Schedule Notes

Friday, September 27 Ashley Aniton joined ACYPL in February 2018 as a Program Officer. Prior to joining ACYPL she worked at George Washington University as a Program Assistant, assisting with the security studies master’s program. Ashley graduated from George Mason University in 2015 with a bachelor’s in government and international politics and in 2017 from The George Washington University with her master’s degree in international affairs. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, watching new shows on Netflix, and trying out new restaurants.

The U.S. Department of State is the federal executive department responsible for the international relations of the United States, equivalent to the foreign ministries of other countries. The Department was created in 1789 and was the first executive department established. The Department operates the diplomatic missions of the United States abroad and is responsible for implementing the foreign policy and diplomacy efforts of the United States. The Department is led by Secretary Mike Pompeo who was nominated by President Trump and confirmed by the US Senate in April 2018.

The Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs (EAP) engages with American partners and allies in that region to maintain peaceful and mutually beneficial relations. EAP promotes a free and open Indo-Pacific region, the strengthening of international resolve towards the denuclearization of North Korea, and building a constructive, results-oriented relationship with China. Stable and strong institutions in the Indo-Pacific that are inseparably linked to American security and prosperity.

Jean McAnerney is the EAP/Public Diplomacy Country Coordinator within the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs and the US Department of State.

Chris Johnson is currently working in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the US Department of State as the Cambodia Desk Officer. He served previously as Assistant Public Affairs Officer in U.S. Embassy Asuncion, Paraguay, and as a Consular Officer in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He has a master’s degree in public affairs from Princeton University, where he focused on economics and public policy. Chris speaks fluent Spanish and Portuguese and intermediate French.

Moses An is the Malaysia Desk Officer within the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the US Department of State.

Murni Adbul Hamid is the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Malaysian Embassy in Washington, DC.

Libby Rosenbaum serves as the Chief Executive Officer overseeing the ACYPL’s fundraising, communications, grants management, new business development, and strategic planning. Libby previously served as the Vice President of Programs and Communications. Prior to this, Libby served as the Education Partnerships Manager at the British Council where she promoted and established US-UK university research collaborations and planned international summits devoted to higher education best practice. She also served as the Major Gifts Officer at the Center for American Progress, a progressive think tank, and as a fundraiser on the US Senate campaigns of Ken Salazar and Joe Hoeffel. Libby graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Political Science and received an MSc in Politics and Government of the European Union from the London School of Economics. She travelled with ACYPL to Timor Leste in 2017.

Brian Harding serves as Deputy Director and Fellow of the Southeast Asia Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, DC. Before joining CSIS in 2018, he served as Director for East and Southeast Asia policy at the Center for American Progress, where he led a major expansion of the Center’s Asia policy initiatives. From 2009 to 2013, he served in the Office of the Secretary of Defense (Policy) at the Pentagon as Country Director for Asian and Pacific security affairs. Prior to working at the Department of Defense, Brian served as a CSIS Research Associate and helped build the CSIS Southeast Asia Program, the first of its kind in the Washington think-tank community. In positions with Eurasia Group and Monitor 360, Brian has advised multinational corporations, financial institutions, and the U.S. government on political risk and leadership dynamics in Southeast Asia. Brian earned a master’s degree in Asian studies from the Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University and a bachelor’s degree in history and Japanese studies from Middlebury College. He has studied at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan, and was a Fulbright scholar in Indonesia.

Chum Sounry became Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Cambodia to the United States and Ambassador designate of the Kingdom of Cambodia to Mexico in June 2018. Previously, he was Under Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Cambodia. Chum has also served as Ambassador to Australia, New Zealand, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and Russia. Chum has worked in several capacities within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including as Director of the Personnel Department (2006- 2008), Director of the Information Department (1999-2003), Deputy Director of the America Department (1998-1999), and Assistant to the Under Secretary of State (1993-1995). Chum was also First Secretary at the Embassy of Cambodia in DC (1995-1998) and Embassy of Cambodia in Bulgaria (1989-1993). He began his career within the Press Department in 1980. Chum has also received several national awards, including two Medals of National Merit, Royal Order of Cambodia, two Royal Orders of Monisaraphorn, and the Medal of Labor. Chum has a bachelor’s degree in public laws and speaks English and French.

Cameron Schupp is the Development & Special Projects Director at ACYPL. In this role, Cameron is responsible for managing fundraising initiatives, donor stewardship, and coordinating ACYPL events. Cameron has worked in various capacities in the nonprofit sector and prior to joining the ACYPL team, worked with the international development NGO International Executive Service Corp and as a Program Assistant at JASS, a women’s rights organization. Cameron graduated from George Mason University in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in global affairs and conflict analysis and resolution. She travelled with ACYPL to the Philippines and Indonesia in 2019.

Kaylee Boalt joined ACYPL in July 2016, serving the organization as a Program Officer, the Professional Fellows Program Manager, and now Program Director as of January 2019. In her role, Kaylee liaises with ACYPL’s international and domestic partners and oversees the program team in the implementation of global exchange programs. Prior to joining ACYPL, Kaylee was the Director of Student Programs at the National Council on US-Arab Relations where she administered leadership development programs and facilitated short-term exchanges for American professors and students studying the Arab World. Kaylee graduated from Converse College in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in politics and music. During her time at Converse, she performed in opera productions in the US and Italy and realized her passion for educational exchanges during a study visit to Saudi Arabia in 2012.

Sunday, September 29 Phnom Penh is the capital and most populous city in Cambodia. The city has an area of 262 square miles and a population of 2,129,371 as of 2019. The city previously served as the nation’s capital from 1434-1497, and it regained this status during the French colonization of Cambodia.

Monday, September 30 Kim Heng Tan has served as the President of the Khmer Youth Association (KYA) since March 2017. Before this, she served as President Assistant and Project Officer at KYA, ensuring the effective direction and implementation of KYA’s mission. She has taught English both at the American International School and the American Intercon Institute. She has also worked as a writer for Monoroom Magazine. She is an alumna of ACYPL as part of the Spring 2018 Professional Fellows Program.

Sakphea Houn is the Program Coordinator of Norwegian People’s Aid in Cambodia. She is an ACYPL alumna, having participated in the Professional Fellows Program in Spring 2019.

Linnette Franco is the Cultural Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh. She is responsible for managing over 40 scholarship and exchange programs through the Embassy.

Lt. Col. Matthew Mason is the Chief of the Office of Defense Cooperation for the US Army, stationed at the US Embassy – Phnom Penh.

The National Assembly is one of the two houses of the Parliament of Cambodia. It is referred to as the lower house, with the Senate being referred to as the upper house. The National Assembly is an elected body consisting of 125 members known as Members of Parliament. Members are elected for five-year terms by party-list proportional representation, using provinces as constituencies of 1 to 18 members. A political party must secure 63 seats to obtain and preserve a majority. The National Assembly is headed by the President, currently Heng Samrin. The sixth National Assembly was inaugurated on September 6, 2018 and is presided by King Norodom Sihamoni.

Pen Prakath is the Adviser to the President & Vice Director of the Research Center at the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

The Grassroots Democratic Party (GDP) is an independent political party based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It is headed by its Chairman Yang Saing Koma, with Yeng Vireak as Party President and Sam Inn as the Secretary-General. The party was one of the candidates in the 2018 Cambodian parliamentary election of the National Assembly. The core values of the GDP are: solidarity, justice, non-violence, freedom, integrity, and republicanism.

The National Museum of Cambodia in Phnom Penh is Cambodia's largest museum of cultural history and is the country's leading historical and archaeological museum. The museum houses one of the world's largest collections of Khmer art, including sculptures, Khmer ceramics, bronzes, and ethnographic objects. Its collection includes over 14,000 items, from prehistoric times to periods before, during and after the Khmer Empire, which at its height stretched from Thailand,

21 across present-day Cambodia, to southern Vietnam. The museum is under the authority of the Cambodian Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts. The museum buildings, inspired by Khmer temple architecture, were constructed between 1917 and 1924. The museum was officially inaugurated in 1920 and was renovated in 1968.

Tuesday, October 1 Kimhok Te is the Aid Coordinator for the Rehabilitation and Development Board at the Council for the Development of Cambodia. He has served in this position since December 2014. He was part of the International Studies Program at the Institute of Foreign Languages from 2011-2015 and earned a bachelor’s degree in law and social science at Panha Chiet University in 2014. He is an ACYPL alumnus as part of the Spring 2019 Professional Fellows Program.

The Cambodian Center for Human Rights (CCHR) is a non-partisan, independent, non- governmental organization that works to promote and protect democracy and respect for human rights throughout Cambodia. It focuses primarily on civil and political rights and on a variety of interlinked human rights issues. Since its foundation in 2002 as the first NGO to facilitate public forums throughout Cambodia, CCHR’s emphasis has been on empowering communities. These public forums were broadcast on Voice of Democracy (VOD), a radio program established by CCHR in 2003. In June 2007, the Cambodian Center for Independent Media was founded to operate VOD as an independent radio station. CCHR’s core focus areas include protecting fundamental freedoms; judicial and legislative reform; equality and discrimination; business and human rights; and political participation, rights and reform.

Sopheap Chak is the Executive Director of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights. She is one of Cambodia’s foremost human rights activists. Her work has received recognition from and praise by former U.S. President Barack Obama.

Leang Un is the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP). He earned his PhD in social and behavioral sciences from the University of Amsterdam and worked in the graduate program in education at RUPP and as a technical adviser to Action Aid, Cambodia and the World Bank’s project on higher education. In 2013, he was appointed Deputy Director of the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport (MoEYS), as well as Chief of Innovative and Development Grants at the Higher Education Quality and Capacity Improvement Project. From 2015-2016, he served as Deputy Director General within the Directorate General of Policy and Planning in MoEYS. His research and publications focus on comparative education policy and its contribution to national development.

Sik Bun Hok is the Chairman of Cambodia’s National Election Commission.

Puthea Hang is a Member and Spokesman for Cambodia’s National Election Committee. He is responsible for providing accurate information related to electoral issues to the Cambodian public. He was appointed as a result of an agreement between the Cambodian People’s Party and the Cambodian National Rescue Party.

The National Election Committee of Cambodia is the independent body that supervises all of Cambodia’s elections. It consists of nine members headed by a Chairman and Vice Chairman.

Wednesday, October 2 The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum chronicles the Cambodian genocide that occurred from 1975-1979. The complex was originally built as a high school before being converted into a security and interrogation center under the regime of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge. The prison was host to political opponents of Pol Pot’s regime, and later even former supporters whose loyalty was questioned. The facility was notorious for the brutality and atrocities committed within. The prison was uncovered during the Vietnamese invasion in 1979, after which it was converted into a museum remembering the victims both in and outside of the prison.

The Cambodian Center for Study and Development in Agriculture (CEDAC) is an agricultural and rural development organization set up in August 1997 to work for the development of ecologically based family agriculture, and to promote a cooperative and mutual assistance movement in the rural areas of Cambodia. Initial support came from the French non- governmental organization (NGO), GRET (Groupe de Recherches et d'Echanges Technologiques). Today, CEDAC stands as the preeminent Cambodian organization in the fields of agricultural and rural development, and is especially recognized for its farmer-led extension services, agricultural innovation trainings, support for farmer organizations and publications.

Chantheang Tong is the Executive Director of the Cambodian Center for Study and Development in Agriculture.

Sohan Mang is a Judge for the Court of the First Instance, within the Steng Treng Provincial Court. Sohan will be participating in ACYPL’s Fall 2019 Professional Fellows Program.

Politikoffee is a weekly forum that discusses politics and youth-related issues in Phnom Penh, Cambodia founded in 2011. The forum has hosted a number of expert speakers through the years, including monks, women's rights activists, teachers, diplomats and social analysts. The forum also features prominent political figures to stimulate debate regarding issues of national interest. In the recent years, Politikoffee has covered issues ranging from human rights, politics and non-violence, electoral reforms and Cambodia-China relations, among others. The forum is currently being held at the Cambodia office of Konrad Adenauer Foundation. In response to growing political tensions in Cambodia in November 2017, Politikoffee announced suspension of its meetings, however, it chose to restore the meetup in January 2018 as the political climate cooled down.

Ou Ritthy is a Co-Founder of Politikoffee. He is also a National Project Officer for Youth Empowerment & Employee Readiness at the International Labour Organization. His passions revolve around economic development, politics, democracy, environment, human rights, and international affairs.

Siem Reap is the capital city of Siem Reap Province in northwestern Cambodia. It has a population of 139,458, making it Cambodia’s 5th largest city. Due to its proximity to the Angkor temples, it is considered a major tourist hub, with the majority of its businesses consisting of tourism-related industries such as hotels, resorts, and restaurants.

Thursday, October 3 Angkor Wat is a temple complex in the Angkor region of Cambodia, located in Siem Reap. It is the largest religious monument in the world on a site measuring 402 acres. The temple was originally constructed as a Hindu worship site dedicated to the god Vishnu in the 12th century during the existence of the Khmer Empire. Towards the end of the 12th century, it was converted into a Buddhist temple. The temple is meant to represent Mount Meru, the spiritual center of Hindu cosmology. The complex is famous for its grand architecture, extensive bas-reliefs, and for its numerous depictions of Hindu deities or “devatas.”

Bayon Temple is a richly decorated Khmer temple at Angkor in Cambodia. Built in the late 12th or early 13th century as the state temple of the Mahayana Buddhist King Jayavarman VII. Bayon Temple's most distinctive feature is the multitude of serene and smiling stone faces on the many towers which jut out from the upper terrace and cluster around its central peak.

Ta Prohm Temple is the modern name of the temple at Angkor, Siem Reap Province, Cambodia, built in the Bayon style largely in the late 12th and early 13th centuries and originally called Rajavihara. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Ta Prohm is in much the same condition in which it was found: the photogenic and atmospheric combination of trees growing out of the ruins and the jungle surroundings have made it one of Angkor's most popular temples with visitors. UNESCO inscribed Ta Prohm on the World Heritage List in 1992. Today, it is one of the most visited complexes in Cambodia’s Angkor region. The temple of Ta Prohm was used as a location in the film Tomb Raider.

Norea Angkor Handicraft is a social enterprise company in Siem Reap. Norea provides jobs to local orphans to produce authentic lighting made from silk, which are often used to decorate nearby hotels, restaurants, pubs, massage & spa centers, clothes shops, and night markets.

Melaka (sometimes spelled as Malacca), dubbed "The Historic State,” is a state in Malaysia located in the southern region of the Malay Peninsula, next to the Strait of Malacca. Its capital is Melaka City, which is 92 miles southeast of Malaysia's capital city Kuala Lumpur. This historical city center has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2008. Melaka is famous for its unique history and is one of the major tourist destinations in Malaysia. With a highly strategic state position for international trade routes, Melaka was once a well-known international trade center in the East. Many traders anchored in Malacca and from there, were born many of the descendants and tribes that exist in Malacca to this day. The harmonious life and ambience of the people of Malacca is attributed to the life of various races and ethnicities that have long

Saturday, October 5 The Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum showcases the heritage of the ethnic Chinese-Malay population. Members of this ethnic group are termed “Baba Nyonya” in the Malay language. The museum was established in 1986 by Chan Kim Lay, and is located in the neighborhood known as “Millionaire’s Row” for its numerous luxury houses.

Razak Baharom is the Head of Digital Platforms at Melaka in Fact, a publication dedicated to preserving the history and culture of the city of Melaka. His love of history is what led to him joining the publication.

Sunday, October 6 Eddin Khoo is the Founder and Assistant Director of PUSAKA. He has a long history of writing on Malaysia’s various cultural traditions. He has worked as a journalist for The Star, Malaysia’s largest English-language newspaper, where he has authored numerous stories on Malaysia’s art and traditions. He also has worked closely with some of Malaysia’s most prominent artists. He has published two books: Intermediations, Selected Writings on Art and The Spirit of Wood. He has also worked to translate several poems into Malay.

PUSAKA is a cultural organization dedicated to creating a comprehensive documentary archive of Malaysia’s traditional performing arts. Additionally, the organization seeks to reinforce the importance of these practices at a community level. The organization’s current activities include five programs: Cultural Revitalization and Performance Viability, Local Instruction and Youth Engagement, Documentation and Cultural Mapping, Public Education, and Creative Engagement and Exploration.

The Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia is the largest museum of Islamic arts in Southeast Asia. It contains 12 main galleries and more than 7,000 artifacts from the Islamic world. Its exhibits are diverse and focus on every subject from the Quran to different regions of the Islamic world. In 2014, it was awarded the Platinum Award for Tourist Attraction from the Kuala Lumpur Mayor’s Tourism Awards.

Bukit Bintang is the main shopping and entertainment district of Kuala Lumpur. The neighborhood is home to many shopping centers, cafes, bars, markets, spas, and street vendors. It is also considered one of the most popular areas for young people in the city. The district is also very diverse, with a multitude of ethnic groups represented in restaurants and shopping venues.

Jane Rai has worked as a tour guide in Selangor for the better part of three decades. She works to carefully research the history of each place she visits, including emphasizing the perspectives of different ethnic groups. She is a native of Kuala Lumpur, her focus is on the history of Klang, the former royal capital of Malaysia.

Monday, October 7 The US Embassy – Kuala Lumpur is the main diplomatic mission of the United States government in Malaysia. It oversees a variety of tasks including visa services, assistance for American citizens in Malaysia, and various diplomatic and cultural outreach activities.

Liew Chin Tong is Malaysia’s Deputy Minister of Defense. Prior to this, he was a Member of Malaysia’s Parliament, first elected in 2008 for the Bukit Bendara constituency as a member of the . In 2013, he was elected to represent the Kluang constituency. Following the Alliance of Hope coalition’s victory in the 2018 elections, he was first made Senator, then appointed to his current position. He graduated from Australian National University in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in Asian Studies (Honours) and political science. In 2006, he earned an international master’s degree in regional integration at the University of Malaya.

The Malaysian Houses of Parliament is the building where the Parliament of Malaysia meets. The building was constructed from 1959-1963. The main building contains the chambers for the House of Representatives and Senate. The tower portion of the complex contains members’ offices. Though most of Malaysia’s administrative departments have moved to the city of Putrajaya, the Parliament continues to meet in Kuala Lumpur.

Bee Yin Yeo is a Malaysian politician from the Democratic Action Party, a component party in the ruling coalition. She currently is the Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change. She is also the incumbent Member of Parliament for Bakri in Johor. Previously, she was the former Member of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly for the Damansara Utama state seat for one term from 2013 to 2018. Among her early actions as Minister was to announce an increase of renewable energy goals from 2% to 20% by 2030. She has also initiated a refurbishment of government buildings to lead on efficient energy consumption. She has helped to set up a nationwide ban on the import of plastic waste and published a 12-year roadmap that includes a legal framework in eliminating the use of single use plastics in Malaysia by 2030. Bee is an ACYPL alumna from the Spring 2015 Professional Fellows Program.

Wong Chen is a member of the Malaysian Parliament for Subang. He began his career practicing law in the northern city of Kota Bharu. He also worked to provide legal aid for the rural poor. After this, he moved to Kuala Lumpur to work in corporate law and information technology until the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, where he became inspired by the goals of the Reformasi movement. After working for the People’s Justice Party as an advisor, he was elected to Parliament in 2013, where he continues to serve. Currently, he is the Investment and Trade Chairman of the People’s Justice Party, where he supports the party with economic research and policy ideas.

Tuesday, October 8 The Ministry of Higher Education, abbreviated MOHE, is ministry of the Government of Malaysia that is responsible for higher education, polytechnic, community college, student loans, accreditation, and student volunteers. Its main office is in Putrajaya. The current Federal Minister of Higher Education is Dr. Maszlee Malik. The Department of Higher Education is responsible for the management of both public and private institutes of higher learning and also Malaysian Student Departments around the world.

The Malaysian Centre for Constitutionalism and Human Rights (MCCHR) aims to bring about broader pro-human rights changes in society and within the law through strategic litigation on selected areas of human rights; freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, right to fair trial, equality and non-discrimination, freedom of religion and protection of human rights defender. It also provides strategic litigation training workshops to law students, pupils-in-chamber and lawyers on a regular basis.

Firdaus Husni is the Chief Human Rights Strategist at the Malaysian Centre for Constitutionalism and Human Rights. She is also an active lawyer and serves as the Co-Chairperson of the Human

Rights Committee for the Malaysian Bar Council. She previously served as the Co-Chairperson of the Malaysian Bar Council Constitutional Law Committee. Firdaus has a bachelor of laws degree from the University of Malaya and a master’s degree in law and merit from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London.

Raja Teagarajan is the Honorary Secretary General of the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Indian Chambers of Commerce. There, he is responsible for organizing and conducting the management council meetings and initiating engagement with embassies, government organizations, and financial institutions to create dialogue sessions and policy changes. Previously, Raja worked as a load optimization coordinator at Coca-Cola where he handled distribution of Coke products to retail and wholesale within the Malaysian state of Victoria. In 2002, he graduated from the Monash University in Australia with a bachelor’s degree in computing specializing in distributed systems, and in 2007, he received a master’s in business in administration from Monash Business School. He is an ACYPL alumnus, having participated in the Indonesia, Malaysia, and Philippines to United States exchange in 2014.

Wednesday, October 9 Rajiv Rishyakaran is a second-term Member of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly, where he has represented the seat of Bukit Gasing since 2013. He is a member of the Democratic Action Party. Rajiv serves on the Select Committee on Local Government and the Select Committee on Water Resources Management. His key focuses are on town planning, affordable housing, and improving public transportation.

BFM 89.9 is an independent business and current-affairs radio station operating out of Kuala Lumpur. It first began airing in September 2008 and much of its focus is on economic news, with programs focusing on stock market reports and interviews with corporate personalities and start- ups. Its live programming airs from 6:00 AM-9:00 PM on weekdays.

Mr. Nathan Blake Deputy Attorney General Iowa Department of Justice Democrat

Nathan is the Deputy Attorney General for the Iowa Department of Justice, serving under Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller. He advises the Attorney General on national and Iowa public policy and legal policy issues, coordinates multistate attorney general enforcement efforts for the office, and oversees the Consumer Protection Division.

Before being appointed to his current position, Nathan spent six years prosecuting Iowa Consumer Fraud Act cases. He also worked on anti-hunger policy at the United States Department of Agriculture. Nathan began his legal career at the Belin firm in Des Moines before joining the Obama campaign in 2007. In 2016, he won the National Association of Attorneys General Career Staff of the Year Award. Nathan currently sits on the City of Des Moines Zoning Board of Adjustment.

Nathan earned a bachelor’s degree in international studies from Union College, a master’s degree in ethics from Yale Divinity School, and a law degree from Yale Law School.

Erika has been a Member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives since 2017, representing Hillsborough County District 15. The Honorable Chris Jensen Mayor-Elect City of Noblesville Republican

Chris is currently the Mayor-Elect for the City of Noblesville, in which he will resume full responsibilities in November 2019. Previously, Chris was the President of the Noblesville Common Council. In this role, he passes city ordinances and approves city budgets. Chris also works in business development for the Lochmueller Group, a civil engineering firm working with cities and counties across Indiana on infrastructure development.
