whether you attend a single concert, buy a season ticket, make a direct donation, join the Friends of the Symphony, or donate an instrument to Drew’s Gift, you are supporting the LCSO.

And now, please sit back and enjoy the performance.

Crazy for You Overture – George and Ira Gershwin/arranged by Jerry Brubaker is a charming romantic comedy that features some of George (1898-1937) and Ira (1896-1983) Gershwin’s most beloved songs. Girl Crazy opened on Broadway in 1930 and ran for 272 performances. It then served as the basis for the 1992 musical, Crazy For You, which was rewritten and includes added songs from other Gershwin shows. A rich- boy-meets-hometown-girl romantic comedy, Crazy For You tells the story of young New York banker Bobby Child, who is sent to foreclose on a rundown theatre in Deadrock, Nevada. He falls for the theatre owner’s daughter, Polly Baker, but she has an instant dislike for the city slicker. Bobby vows to win Polly’s heart and save the theatre, through cunning, razzmatazz, and a hilarious case of mistaken identity. Memorable Gersh- win tunes from the score include “,” “Naughty Baby,” “They Can’t Take That Away From Me,” “,” “But Not For Me,” “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” and “Someone To Watch Over Me.”

I Got Rhythm – George Gershwin/orchestrated by Hershy Kay Composed by George Gershwin (1898-1937), “I Got Rhythm” is one of the classics introduced in his 1930 musical Girl Crazy. The song was a perfect vehicle for jazz improvisers and the chord progression was used by many swing and bebop musicians for other successful jazz tunes. The song has been featured in musicals, films, and is just one of several classics included in the ballet Who Cares? Orchestrated by Hershy Kay, Who Cares was the result of a collaboration discussed between George Balanchine and Gershwin before the ’s death in 1937. Thirty-three years later, Balanchine selected and formed seventeen of Gershwin’s songs from Broadway musicals into the ballet. Gershwin could not have known the long range of success the tune would have, but he would have been thrilled. As the line in the song says, who could ask for anything more?

Irving Berlin: A Symphonic Portrait – arranged by Hawley Ades Irving Berlin (1888-1989) is one of America’s greatest songwriters, and likely among America’s great immigrant success stories, as Berlin’s family - grated to from Russia when he was five years old. Many of Berlin’s songs have become recognized as standards and a natural part of Americans’ shared music culture. Berlin never learned to read or write music, and had others transcribe for him. He boasted of his ignorance and was quoted as saying that since he knew little about the rules of song- writing, he was “free to violate them, and the result was often an original twist.” Berlin died at age 101, having written music for dozens of movies and Broadway shows, producing a catalog of over 1500 songs. “Irving Berlin: A Symphonic Portrait” was published in 1972 by Hawley Ades, who worked for Berlin as an arranger in the 1930s. The medley includes several 23 Program Notes

of Berlin’s most-loved songs: “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” “Say It With Music,” “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” “Easter Parade,” “White Christmas,” and “God Bless America.”

Gershwin Medley – George Gershwin/arranged by Norman Leyden Love Walked In/Somebody Loves Me/The Man I Love George Gershwin’s (1898-1937) collaboration composing with his lyricist brother Ira produced scores of the most hummable tunes combined with the most repeatable lyrics ever to fall on the American ear. Three of Gershwin’s tunes are woven together in this medley arranged by Norman Leyden. “Love Walked In” was introduced in the 1938 film Goldwyn Follies. It was in the midst of working on this film when George collapsed and died at age 38 of a brain tumor. “Somebody Loves Me” was written with Buddy De Sylva and Ballard MacDonald for the 1924 edition of The George White Scandals, a series of revues that began in 1919 and ran through 1936. “The Man I Love” was originally intended to be part of the Gershwins’ 1924 mu- sical, Lady, Be Good, with the title “The Girl I Love.” It was dropped from this musical and then appeared in Strike Up The Band in 1927 with the new title “The Man I Love.”

Armed Forces Salute – Bob Lowden “Armed Forces Salute” is a tradition of a musical salute to the Armed Forces, in recognition of the fighting men and women who serve our country. This popular is by Bob Lowden (1920–1999) —a prolific composer, arranger, and renowned clarinetist. Lowden’s trib- ute is an upbeat medley of tunes that includes The U.S. Army’s The Cais- son Song (1908), the U.S. Coast Guard’s Semper Paratus (Always Ready, original version, 1922), The U.S. Marine Corps’ The Marine’s Hymn (original date unknown but it was in wide spread use by the mid-1800s), The U.S. Air Force’s The U.S. Air Force (1951) and The U.S. Navy’s Anchors Aweigh (1907). This salute is sure to leave you with a lump in your throat and pride in your heart.

Cole Porter Salute – Cole Porter/arranged by John Whitney Composer/Songwriter Cole Porter (1891-1964) was born in Peru, Indiana. He began composing songs as early as 1901 at the age of 10, and when he died in 1964, he had composed music and lyrics for 23 Broadway shows, and had written over 800 songs, many of which have become timeless classics. In Cole Porter Salute, arranger John Whitney has created a fabulous tribute to Porter. The work features “Another Op’nin’, Another Show,” from the 1948 musical Kiss Me, Kate, for which Porter wrote the mu- sic and lyrics, “In the Still of the Night,” published in 1937 for the MGM film

24 Program Notes

Rosalie, “,” from the original 1934 production of Anything Goes, and “Night and Day,” from the 1932 Broadway production of Gay Divorce.

Porgy and Bess – George Gershwin/arranged by Robert Russell Bennett George Gershwin (1898-1937) read DuBose Heyward’s novel, Porgy, in 1926 and was inspired by characters and situations Heyward observed in his hometown of Charleston, South Carolina. Gershwin wrote to Heyward to collaborate on a musical, and much of their work happened via mail and telegram. Ira Gershwin was responsible for most of the song lyrics, but Heyward was solely responsible for one of the show’s finest songs, “Sum- mertime.” Robert Russell Bennett (1894-1981), a close friend of Gershwin’s during the composition of the musical, created this arrangement of music from Porgy and Bess. Excerpts from the show included in this medley are: “Clara,” “A Woman Is A Sometime Thing,” “Summertime,” “I Got Plenty O’Nuttin’,” “Bess You Is My Woman,” “Oh, I Can’t Sit Down,” “There’s a Boat Dat’s Leavin’ Soon for New York,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” and “O Lawd I’m On My Way.”

Begin the Beguine – Cole Porter/arranged by Lang “Begin the Beguine” is one of the many popular songs written by Cole Por- ter (1891-1964). It was composed during a 1935 Pacific cruise Porter was on, and it was introduced in the Broadway musical . At first, the song gained little popularity, but bandleader and clarinetist Artie Shaw chose to record an arrangement of it in 1938. This recording skyrocketed the fame of Shaw and his band as well as the tune, which became a best-selling record. A “beguine” was originally meant to be a Christian lay woman of the 13th or 14th century living in a religious community without formal vows, but in the creole of the Caribbean, especially in Martinique and Guadeloupe, the term came to mean “white woman” and was then applied to a style of music and dance, in particular a slow, close couples dance. This combination of French ballroom dance and Latin folk dance became popular in Paris and spread further abroad in the 1940s, largely due to the influence of Porter’s “Begin the Beguine.”

American In Paris Suite – George Gershwin/arranged by Whitney George Gershwin (1898-1937) and his brother Ira went on a European tour in March 1928, and spent most of their time in Paris, which in the 1920s was still at the center of the artistic universe. Gershwin brought the unfinished score for a commissioned orchestral piece with him and sketched out most of the score in Paris that spring. Though reviews of the first perfor- mance of his “” were mixed, it became a standard

25 Program Notes

of the orchestral repertoire almost as soon as it was premiered. Gershwin provided the following description of the work:

“The opening gay section is followed by a rich with a strong rhyth- mic undercurrent. Our American friend, perhaps after strolling into a café and having a couple of drinks, has succumbed to a spasm of homesick- ness. The harmony here is both more intense and simple than in the pre- ceding pages. This blues rises to a climax, followed by a coda in which the spirit of the music returns to the vivacity and bubbling exuberance of the opening part, with its impressions of Paris. Apparently the homesick Ameri- can, having left the café and reached the open air, has disowned his spell of the blues, and once again is an alert spectator of Parisian life. At the conclusion, the street noises and French atmosphere are triumphant.”
