This appreciation is shown in the beautiful collection of art and interior ornaments across The Royal Portfolio properties. Art is deeply ingrained into each property’s character, reflecting Liz and Phil Biden’s keen and adventurous eye for the beautiful. Drawing inspiration from her travels around the world, Liz has acquired a unique and varied collection of art and interior artifacts. Local artists are often commissioned, giving up-and-coming African artists exposure to the international guests staying at each property. The Silo Hotel, the latest addition to The Royal Portfolio, is one of the first hotels in the world to be situated directly above a prestigious art museum, Zeitz MOCAA. 1 Die kunstenaar en skrywer Hans Anton Aschenborn (1 Februarie 1888 – 10 April 1931) was bekend vir sy skilderye en illustrasies van diere in Suid-Afrika en Duitsland (sien ouer Duitse Thieme-Becker of Saur kunsensiklopedies, daar is ook ‟n doktors tesis gedoen oor Hans Anton Aschenborns se grafiese werk in die bekende kultuurtydskrif 'Lantern' van 1965 - sien |1| onder). Hy, Sangiro en Pierneef was vriende. Aschenborn het illustrasies gemaak vir Sangiro se 'Uit Oerwoud en Vlakte' en sy 'Sketse uit die Oos-Afrikaanse Dierewêreld'. Aschenborn se eie boeke soos 'Onduno und andere Tiergeschichten' en 'Satan und andere afrikanische Erzählungen' is in Afrikaans vertaal. In 1916 het hy die teks vir die lied "Heia Safari" geskryf. Uli Aschenborn Die kunstenaar Uli Aschenborn (Hans Ulrich Aschenborn) is in 1947 in Johannesburg Suid-Afrika gebore |1| |4|. Sy pa Dieter Aschenborn en sy oupa Hans Anton Aschenborn (of Hans Aschenborn) is albei bekende kunstenaars in Suider-Afrika |2| |3| |12|. Ook is Uli een van die bekendste kunstenaars van Namibië en soos sy pa en oupa bekend veral vir dinamiese diereskilderye en landskappe van Afrika |8| |9| |11|. Daar is in Windhoek ook ‟n Aschenbornstraat. Uli wat in Aachen Duitsland lewe, begin ook alhoemeer bekend raak in Europa |11|. Uli geniet aansien as 'n restoureerder van Afrikaanse en Europese skilderye, en het ook 'n paar merkwaardige muurskilderye in Namibië gedoen (soos by Düsternbrook, Okapuka, die Cañon Lodge, Kings Den en meer). Hy het ook al verskeie hekke ontwerp |9|. Florence L J Zerffi
FLORENCE LOUISE JOSEPHINE ZERFFI Florence Louise Josephine Zerffi (Image 1) was born in London, England. Her details were registered in Kensington Birth Register, July 1883 (Image 2). Mother: Louise Agnes Louise Emilie Agnes Zerffi née Beÿer, Father: William Douglas Zerffi, married in Berlin. Art Education Florence Zerffi studied art in London and at the Konigliche Kunstgewerbeschule, Berlin under Professor Emil Doepler. Short Artist Biography (Ref: 3) - 1916 She came to South Africa, settled in Cape Town; was elected a member of South African Society of Artists (SASA). She exhibited in various group exhibitions, including those of the SASA. Having been involved in art circles, she was a colleague of such well-known artists as Nita Spilhaus, Gregoire Boonzaier, Freida Lock, Terence McCaw, Hugo Naude, Lippy Lipshitz and Walter Battiss. - 1921 to 1924 She was appointed Keeper of Michaelis Art Collection in the Old Town House. Following this appointment, her participation in SASA exhibitions came to an end. She then held various exhibitions with Ruth Prowse. 1 - 1924 (26 May) Zerffi married artist Harry Stratford Caldecott (Ref: 4, 5 & 6). Over the years the couple exhibited together on a regular basis, with their first joint exhibition being in 1925. Caldecott became one of Zerffi’s favourite subjects for her paintings. Their styles were complete opposites, Zerffi’s the result of her German training, whilst Caldecott showed influences of the French school. - 1929 Her husband died 12 December 1929, following which she taught painting privately at various Cape Town High Schools. She preferred to work in the subdued light of her studio as she found the intense African light detracted from the true nature of the colours she chose to represent. -

Tuesday, 13 April 2021 Session 7 at 7pm 19th Century, Modern, Post-War and Contemporary Art including The KWV Collection, The Metropolitan Life Collection, Property of a Gentleman and Property of a Collector Evening Sale Lots 541–627 Lot 558 Cecil Skotnes, The Origin of Wine/The Epic of Gilgamesh (detail) 133 THE KWV COLLECTION LOTS 541–558 Established in 1918 as a co-operative (Ko-operatiewe Wijnbouwers Vereniging van Zuid-Afrika) by a group of farmers and producers looking to stablise the nascent wine industry, KWV has since become a household name, representing some of South Africa’s, fi nest wines and spirits. The history of the KWV art collection refl ects the origins of the brand with the theme of the Cape winelands recurring throughout. As a corporate collection assembled over the course of some 50 years, the motivation was to purchase established names as well as support local emerging artists who had a relationship with the extended Boland winelands. The result is a fascinating slice through South African art history in which the landscapes refl ect where the fruit of the vine was grown and the interiors suggest where it was consumed and enjoyed.
