  • A Forgotten Circuit
newsroom History Jul 8, 2019 A forgotten circuit On July 8, 1962 Dan Gurney secured Porsche its first and so far last Grand Prix win at a World Championship round at the fearsome Rouen-les-Essarts. Now, the circuit is all but forgotten. To many a Le Mans regular, the city of Rouen is little more than an inconvenience. Situated between the Circuit de la Sarthe and the rest of northern France, Rouen, with its narrow streets, tight underpasses and seemingly infinite number of traffic lights represents something of a stumbling block — trapping motorists in a location that’s as breathtakingly beautiful as it is choking. However, this medieval city has more to offer the motorsport enthusiast than meets the eye. Quite literally, in fact. Situated in an attractive area of woodland south-west of the city, lays what was once considered to be one of Europe’s finest racing circuits: Rouen-les-Essarts. Opened in 1950 and measuring 3.2 miles in length, this picturesque track — once home to iconic events such as the Tour de France Automobile and the French Grand Prix — was, even by the standards of the day, notoriously unforgiving. Unlike ‘modern’ post war tracks such as Goodwood, Silverstone or Zeltweg that were built on wide, flat airbases, Rouen-les-Essarts, was an old school, naturally occurring circuit; the topography of the land creating a fast, flowing and fearsome layout, with an elevation profile that must have struck fear into the hearts of even the most seasoned drivers. Forget artificial run-off areas, gravel traps or catch fencing, drivers were either on the tarmac or in the trees, no exceptions.

In the hands of future Formula One constructor Guy Ligier, GT40 P/1003 was the rst GT40 to claim a victory in Europe. It ran under the Ford France banner for Ligier through the 1965 and 1966 seasons before passing on to Jean-Michel Giorgi, who continued to race it as a Ford France car. During that time GT40 P/1003 was only ever out-performed by another GT40 on four occasions! In Ligier’s hands it debuted at the 1965 Nurburgring 1000 Km’s, co-driven by Le Mans winner Maurice Trintignant. Ligier then gave the GT40 that historic rst European win at Magny-Cours and followed it up with another victory in the Trophee du Cognac. There were class wins on the Chamrousse and Mont-Dore hillclimbs, with further competition that season at the Ollon-Villars mountain hillclimb and one nal victory at Albi. The following season Ligier, with close friend Jo Schlesser, took the class win and fth overall at the Nurburgring 1000kms, before 1003 was bought for the 1967 season by the aforementioned Giorgi. Giorgi continued where Ligier had left o. With Henri Greder co-driving, he and 1003 took an incredible class win in the Targa Florio, nishing an almost-as-astounding fth overall.

O’Sullivan took victory at Brands Hatch in April 1965, setting the outright single seater lap record in the process. • Raced across Europe by next owner Geoff Oliver, with entries in the Goodwood Sunday Mirror Trophy and Gran Premio de Barcelona Formula 2 races before a diverse range of Formula 3 outings including attempted qualification at Monaco. • Subsequently sold to the USA through Robs Lamplough and Fred Opert, where it was raced in the late ‘60s by Fred Harris. Later owned by Brabham collector Joe Maria in New York State before entering the current ownership in 2000. • Restored by Simon Hadfield Motorsport in 2002 and maintained, cared for and improved by Retro Track & Air since 2009, with Cosworth SCA engine rebuilt by Geoff Richardson Engineering. • Remaining in beautiful condition and a potential entry for the superb Glover Trophy at the Goodwood Revival, along with benefitting from eligibility with the Historic Grand Prix Car Association, F2-14-64 is a charming way to experience some of the greatest circuits in Europe while competing with pre-1966 Formula 1 cars. It is difficult not to get swept up in the passion and history that surrounds Jack Brabham and Brabham cars. Jack Brabham is one of the great names in motor racing history. Three times world champion, a true racing hero; he epitomises probably the most iconic eras of Grand Prix racing, not only for his achievements behind the wheel, but also for his incredibly successful career as a race car manufacturer.

I must say I am surprised to be sitting here writing my first Presidents report for the 2013-2014 financial year. I would have thought you would have had enough of me by now. Thank you one and all for placing your faith in me for another year. Welcome back to my hard working fellow committee members and welcome aboard to a couple of new faces in Simon Glossop and Jock McBroom. Let’s try and make this a big year for the club by getting involved in club events or even putting your hand up to organise a run or function. Speaking of functions Ron & Nola have kindly offered up their fantastic deck area for this years Christmas function which once again will be a fully catered affair with all the trimmings.
