    THE EARLIEST HISTORY OF GERMANTOWN An Unknown Pastorius Manuscript By GERHARD FRiEDRicH Guilford College Library, Guilford College, North Carolina ( F ALL the numerous manuscripts that have come down to us 0 from the founder of the first German settlement on American soil, the most important, from the historical point of view, is the old land record of Germantown, entitled "Grund- und Lager-Buch aller und jeden unbeweglichen Gueter, geklaert- und ungeklaerten Landes, in der gantzen German Township." Inasmuch as this record is addressed to the first German inhabitants of America and to their descendants, it is also the most national book indited by Francis Daniel Pastorius. Its Latin dedication has been trans- lated into English by the Quaker poet, John Greenleaf Whittier, and the "Address to Posterity" ("Ansprach an die Nachkoemm- lingsschaft, und Alle, die dieses Lager-Buch continuiren oder fortsetzen") was the chief source for Whittier's "Pennsylvania Pilgrim." A three-page manuscript in the Abraham H. Cassel collection at Juniata College, Huntingdon, Pa., bears a very close relation to Germantown's "Grund- und Lager-Buch." The well-preserved document referred to was written by Pastorius in the year 1691, and careful investigation has revealed that, for the most part, it is an almost literal translation into English of excerpts from the "Ansprach an die Nachkoemmlingsschaft," recording the begin- nings of the Dutch-German immigration to America-from the year 1681, when William Penn was granted the province of Penn- sylvania, to the laying-out of Germantown in 1684. For the last third of the historical outline, which covers the period from the foundation of Germantown to its actual incorporation in 1691, no direct basis has been discovered in the Old Land Record.

    ==================== The First German Settlement -- IN — NORTH AMERICA. ==================== THE FIRST GERMAN SETTLEMENT IN NORTH AMERICA. ---------- HE 6th of "October is generally accepted by the German Americans as the anniversary of the founding of their first colony in this country. It was on this day in the year 1683 that the good ship "Concord" arrived at Philadel- phia with a number of families, who had left Germany to escape religious persecution, and with the intention to found a permanent settlement in the new colony of Pennsylvania, where they could worship God in their own manner, unmolested. They were, however, not the first Germans who came to America. Already in the year 1608, but one year after the first settlement of the English at Jamestown, some German mechanics came to Jamestown, on special invitation, to carry on their trade. In 1623 at Albany and 1625 at New York, then New Amsterdam, there were many Germans among the first Dutch settlers. Peter Minnewit, the Dutch Governor of New York from 1626 to 1631, who purchased Manhattan Island, 22,000 acres, from the Indians for 60 Dutch florins ($20), was a native of, and had been a deacon of the Reformed Church at the city of Wesel on the Rhine. From 1626 to 1633 the Swedes, by printed circulars distributed in Germany, invited the Germans to join them in their colonisation efforts in North America, and their first expedition with two ships in 1638 was commanded by said Peter Minnewit of Wesel, who had left the Dutch and entered the Swedish service. Their settlements were on the Delaware, and we find many German names among the first settlers.

THE UPPER NORTHWEST PLANNING DISTRICT The Upper Northwest Planning District encompasses the neighborhoods of Germantown, East Germantown, Blue Bell Hill, West Mount Airy, East Mount Airy, and Chestnut Hill. 2 BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE UPPER NORTHWEST PLANNING DISTRICT The area comprising the Upper Northwest Planning District was home to the Native Americans of the Lenni Lenape tribe long before the arrival of Europeans. The area is bounded at the southwest by the Wissahickon Creek, a corruption of the Lenape phrase meaning “catfish stream,” and at the northeast by the Wingohocking Creek, a corruption of “a favorite spot for planting.” German settlers, at first thirteen Quaker and Mennonite families from the Lower Rhineland town of Krefeld seeking religious freedom, began arriving in the area in 1683. The group was led by Francis Daniel Pastorius, who negotiated with William Penn for the 5700-acre tract.

    1 The Settlement of Germantown 1683-1719 and the beginning of Germantown Meeting Randal L Whitman 2020 Germantown got its name because the first settlers were Quakers from Germany—even though they were ethnically and linguistically Dutch, and all converted Mennonites. It all makes a good story, but I will start it with the Mennonites, a century before George Fox and his ideas. Gathering settlers Menno Simons (1492-1561) was a Dutch Catholic priest who, in the middle of the 16th century, first articulated the views that became the fundamental basis of Mennonism. The “worst” part of these, among many heresies--as far as Catholicism was concerned, and Lutheranism, too, in its turn--was the rejection of infant baptism in favor of adult baptism1. Menno attracted many Dutch followers who were severely persecuted, even in Holland, where “there were put to death for this cause at Rotterdam seven persons, Haarlem ten, the Hague thirteen, Curtrijk twenty, Brugge twenty-three, Amsterdam twenty-six…” 2. Holland would develop in the next century into the most liberal and tolerant nation in Europe, but rather too late for the Mennonites. Many Dutch Mennonites fled in the 16th century, mostly into other Teutonic areas of northern Europe, especially up the Rhine River, to a region called the Palatinate. One such group came to Crefeld, and settled there, a Mennonite community. Crefeld was a town on the Rhine, about half-way from Amsterdam to Frankfort, in the Duchy of Cleves, a state of the Holy Roman Empire, which was officially Catholic. After 1614, following political developments, Cleves, with Crefeld, became a part of the Margravate of Brandenburg, a part of Prussia, also a state of the Holy Roman Empire.

The man walked up to the stone house and before entering its sturdy doorframe he checked his coat pocket to ensure he had the “Paper”. The wide avenue was lined with peach trees whose leaves swayed gently in the early April breeze, and the man looked fondly at the homes the settlers of Germantown had toiled for five years previous. The people had swarmed like bees at the hive about the wilderness…chopping logs, planting gardens, and carving out a new life on the frontier of North America. He was of average height and build with thin face, contemplating bright blue eyes, the nose jutting and beak-like; his full locks of hair were pulled back in a ponytail. The year was 1688 and the piece of paper the man carried was the first petition against slavery in the North American colonies. Born in 1651, in Germany, he was Francis Daniel Pastorius, an immigrant lawyer who had arrived in Pennsylvania in 1683 to greet Europeans to the colony. On this fine spring morning he entered the stone house to discuss the antislavery message to a meeting of Quakers and Mennonites. Packed into the tiny parlor of the house were a group of settlers eager to hear any developments Pastorius might bring. The people represented an eclectic mix of nationalities and faiths symbolizing the melting pot that was seventeenth century Pennsylvania: English, German, Dutch, Swiss of Quaker and Mennonite persuasion.

    THE Pennsylvania Magazine OF HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY Philadelphia's "Miniature Williamsburg': The Colonial Revival and Germantown's Market Square ROM THE MOMENT THAT THE PROJECT became public, Colonial Williamsburg fired the imagination of historic preservationists and Finspired numerous so-called restorations all over the country. One of these projects, which supporters consistently described in correspondence and promotional materials as a "miniature Williamsburg," unfolded on the old Market Square in the Germantown section of Philadelphia.1 Begun just after World War II, this effort in Germantown represented the culmination of a local colonial revival movement that had started in earnest around 1900.
