  • Die Oorsprong Van Die ' Paadekraal-Gelofte'
Die oorsprong van die ' Paadekraal-Gelofte' Kálmán Papp Krugersdorp Abstract The Origin of the ‘Paardekraal Vow’ Contrary to common belief that the ‘1880 Vow' was taken at Paarde kraal, on the restoration o f the Republic on 13 December 1880, the writer has documentary proof that this ‘Vow’ was in existence almost two years before that date. An agreement is said to have been signed by a number o f the Boers at Wonderfontein, where they had gathered between 10 and 13 January 1879 to claim the restoration o f the Republic. Both these minutes and the Transvaal press ignored this agreement as it was feared that they would lead to premature armed resistance. The Paar dekraal Festival Commission became aware o f the agreement in 1945 and adopted it as the ‘Vow o f 1880' in their 1946 programme. 1.

  • Collecting South African Art in the 1930S: the Role of Martin Du Toit
Historia 53,1, Mei/May 2008, pp 162-196 Collecting South African Art in the 1930s: The Role of Martin du Toit ∗ Jeanne van Eeden Introduction This article indicates the role Professor Marthinus (Martin) Lourens du Toit (1897-1938) played as a patron of South African visual art in the 1930s. During the time that he was head of the Department of Afrikaans Art and Culture at the University of Pretoria between 1931 and 1938, Martin du Toit (Figure 1) initiated a series of art exhibitions in the Macfadyen Hall to display the work of contemporary, often contentious artists. The university wished to support artists and provided this exhibition space free of charge. As a token of appreciation, many artists donated an artwork at the end of the exhibition.1 Du Toit used these exhibitions as a starting point in building up a representative collection of South African art, which he augmented with donations from artists and art collectors. This article suggests that Martin du Toit and the Department of Afrikaans Art and Culture fulfilled an important role by attempting to instil an appreciation for art in Pretoria through regular exhibitions and by laying the foundations for an institutional art collection. This form of academic patronage of South African artists seems to have been rare in the 1930s, and took place during a decisive period regarding the politicised debates concerning ethnicity, modernism, nationalism, and national art, and their relation to cultural identity and artistic expression. In this article, I refer to relevant aspects of these issues and relate them to the discourse of art collecting in the 1930s where possible,2 but do not engage in a discussion of the artworks as such.

  • INTRODUCTION an Afrikaner's Long Walk to Reconciliation Leon Wessels
1 INTRODUCTION An Afrikaner’s long walk to reconciliation Leon Wessels has been through changes since he rode behind Verwoerd in 1964, writes Kevin Ritchie A young man sits atop a white horse, looking resolutely into the camera. The caption tells us he’s part of an honour guard during the erstwhile National Party’s 50th anniversary celebrations in de Wildt, a small town in the old western Transvaal, in 1964. The rider is waiting to escort the then prime minister of apartheid South Africa Hendrik Verwoerd. The caption tells us that the rider would ultimately become the first NP cabinet minister to apologise publicly for apartheid to a democratic South Africa. The rider is Leon Wessels, a co-author of South Africa’s much-lauded Constitution and a two-term commissioner at South Africa’s Human Rights Commission. The picture was taken almost 43 years ago by David Goldblatt, today an internationally acclaimed photographer, then a Jewish South African shopkeeper from a mining village west of Johannesburg with what would become a burning passion for documentary photography. The image, one of 100 photographs of a cross section of Afrikaners taken throughout the 1960’s was first published in 1975 as a book entitled Some Afrikaners Photographed. The book immediately became a cause célèbre, reviled by the Afrikaner establishment and gingerly treated by the English media with even The Sunday Times refusing to run a review of it, because it challenged the official Afrikaner view of racial superiority and divine ordination. This week a new addition, Some Afrikaners Revisited, was released 32 years after the first one and 13 years into South Africa’s democracy.
