    Growing dudi (bottle gourd) Lagenaria siceraria The plant Dudi or bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) is one of the oldest cultivated crops, having been used by humans for over 14,000 years and has been transported to every part of the tropics in this time. It is a vigorous trailing or climbing vine with white flowers which open at night and hard-skinned fruits, which are edible when young. When they are mature the fruits or calabashes are hardwearing, decorative and waterproof. They can be made into light, hardwearing cooking or water-carrying utensils, musical instruments, bird-houses or other items. Similar to pumpkins in cultivation, they require a sunny, sheltered site, and only a moderately fertile soil. They need plenty of water in the growing season but hate wet feet so avoid very damp soil. A thriving dudi plant can climb to over 12ft, so they need plenty of room and a solid support!     ORIGIN, AREA, PRODUCTION, VARIETIES, PACKAGE OF PRACTICES FOR BITTER GOURD (Syn: Bitter cucumber, Balsam pear) (Momordica charantia L.) (2n = 22) (Hindi: Karela) Bitter gourd is an important vegetable in South Indian states, particularly in Kerala and is grown for its immature tuberculate fruits which have a unique bitter taste. Fruits are considered as a rich source of vitamins and minerals and 88 mg vitamin C per 100 g. Fruits are used after cooking and delicious preparations are made after stuffing and frying. During periods of glut in market, fruits are sliced, partially boiled with salt and dried under direct sunlight and stored for months. This is used after frying. Bitter gourd fruits have medicinal value and are used for curing diabetes, asthma, blood diseases and rheumatism. Drinking fresh bitter gourd juice is recommended by naturopaths. Roots and stem of wild bitter gourd are used in many ayurvedic medicines. Origin and distribution Bitter gourd is of old world origin and is a native of tropical Asia, particularly in the Indo Burma region. It is widely grown in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, China and tropical Africa. Botany Genus Momordica, to which bitter gourd belongs, has the following four species in India.     RIDGE GOURD (Luffa acutangula L.) Ridge gourd is a cucurbitaceous summer vegetable grown throughout the year in north eastern region and is used as vegetables. It is a creeper and has a climbing or trailing habit. There is a wide variation in shape and length of fruits. Cultivars PKM-l, Pusa Nasdar and Satputia are the recommended varieties for this region. Climate and Soil Warm and humid climate is favourable for its growth and development. The optimum temperature requirement is 25-30 QC. Ridge gourd can be grown in all kinds of soil but loam, clay loam and silt soil are best suited for its cultivation. Proper drainage is highly beneficial. Field Preparation Same as in cucumber Seed Rate: 3.5 to 5 kg/ha Time of Sowing Ridge gourd is cultivated both as summer and rainy season crop. Summer crop: January to April. Rainy season crop: June to July In hills of Meghalaya the seeds are sown in April. Spacing 1.5 to 2.5m (row to row) x 60 to 120cm (plant to plant) Manure and Fertilizer Well rotten FYM @ 10-15 t/ha should be applied at the time of land preparation. NPK @ 25:30:30 kg/ha should be applied before sowing. Apply 15-25 kg N /ha thirty days after sowing. Intercultural Operation Weeding: Shallow cultivation should be given during early stages of growth to control the weed. Herbicides such as Paraquat @800g/acre may be used to control the weeds. During weeding and hoeing, earthing up of the vine should be done. Staking: The vine should be trained on a bower with the help of thin bamboo pole used as a stake.

ARTHUR WHISTLER 2 ABSTRACT: A review of botanical specimens and ethnographic literature indicates that a small calabash used as a vessel for scented coconut oil in Polynesia before European contact belongs to Benin casa hispida (Thunb.) Cogn., the wax gourd, rather than to Lagenaria siceraria (Molina) StandI., the bottle gourd. Current literature does not mention any use ofthe edible wax gourd fruit as a calabash. It was also determined that there is no verifiable record of the bottle gourd having been present in western Polynesia before 1965, suggesting that the known occurrence of this species in eastern Polynesia before European contact may be attributed to dispersal from South America rather than from the west as is commonly believed.
